That's right. Got the same error w/ patch 2.1 (issue patch -v), no
errors with patch 2.5 (available from
<gnu-site-mirror>/patch/patch-2.5.tar.gz, approx 130K, just tar xfz it,
then cd into the dir, issue './configure --prefix=/usr' then make then
'make install'. done. You maybe have to adjust the /usr. run locate
patch to find the location of the executable, then prefix=location w/o
bin)

There's a commercial sound driver available called Alsa or something like
that.
I believe it costs $10.US. And I believe SuSE Linux 6.1 included it in the
distribution.
It's said to supports many sound cards that're not supported in the kernel.
Or check out the suse.com
Do a search on Alsa.

Gored,
I had the same problem....when I went to load the sb I got the message
that same message. I played around with it then i think I clicked on
"info" or something like that. Then I played around with the IRQ values
until I found one that worked (5 worked for me). Once I changed only the
IRQ number it installed just fine. Good Luck and I hope that helped!

My point being
a) No one in either Linux or NT camp will dispute that Solaris scales better
than either OS (if they do, they're idiots)
b) Whenever scalability is mentioned, most Linux users start talking about
Solaris, which as I pointed out != linux

I am a Linux newbie and was recently shopping around for Redhat 6.0. I
couldn't find it for any less than $75 locally. Meanwhile I downloaded
the entire version (around 2 GBs.) My problem was I couldn't find any
Redhat 6.0 manuals except for what comes in the $75 kit. I decided to
buy SuSE Linux 6.1 and am happy with it so far. I didn't have any
problems with the installation at all. It was definitely different and
you NEED the book to get by unless you know UNIX or LINUX. There would
be no way I could have done it without some kind of book. The main
reason I wanted RedHat was because I heard it was easy to install. I
found that SuSE wasn't hard to install. I had it up and running (on my
local network) in one evening.
If you don't believe that I'm a true newbie, I just learned how to
launch a program (using ./) this evening.

I've purchased two applications for Linux on CD: WordPerfect and Code
Warrior. Both applications give install instructions to install directly
from the CD, but I cannot seem to do this: I get a "permission denied" error,
even as root.
I figured out it must be because the CD is read-only, and sure enough,
copying the CD contents into a directory on my HD and installing from there,
everything installed fine.
My question is: how can I install off a CD? Clearly it should be possible.
I'm thinking perhaps there's a mounting option I haven't provided. Can
anyone clue me in on what is going wrong? Thanks in advance for whatever
help folks can provide.

Yea. Doesn't that belong in the operating system, not the desktop?
Actually, it strikes me that KDE is a very windows-esque way of doing

I get the same thing. When cron runs logrotate, I get an email saying "bad year
1900 for file /var/lib/httpd/access_log in /var/lib/logrotate.status" (RH 4.1
w/ kernel upgraded to 2.2.9 - problem existed before kernel upgrade). Every
entry in the logrotate.status file has a date of 1900-1-0. If I delete the
logrotate.status file, logrotate runs fine and it rebuilds the .status file with
the same entries. It then crashes the next day. I'm trying to find out why
this happens. If I have any luck, I'll let you know.

No top bar? Check the file:
~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/database
or
/usr/share/afterstep/database
if you don't have a personal 'database' file.
The windows property "NoHandles" causes this. You may have
NoHandles set for the window class that has this behavior
(no top bar).
Check the file:
~/.Xdefaults
do you have xterm, nxterm, or aterm (whatever XTerm you are
using) foreground or background color set to the default
background or foreground color respectively? You can control
the foreground and background of your xterm from .Xdefaults
or from the command line which starts them.

If you're serving almost exclusively static web pages and you want to
increase your performance, try installing squid in front of Apache -- let
apache generate the pages the first time, but then allow squid to cache
them and serve them up as fast as it possibly can.
Assuming you've got enough RAM to support caching enough pages to make
squid worthwhile, this should significantly increase your throughput.

Hi,
I'm putting a whole bunch of animation files on the web, and I could do
with something which will shrink gifs a fair amount without removing any
detail. I believe the gifs I have use a 256 colour palette whilst only
actually needing a much smaller one, so savings are possible.
I used to use a program called gifslim (under Linux, this is) to shrink
the gifs before animating them with gifmerge. However, I now can't find
gifslim anywhere...
Does anyone know where I can get hold of gifslim? If not, are there any
other packages you know of (for free, and preferrably Linux-friendly) to
shrink gif filesizes down?

My guess is that your hostname is being reset and this is causing some trouble.
You can check it by typing "hostname" at the shell prompt and seeing if it
changes after you dial up. You can reset your hostname ( to the original )
by using the "hostname" command as root.
Meanwhile, check your kppp config to make sure it's not overwriting your
hostname.
One thing that you *could* do is configure it so that it doesn't die after
you exit your X-session. Then you can fire up the internet connection, log
out of X and log in again. A PITA, but not as much of one.

What program are you using for ppp ? ( minicom, kppp, ezppp, redhat dialup

Subject: Qmail can't forward to a POP box off of the server.
Date: 15 Jun 1999 21:30:48 GMT
Hello,
If anyone out there could answer this, I would be most appreciative.
I recently installed RedHat 5.2 on an old 486 in plans of it replacing our
current mail server, running on NT. I dumped sendmail and installed qmail.
Everything's cool, except I can not get the .qmail files to forward to
email address. The will forward to local mailboxes, but not to boxes that
are off of the server.
Say we have the virtual domain, client-domain.com. I listed this domain
name in /var/qmail/control/rcpthosts and /var/qmail/control/locals. I
added a /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains file, with this in it:
client-domain.com:client1138
The user client1138 already has a home directory and maildir all setup.
Here is how that looks:
root# pwd
/home
root# ls -al
total 3
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 1024 Jun 15 11:10 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 1024 Jun 11 23:57 ..
drwx------ 3 client1138 client1138 1024 Jun 15 11:44 client1138
root# cd client1138/
root# ls -al
total 5
drwx------ 3 client1138 client1138 1024 Jun 15 11:44 .
drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 1024 Jun 15 11:10 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 client1138 client1138 11 Jun 15 11:10 .qmail
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21 Jun 15 12:05 .qmail-test
drwx------ 5 client1138 client1138 1024 Jun 15 11:10 Maildir
The .qmail-test file contains the line:
&[EMAIL PROTECTED]
The actual email address is of course a valid one. Now, when I send a test
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], I don't get a MAILER-DAEMON error, or a
message in my maillog about it dying, nothing. But- when I change the cile
to say:
&anotherlocaluser
The mail delivers just fine. I do eventually get this message mailed to
root: (forwarded from root to another box, of course)
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Some info:
The main issue (re dual boot) is partitioning. The problem arises if you
all your disk space is assigned to partitions. ( if you haven't partitioned
away all of your disk space, you don't have a problem )
There are two options:
(a) repartition with dos fdisk. This will blow away your windows installation,
so you'll need to re install.
(b) nondestructively resize the windows partition. THere's a free tool
called FIPS that does this. THere's also partition magic. Caldera includes
a cut down version of partition magic that takes care of this issue also.
A website for more info:
Part of the installation HOWTO deals with this:
