I've got an Opti 931 sound board with joystck, etc. I haven't bben able to
get it to work. I found the attached instructions, but (as a newbie), I
really don't understand them. Can anyone translate these into newbie terms,
so I can try it out and learn along the way.

Thanks,
    Len

Set up /sbin/request-route to invoke your ppp-on script (or equivalent),
and
Linux will dial out every time it encounters a route request for an IP
that
isn't in it's routing table. The setup is documented in Dial-On-Demand
mini-howto.

As for an automatic timeout, there's a parameter for pppd
(idle-disconnect) that
specifies the number of seconds pppd will remain connected with no IP
traffic.
Once that time limit passes without IP traffic over the wire, pppd will
shut
down the dial-up connection and invoke your /etc/ppp/ip-down script.

BTW: I've got my /etc/ppp/ip-up and /etc/ppp/ip-down scripts installing
and
de-installing my ipfwadm rules for the PPP link. This way, my dial-up
firewall
rules can automatically adjust to the dynamically assigned IP address I
get
from my ISP at PPP connect.

I have the same problem now, could I as you how you fixed the problem
after you chose to login as root? I had a power failure and didn't
shutdown correctly too. :(

I see that Andrew has the same response in another one of his answers. I found this

I found that last sentence strange: if you're doing a
"ls -l /tmp/.crond_running" you don't need the -a flag.
If you're doing a "ls -al /tmp | fgrep .crond_running"
you would, but that'd also be an odd way to go about
checking the file.

I believe this is your problem: /dev/cdrom on your system is probably meant
for an ATAPI drive, and it sounds like you've got an old Mitsumi-interface
drive (LU-002, LU-005, or FX-001). You might want to try /dev/mcd or
something similar. The Hardware- or CDROM-Howto might help.

Yep, this pretty much means the CD is non-ATAPI and now is found.

and yep, the scsi thing is a red herring (assuming it just means that it
failed to initialise a card that you don't even have, which isn't surprising).

Oops, looks like you're ahead of me on the CD model stuff. Anyway, if you
make /dev/cdrom a symlink to /dev/mcd you'll probably be close to all set.
