Unless you will never upgrade or move client computers, don't set it to
unlimited, or you can't recover a lease to a DHCP client.

Hmmm. I like SuSE because it gives, by far, the best bang for the buck.
Nobody else comes close in terms of bundled software, and SuSE offers
similar tech support to $$$-Hat's distribution...

Dunno about the GUI as I have not yet had enough experience. KDE is nice,
but I also have an affection for WindowMaker.

No, but FWIW the page loads OK with the NS 4.51+java+javascript that
installed along with SuSE 6.1. MY problem is that the stupid
spellchecker freezes it! Oh yeah, other random things freeze it too.

Every time you install a new program, either compiled by you with
downloaded source code or precompiled binaries, check the permissions
of the files installed. If anything is suid (ie an s appears in a ls -l
, like -rws------), be very suspicious. In Linux, only root can do much
damage. A suid program runs with the permission of root, even when you're
not login as one.

If the file you downloaded is in rpm format, check the signature on
it with rpm --checksig file.rpm. Packages from big sites, like redhat,
are all pgp signed. Even if you don't have pgp or the packages
are not pgp signed, the checksig should still be useful for MD5s.

Maybe make your .xsession look at the $DISPLAY variable and pick on or
another? Set a shell variable (eg $WM) to something before starting
X and then check that?

| And if one can run two window managers at the same time,

Nah - they're just X clients like anything else.
Consider the multiuser machine - it would have multiple window managers
(and xterms and shells and netscape and ...) running at once, on
different displays.

The only real difficulty might be window managers which want to rewrite
their config files or something (and those with config menus may fall
into this category - Real Programmers edit their configs by hand:-)
Then two instances of the same wm might tread on each others' toes.
Maybe. But normally not.

Is kwrite the same as the application "Advanced Editor" in KDE?

I could not find any mention of kwrite
in the list of applications at http://www.kde.org .
As a RedHat user, I would have preferred an RPM,
but again I did not find any kwrite*.rpm at RedHat.

Having said that, your example illustrates perfectly my theme.
I would not regard the ability to drag-and-drop in kwrite
as anywhere like as important as the facilities offerred by emacs.

In any case, is it not possible to create a "wrapper"
to add this facility to an existing program (like emacs)?

Subject: Is is possible to store debug information from a seg fault?
Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 23:53:11 -0700

I have a system that doesn't get along with RH6 shutdowns. The system
appears to run perfectly well but when I shut it down and the last System
Halted message shows I immediately get a SegFault with a screen full of
information. How do I save this info to disk so I can post it to get some
help? I'd really rather not type it all in on another system.

If it isn't possible to redirect the info to a file (since everything is
shut down by the time the error occurs) what information is useful for
debugging? Can I redirect it to a com port and pick it up on another
system?

Roughly, this is the error:
Code: <1>Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0000873b

<lots of techical stuff left out>

/etc/rc.d/rc0.d/S00halt: line 1: 1027 Segmentation Fault halt -i -d -p

Any suggestions on how to get the rest of the info without a bunch of
typing? Better yet, any suggestions on what might be the problem?

The system is an AMD K6 3D with 32MB RAM and a Trident 3D Image 975 video
card and a RealTek RTL8029 network card. I have experienced this problem
with Mandrake 6.0 and E-Smith 3.0 - both based on RH6 and kernel version
2.2.5-22.

As anyone with only 20MB of ram can tell you, running netscape
4.xx on a loaded system is UgLY! swap space gets used and we all know
about the Netscape 4.xx Java crunch. Looking on linuxberg, my local
mirror is http://downcity.linuxberg.com There is two versions of
netscape 3.04 online. the standard and netscape-GOLD. neither comes in
Glibc2 versions however if you want a simple non-hogging netscape that
is simpler to use. grab em! This netscape works fine on my system ever
shrunk down to 320x200! Netscape 4.08 does Not work that well on
small scrreens. Also its user interface in my opinion reminds me of
netscape on my Windows 3.1 system (it should, its the same version!)
and set up is a snap. the Netscape bin file is the following size

text data bss dec hex filename
4163865 762912 57868 4984645 4c0f45 /usr/local/netscape2/netscape
Compare that with Netscape 4.08

9138573 1008604 279320 10426497 9f1881 /usr/local/netscape/netscape

It also appears that this earlier netscape does not have the java
glitch as far as I can see.
Plus Netscape 3.04 starts up Immediatly! No long waits. I
ditched Netscape 4.61 recently and switched to 4.08. Now I am
considering wiping out netscape 4.08 and just use netscape 3.04!
Oh yes, the Netscape 3.04 is Netscape gold, the othe ris

clear and i have been able to tune my UK Cable box into it with no trouble.
But it is a bit pointless without sound! My sound card is a AWE 64 (ISA)

help.

ps I have had some problems when the XAWTV application just doesn't work,
do you recommend having to install it all again. It is saying that
/dev/video is not there! I know it is and i've use insmod bttv.o card=0
radio=1 funtion, but nothing, please could you help with this matter? Is it
something to do with the .xawtv configuration file? or the bttv Makefile?

Well, first off...the fact that you can listen to a CD means nothing.
I was able to do that long before I figured out how to get my
soundcard working.

Second....I have had some real problems with the new isapnptools. The
one on the new slackware does not function it seems, keeps giving
errors and can never get it right. So when I install slack I skip
that part and install pnptools from the old version and all works well
for me. Perhaps your SB16 PnP is not getting initialized correctly by
the pnp programs.
