You have a default route on your ethernet-- do not do this. Your pppd
will not set up a default route on ppp if one already exists. Make sure
that your ethernet hosts all have explicit routes set up, and make sure
that there is no default route onto your ethernet.

June 20, 1999
Hello:
I have Windows 98 as my op. sys. on my PC.
But I need to install Linux as my temp. operating
system.
How does this work: do I lose all my files I have
saved in Windows 98 if I don't save everything to
disk? Is Linux installed on TOP of Windows 98?
Can I access Windows 98 from the Linux mode?
Can I access my internet browser (Netscape) if
I'm in Linux mode? Can I get online from Linux?
Any help at all to these questions would save
my life!!
Thanks,
Bubba

In order for one to legally use a service pack or a patch from Microsoft they
must have purchased a Windows license. So it costs me money to use those
patches, therefor one could say they are not free. Just like IE, you must
legally have Windows to use it. $$
So an opensource patch is free, a Microsoft patch is not. Its a stretch, I
know.

You probably want "nvi": http://www.bostic.com/vi/ .
>From Lamb & Robbins 1998, _Learning the vi editor_:
The original vi was developed at UCB in the late 1970s by
Bill Joy, then a computer science graduate student, and now
a founder and vice president of Sun Microsystems.
Bill Joy first built ex, starting with and heavily enhancing
the Sixth Edition ed editor. [...]
Despite all of the changes, vi's core was (and is) the
original UNIX ed editor. As such, it was code that could
not be freely distributed. By the early 1990s, when they
were working on 4.4BSD, the BSD developers wanted a version
of vi that could be freely distributed in source code form.
Keith Bostic of UCB started with elvis 1.8, which was a
freely distributable vi clone, and began turning it into a
"bug for bug compatible" clone of vi. [...]
nvi is important because it is the "official" Berkeley
version of vi. It is part of 4.4BSD-Lite II, and is the vi
version used on the various popular BSD variants such as
NetBSD and FreeBSD.

Man, that brought back some memories.
COCO 3 was my first computer. I can still remember how
excited I was when I got a disk drive for it (plugged into
the cartridge slot). I think I got the disk drive for
Christmas one year and it retailed for about $200.
I could be off a little, because I was only about 10 or 11
years old at the time.

Has anyone seen my lost 25MB? When I run df, I get the following
results:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used
Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/hda6 446868 421366
2421 99% /
/dev/hda4 118965 21885
90932 19% /extra
As you can see, /dev/hda4 (my post-install need more space for gimp
images partition) looks fine.
/dev/hda6 doesn't look so good! The amounts of space used and available
don't exactly add up. I have run fsck on all partitions - no problems
(I even did a bad sector check). I also tried to examine the partition
using Partition Magic - I found nothing unusual there. Perhaps I am
looking in the wrong place - very likely actually :)
Any help is very appreciated. Please send a courtesy copy of any
replies to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sincerely,
Ryan T. Rhea
P.S. I am running Caldera with the 2.0.35 version kernel.

Hi !!!
I want to uninstall Linux Red HAt 5.2 and Install Win95. But when I did
install Linux on my Compaq Prosignia server machine Linux had asked me
to overwrite Master Boot Record and I selected to change it. Now
whatever I do nothing happens. I have tried deleting partitions using
Linux fdisk too, note that my HDD is SCSI.
I have booted my system with Bootable CDROM of Win NT too, after copying
files NT asks for system reboot, and when the system is rebooted it goes
to the Linux again and suddenly a message of Kernal Panic is appeared.
Please tell me how can I completely remove Linux.
Thanks in advance,

No, in Under Normal Conditions you wont loose any thing. BUT there must
be a free disk partition
to install Linux. All the info on "this partition" will be lost since
the dos file system will be replaced by
ext2 file system. Other partitions will remain fat16/32.
> Is Linux installed on TOP of Windows 98?
No Linux must be installed on a different disk or partition. But you can
also install it as UMSDOS file system
which i do not recommend for stability and performance.
>
> Can I access Windows 98 from the Linux mode?
Yes it is easy. This connectivity is done within Linux setup, as well as
you can do it later.
>
> Can I access my internet browser (Netscape) if
> I'm in Linux mode?
First of all Linux is not a mode. It is an operating system 'like'
windows. ('Like' here do not refer windows's instability,
low performance, damn blue screens, and reboots for every key pressed.)
DO NOT think that Linux is like a Dos Prompt
run under windows in a window.
You can use Netscape of course. But this will be the Netscape which will
be installed during setup of Linux.
When you finished setup you will have an Operating System with full of
programs which you dont need to pay
like Linux, Corel WordPerfect, KDE, GNOME, file managers some games,
compilers etc.
When u finished installation the blue screened box will become an ftp
server, a mail server, and what ever you think
of becoming online. Ah by the way the Normat Conditions here means that
you have right hardware for Linux.
For example a real modem. Most of the PCI modems are winmodems and do
not work under linux which can easily be understood from
their name : WinModem!
> Can I get online from Linux?
With the right modem of course!

Remember that backing up your docs is HIGHLY recommended by most Linux
gurus before going into the linux installation.
And finally, Linux is not for everyone! I mean it.
It does not need any basic skills but needs some curiosity, maybe
hardwork to work a piece of harware, healty eyes to read
pages of howtos and manual pages. But you ll see that the temp.
operating system will become the windows. ;)

My internet connection on my Redhat 5.2 system is not as reliable as the
one I get with the same hardware in Windows. I have the initialization
string all set up properly for the modem (am using ezppp for dialin). I
notice that when downloading, network activity halts when my system is
heavily loaded - this doesn't happen in windows -> is linux worse at
multitasking than Windows?
If anyone can help me out here, it would be greatly appreciated,

You can view the *.cron files and find out what command they are running.=
Then
do "man commandname" to find out what the command does. In the ones you
listed, all are in the man pages on my system except "makewhatis". But, =
I bet
with a little digging it would be shown to be associated with making a
"whatis" command.
