After you boot (anyway you can) do "dmesg | less"; you will see what
the kernel's says about your detected drives and their geometries.
This same information should be located in "/var/adm/messages".

Also, there is a program called hdparam, I think.

You might find something of use in:

Hello,

Ok, here goes. I have recently <about a month> installed RedHat 5.2 on
a 486 machine. I've taken all the step to set up PPPD and my modem, But
now when i try to activate the modem from network configuration in X the
modem seems to work properly. Heres the odd part, When the modem
initializes it seems to disable the phone line, meaning it dials
properly at the modem but is not sending any info across the phone line.
I've been pulling my hair out for days now so if anyone has some ideas
before i go bald i would be grateful

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I wonder if there's a link between nfs inodes and ext2 inodes.
Actually, I got nfs errors telling me that that inode 556367879 is busy
and that it points to communicator4.5.
But on my hard drive, the communicator4.5 's inode is 1701924.

I don't understand nothing !! Help me please !
Thanks.

Couple things: Mandrake won me over! I had installed RH5.2 previously and
constantly ended up rebuilding the kernel because one thing or another
didn't work (my fault, I think, I was new at it) but Mandrake 6.0 was a
dream. I ran the install and everything, that's EVERYTHING, in my computer
is working fine now. Go with Mandrake because it's basically
Redhat+improvements and add-ons. More for less if you know what I mean!

I just got through migrating from SCO ODT3.0 server to RH5.2 . RH6.0 would not
run the SCO binaries. I
had to port my C library and DataFlex 2.3b database language also. Use -w and
-traditional with the c compiler to get rid of most of the warnings.

$70 for linux? big no no. $30 for suse is the better deal. But you can
also download it and StarOffice 5.1 for free, if you have enough free time
(2 or 3 nights).

Run zlilo or and it compiles and sets everything up ,at least for me it
does since 5.3.
I typically run from root in /usr/src/linux

one of these need to be done first to set up the config file
   make config (xconfig) (menuconfig)

   make dep clean zImage
   make modules modules_install
   make zlilo

I know the zImage is redundant but I use it for a check.

This has worked for me if the kernel is to big use
make bzlilo
I think thats right

Good Luck

If it is a PCI modem it is almost certainly a winmodem If it is not the
manufacturer will proudly state the fact on the box that the modem works
under any operating system.

If it is USB, forget it. USB support for anything is primative to
non-existant in linux.
If it is ISA, there is a reasonable probability it is useable-- if it
has jumpers on board for you to select the IRQ and port, than the
probablity goes up.
If it is an external serial cable connected modem, the chances are very
high that it is useable.

Try the site

and refereces therein for advice on modems.

Set your path.

I'd also recommend going to http://www.calderathin.com/ and click on the
"DRDOS for DOSEMU" button. CalderaThin has a nice disk image all ready
to go for DOSEMU and have generously made it free for usage under DOSEMU
(even in a commercial setting).

It boots great, and automagically maps drive L: to be your Linux
directory structure.

(Of course, the first thing I installed under DRDOS was elvis... :))

That's not an answer. Some linux db's (including free ones) *do* have
transactions. If you need transactions, why not switch to one of
those instead of jumping through hoops to avoid it?

Hi Jacob!

I have the same CDR and the same kernel Version.
Have you got the SG Buffer patch? If not you can
get the patch at
ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/alpha/

The file I pulled down was SG-2.2.tar.gz
After compiling this you will have to recompile
your kernel again.

This allowed me to write audio CDs without any
errors. However, even though the process went
through a write and fixation, I still get no audio
coming from the disk even though the CD player
sees all the tracks and can index them ok.

So this might be another problem. I'm using
CDRECORD 1.6.1 and XCDROAST to pull tracks and
write them. Has anyone seen this problem before??

Any help is appreciated. Thanks
