man mail.

But why use "mail" as a mail client? It's an ancient and basic exemplar.
There are lots of other clients. I use elm. Other people like pine. And so on.

Hello,

I used to have perfectly well running system under RH linux 6.1 but I
chose to upgrade to REDHAT 7.0. Now I can not use cdrecord anymore to
burn CDs. I have external CD writer HP7200e. I can use the this writer
as cdrom i.e. I can mount CDs but can not create new CDs. It gives me
error like can not scsi command , inappropriate ioctl for the
device......

cdrecord -scanbus also gives the same error.

Help ! please.....I am getting frustrated now.....

Thanks in advance

Your tip certainly help.
Thank you to all who response. I've check the device major/minor number
and it seems fine. Nothing is wrong with fstab. Yes, it seems like Redhat 6.1
does include the floppy driver. I've checked my /var/log/dmesg and found
the following error:

Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
floppy0: Floppy io-port 0x03f0 in use

Anyone has any idea.

Thanks,

if this is an ide burner, you need to load the scsi emulation module
(ide-scsi)
insmod ide-scsi
i haven't figured out how to put this into /etc/conf.modules yet

if it is scsi, i have no idea what is wrong

good luck,

I am running RedHat 7.0 as server and I have 2 NICs (one is for Internet,
and the other is for LAN), everything works fine. One day, I unplugged the
RJ-45 cable from the internal hub (LAN), the outside NIC is still working
fine.

However, after a while (maybe several hours) the RedHat server cannot access
the web any more, it seems that the network services "time out"?? or shut
down by itself?

Any idea?? Please help.

Subject: ppp problem with ISP

hello,

My ISP uses PAP for ppp connections. I can login fine using Win98 but
kppp won't login using PAP. Neither OS will work usinga terminal window
as my ISP has changed their menu system to where a person can't initiate
a ppp link manually therefore it has to be done automatically.
Unforutnately that doesn't work in Linux, as I said.

I'm getting teh 'receive serial link is not 8-bit clean". I'm reading
curently from search results at Google this error usually means that my
ISP didnt' have ppp running on yet on their end. If that is the case
then how is it Win98 can make a connection to my ISP w/o my
intervention? What does Win98 do that Linux isn't doing to force the
server to start a ppp link? There is no way I can use a expect/send
script (in a terminal window) with kppp like i used to. The closest I
can get is using PAP but ppp times out b/c it says I tried to start ppp
when the server wasn't ready so it just dies. But I dont know how to get
the server to start ppp.

I've also read that it may be something to do with the number of bits or
the settings of how those bits are sent, like 8 bits are sent with Non
parity , something like that. Right now Win98 is configured with an 8N1
setting. Where do i look to see if ppp in Linux is setup the same way
and how would i change it if it's not like that?

How does win98 do it and can i do the same thing in Linux? How do i fix
this? Get a new ISP? It has to be something in
Linux if Windows can do it.

My Net connection is the last thing I need to be able to use Linux the
majority of the time I use my PC so I hope I can get it going soon.

thanks
brandon

To start KDE with "startkde", you have to start x first.
The easy way is, as user, do startx;then in Gnome, pull up a
terminal and do "switchdesk", and choose KDE.

It seems another device may be using the same I/O port address
as the floppy drive (0x3f0).
Check if this is true in the /proc/ioports file, the device
using the 03f0 port address should be listed in there. Mine
looks like this:

<snip>
03f0-03f5 : floppy
03f6-03f6 : ide0
03f7-03f7 : floppy DIR
<snip>

If there is another device using that I/O port then you must
change its setting so the floppy can use it. If there is not,
then the floppy drive may well have failed on you, have you
been able to test the drive with a boot floppy?

Hope this helps,
Bluster

Just type the following at the LILO-Prompt :

LILO: linux single

linux = the label of your kernel
single= the runlevel to boot into

with this option your machine will boot into single-user mode
leaving you with a root-shell.

Is there a configuration tool somewhere for sendmail?
I have looked into the sendmail.cf configuration file and I am
completely stunned! The apache configuration was a piece of cake
compared to this....

I have sent a number of emails via sendmail, both from a script
(formmail.pl) and from the command line, but the mail log tells me
that all have been queued, so there must be something preventing it to
be delivered, probably some configuration setting, but how do I fix
it?
I have visited www.sendmail.org and looked at the docs there, but it
is all too complex. I just want to simply have sendmail deliver the
mail to the recipients...

My system is a RedHat 6.2 (server install) which sits behind a D-Link
home firewall which is handling the NAT stuff towards my ADSL Internet
connection. I don't want sendmail to receive anything, only to send
email out when a form on my website is filled in.
The Linux box knows the gateway and DNS IP:s and it is no problem
pinging anywhere on the Internet from the command prompt, so I can't
figure out why mail is not delivered.

Any advice gratefully received.

Subject: Installing a CDRW Drive on a Linux System
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martin McCormick)
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 23:00:31 GMT

If I install an IDE CDRW drive on a Linux system, is it likely to
work? I wonder how much of the functionality of the drive is
hard-wired in to the device and how much requires special drivers. Of
course the drive comes with a boat-load of software applications all
designed for Windows systems, but all that will be just so many extra
CDROM's in this situation.

What is a good course of action?

This drive will get a slot on an IDE cable plus the power
connection and that's pretty much it.

I don't have a specific drive bought or even picked out yet,
so any suggestions are much appreciated.
