Subject: Setting up printer
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 20:27:55 +0200
Hello,
I am trying to get my printer working for the very first time. I
compiled printer driver as module and put following line into
/etc/conf.modules:
options lp io=0x3bc,0x3bd,0x3be irq=5.
Trying modprobe lp I get error mesage:
/lib/modules/2.2.5/misc/lp.o: invalid parameter io
After I load this module using "insmod lp" and typing
"tunelp /dev/lp0" afterwards it always says "/dev/lp0 using IRQ -1". But
when I try "tunelp /dev/lp0 -i 5" I get message
"tunelp: ioctl: Invalid argument.
/dev/lp0 using IRQ -1"
So, what am I doing wrong??
TIA,
Marko

Hi, Roland!
Thanx a lot for your advice... I did try to follow your hints, unfortunatly
to no avail. fdisk /dev/hdc/ prints me the current partition table of disc
D: which is /dev/hdc1 (boot)* start 1 end 667 ID 83 (Linux native) and
/dev/hdc2 start 668 end 1022 ID b (Win 95 FAT 32) - so there would be no
need to change the ID, am I correct? Or do I have to use IC c - Win 95 FAT
32
LBA, whatever the hell LBA is ;-) When I nevertheless try to change to ID c
I get the error message "Re-read table failure with error 16 - device or
resource busy".
Unter Win 95 (>my PC - >system) D: is listed as "harddisc with filesystem
for MS-DOS-compatibility" - if I try to get into >details it says driver
conflict in config.sys. And when I check that file I can only find drive C:,
but I guess D: should be listed there, too?
Sorry about bothering you - I know this is mainly a Windoofs problem (yet
again!), but I guess there are quite a lot people out there working with
both OS's.

My Linux boot disk is the 3rd drive and thus dparam.com can't probe it.
I used "linear" and it worked:

Subject: Migration from SCO 3.2v4 to Linux
Date: 14 Jun 1999 07:00:27 GMT
I am changing my old OpenServer 3 for Linux.
On the SCO box I also used the SCO Development System 3.2.4d.
I succeeded in migrating my applications to the Linux box (thanks to the
iBCS2 package provided with the Linux Red Hat distribution).
But one problem remains I want to solve : I developed an Informix 4GL
application on my SCO system that I want to keep going enhancing on my new
Linux machine. For that, I need to use the old Informix development
environment (I4GL v4.10) I had purchased with my SCO system. The
application compiled on SCO runs well under Linux, but recompiling it on
the Linux box does not work.
In fact, my Informix application need to be linked with old Informix
libraries wich are in COFF format.
I guess I have two solutions :
- Either to find out how to migrate all the SCO dev. environment on my
Linux box and use it as is for my future developments. In this case my
Linux box would simply behave as a host for these developments. The problem
is how to migrate the SCO dev. without interferring with the gcc Linux
distribution on the Linux machine.
- Or to use gcc on the Linux box for compiling and linking. But, in this
case, my COFF libraries have to be translated in ELF.
Can anybody give me some advices?
Thank you.

I had to do this a while ago when my HD ran out of space and the lilo.conf got
screwed up. The easiest way to do it from under DOS is:
fdisk /mbr
Strictly speaking, this copies dos onto the master boot record, over-writing
LILO. Hope i'm of help.

Subject: Reattaching orphaned interactive processes

I am running RedHat 6.0 and have a question about recovering
orphaned processes. I have a stray (Angband) process for which the parent
terminal session was killed. The process has continued running
(backgrounded) for a week or so, and I would like to reactivate it
(cf. `fg') and save the results.
The process is interactive, and what I need to be able to do
is send "halt" and "save" commands (just a few keystrokes: [ESC],
^X, y, [CR]) to it. I am able to use
gdb <path-to-binary> <pid>
to attach the process to gdb, and can even `continue', but
I don't know how to attach it to the currently running terminal
session.
Any instructions you could provide on how to save an orphaned
process would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

This problem can be solved bu giving people a special shell that
chroot()s them to a special area with the normal stuff mostly
read-only or absent and wahtever distilation of the password file you
want. Users along the lines of flezz (purely hypothetical) can be
left out of the list...giving crackers a list of the admin users is not
a good move.
You could edit sendmail.cf so that usernames, other than a few, are
not usable as such---instead people must use aliases which resolve to
those user names, so a list of users is useless as a mailing list (you
probably want the bat book if you decide to do this).
If you do this be sure to plug things like .forward and .procmailrc
files. Procmail needs patching to do this the way I did things.

Sounds logical to me - the disk is pretty big. Strange thing is that I
have been re-building 2.2.5 for a couple of days now and haven't had
this problem before. I always use bzImage and always run /sbin/lilo
but it hasn't ever complained.

Mmm - not an option at the moment.

Ahh - I see, so it isn't the fact that the disk is >1024 cylinders but

This make more sense and might explain why it didn't fail before

This is anti-relaying rulesets in sendmail. Do not disable these,
instead edit the list of allowed IPs, which someone suggested was
/etc/mail/ip_allow. IPs listed in this file can relay mail anywere
without this problem. The spammers, using other IPs, can not.

You can not get packet to private IP space over any major internet
interchanges (often a good reason for using much IP numbers). You
could get the firewall do to port forwarding to the email server for
the relevent ports though.
