Hi,
I have a Soundblaster 16 or some variation. I had spoken to
a technical person at Redhat when I first bought the distribution.
The problem was that my card was not recognized automatically
by the system and the technician gave me some lines to type
in in the conf.modules file and also the file called something
like isapnp.conf. The sound card worked perfectly after that.
The issue now is that I had to reinstall my system because
of a crash and can't find the info that he gave me on
installing the card.
My card works perfectly in Windows 95 installed as a
Soundblaster 16.
Help will be much appreciated. I usually save all my
config files on floppys and write down important info,
but I slipped up on that one.

                                                    Thanks

                                                        Mike

Hi,
    I inherited a Microtek E3 scanner with an Adaptec AVA-1502 E
scsi interface card. The big question is, is there any way to
install and use it in Linux and if so, what are the details.

                                                        Thanks

Netscape is INCREDIBLY unstable on caldera too. I have heard that something
called Amaya is really fast and can be got from the W3 consortium page. Check
out www.gnulinux.com's browser reviews.

i want to install redhat or mandrake on my laptop.

i hooked up my laptop to the ethernet network and want
to do a pcmcia
install. i use the mandrake 7.1 pcmcia boot floppy, (
same as the redhat floppy), the startup image
comes up, i choose "HTTP" as install media, i choose
"DHCP" as IP, enter
the download site and directory, and that's as far as
i get. the
                  program writes "Retrieving base/mdkinst_stage2.gz..."
(on redhat that is called inst_stg2.gz or so), and after 15
minutes (!) it finally decides that it does not work:
"Unable to
retrieve the second stage ramdisk: Failed to connect
to server".

the same problem occurs when choosing "FTP" instead of
"HTTP" and
choosing an ftp server instead of an http server. in
fact, the same
problem (and the same 15 minute wait!) occurs when i
type a wrong ftp
directory. the network seems to be working though:
when i mistype the
server name, i get an error message within seconds.

                  any ideas?

i install it without any pblm but after the box where the question is : " do
you want to reboot under linux" a pblm appears.
i'm in a same session as dos where the linux system check my devices and an
error comes out :

"VFS : Cannot open root device 08:01
kernel panic : VFS : unable to mount root fs on 08:01 "

what's the pblm ?

I'm a new user under linux and i prefer to test it without partition my hard

No you probably don't. Read the Sound HOWTO to be disabused. If you
really have a SB16, well and good, you're home and dry.

Read the Sound-HOWTO and the PNP-HOWTO. The lines in conf.modules
will be the standard alias and options for an sb, as determined
by the choices you made in isapnp.conf.

He made it up. Read the PNP-HOWTO.

That just tells us it has a windows driver that emulates an SB16.
All you need to do is run pnpdump and edit the result (if that!).
It's a 1,2,3.

Subject: PPPd dies and ram not all found.
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 15:21:47 GMT

Hi there ,
I am using mdk 7.1 with a US Robotics 56k modem. whenever I try to dial in with
kppp or gnome ppp "pppd dies unexpectedly" . Annoying. I didn't fill out the
dns field or hostname for the provider, I didn't have to do this in caldera.
Could this have caused it? If so is there a sort of "generic" ip for use in
kppp, because I didn't need a special ip for kppp in caldera.

Also MDK has only recognised 64mb of my 256mb ram. In the installation when it
asked me what my ram was (found 64mb) I had entered 256 . If I install again
how can I get all my ram to work??

Because of these two problems I've had to reinstall caldera , but if anyone
knows how to stop my pppdaemon from dying and how to find all my ram I'll
happily reinstall mandrake (caldera ==bad news).

Thanks all,
Kyle

My guess would be that a video card upgrade would help. I got very good
performance on a P-133 with an S3 968-based card ( Diamond Stealth VRAM
card, to be exact ). The ATI cards don't have a good rep for speed, from
what I've heard, and the newest cards that tout 3D performance have
sacrificed 2D performance somewhat to get it ( although with all the
general improvements you probably will still see an improvement from
them ). I'd look for this in a video card:

1. Good 2D chipset. The S3 chips are particularly well-supported on Linux,
but cards using them are kind of hard to find these days. If you can't
find an S3-based card, try the newer generations of video cards.
2. VRAM on the video card. The DRAM-based cards are a _lot_ slower when
it comes to drawing because of the extra wait states needed with the
   slower memory chips.
3. AGP or PCI interface. If you can't find a 2D card, a good modern 3D
one in an AGP slot should provide a considerable improvement over the
ATI. Go with PCI only for things like the S3 cards that don't come in
   AGP versions.
4. As much memory on the card as possible. The X server can use the extra
memory to store things like font bitmaps and image pixmaps, so that it
can do an on-card bitblit instead of having to transfer images across
the system bus when drawing things.

If you have space (a spare partition) on your HD, then use this for your
Linux-Mandrake. You do not have to move any of your Caldera partitions.
Otherwise, you're looking at a lot of work.

Please write if you have any more questions.

Hope this helps.

Have a nice day.

Subject: timestamp problems
Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 16:05:45 GMT

Running Linux Redhat 6.2 Kernel 2.2.16-3, P-III 700MHZ 256MB RAM:

When I create a file (pico for example) or when I run "touch filename"
the timestamp of the file is exactly 7 hours in advance (GMT). However
all other system clocks seem to be correct. When I run "date" the date
and time returned is correct. I have run timetool, linuxconf, checked
the CMOS's date/time and all those are correct.

This problem occurs if I FTP a file to the computer or any manipulation
of a file where a timestamp would be initiated. Because of this
timestamp problem, many programs won't work correctly. For example:

When Linux RedHat starts up it runs "/etc/rc.d/inet.d/syslogd". This
startup script uses "touch" to create a file at:

/var/lock/subsys/syslog

But because the timestamp of this touch is different than the time of
the machine, this startup says it failed. However syslogd is running and
all log message timestamps show the "correct" date/time. Other problems
are also caused by this. For example:

If I edit a file with my programmer's editor it always says that the
time of the file I am trying to save is newer on the computer than the
time I am now trying to save and asks if I want to overwrite. These are
just some of the annoying problems this has caused.

I have not done any updating of my system (kernel etc) for over a month.
Everything worked just fine and then one day it didn't.

Any ideas?

ping doesn't show connection speeds. all it displays is how long it
takes to send a packet of data a particular host, and receive a
response. no where in the output is a display of the speed in k/s or

Those two are directories (at least on my system). The .gnome* entries are also
likely directories too (I don't use gnome so I'm not sure). The listing doesn't
seem to have counted the contents of these directories, just the directories
themselves. Odd....

Not just NO-OPs! Anything that you can get the program and data to fit into
the L1 cache should go like blazes. ;-)

But in realistic applications, where it is not even in the L2, where are you
? Waiting for your main memory, of course, that the IO devices are
contending for as well.

Back when I was writing optimizers for a company that designed its own CPU
chips, I pleaded with them to use their chip area for more Instruction and
data cache, and not a bunch of seldom or never used op-codes. They seldom
listened. Sigh! While you may have heard of the company, I bet you did not
know they made CPU chips.
