Thanks. It seems to me ASUS P2B series is the way to go, judging from
all the replies. I'll be running Linux and FreeBSD on it.

Thanks.

>shebang line"?????

The unix guru is referring to the first line of an interpreted executable
file. All unixes have something like the Bourne shell at /bin/sh. If you
put the line

#!/bin/sh

at the very front of an executable file, then when you try to execute it
the kernel will start /bin/sh and feed the file to /bin/sh as a command
line argument, which will cause /bin/sh to interpret the file.

This device is also known as "the pound bang hack."
(It's implemented by reserving "#!" as a "magic number" recognized by the
kernel. The other magic numbers identify ELF, a.out, or other binary types.)
See the execve(2) manpage.

You can use it with any command interpreter that can read a controlling
script named on its command line. This is one reason the # character in
column one is recognized as "comment" by all the interpreters, so they can
be invoked in this way. The most common interpreters you'll see used with
the pound bang hack are Bourne Shell (and that includes GNU Bourne-Again
Shell invoked as /bin/sh) and Perl.

There's a standard location for Bourne Shell, but Perl might be

#!/usr/bin/perl
 or
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
 or
#!/bin/perl005

depending on how your Linux setup was put together.
So, find out where the Perl interpreter is on your system, and fix the
first line of your executable Perl Common Gateway Interface program to
point there. And go pbptptptpt!! to those haughty unix gurus who tried
to make you feel inferior with their insider jargon. Shebang indeed.

I'm not reproducing the problem. Here's what I'm using:
        FIC VA503+ with K6/2-350
        64MB PC100 RAM
        ATI PCI Xpert98 video card
        RH 5.2

Netscape 4.60 (Communicator, 128-bit version downloaded from
                netscape's "supported" page).

While I've not visited that particular page before, I have observed
similar behavior at other times. I found NS 4.5 to be pretty much useless
because of the same symptoms. I've read in some of these groups that 4.6
also exhibits that behavior. But there are a number of different LInux
executables from Netscape (not to mention other places) all claiming to
be 4.6, each compiled with different capabilities (128-bit, 56-bit, glibc,
a.out, etc.) I've (knock on wood) had no such trouble with the one I'm
using, though I've only used it for about a week.

: no problems accessing this site using Netscape directly in Windows or

: Speaker's own display (driven by a Matrox Millennium). Nessus uses a
: recent low-end ATI board (the vendor claims it's an Xpert98 board;
: Windows identifies it as an ATI 3D Rage LT Pro AGP 2X; and I'm using the
: Mach 64 X server in Linux). I'm using XFree86 3.3.3.1 on both systems

Check that: Brian posted that he wanted to use the CGI applications
*compiled* under Linux on a different Unix. This is very unlikely to
work. However, it is likely that they should be easy to *recompile* on
the server.

I rather suspect that any webserver that doesn't let you compile C won't
let you use random binaries as CGI anyway...

If someone could provide me with information about how to go about getting
setup with cable-modem access for linux, i'd appreciate it. i'd also
like to have a static IP address for this connection. any and all
information is appreciated, especially pertaining to ISPs that can offer
this service in Fairfax County (Northern Virginia). Thanks!

Thanks for all the tips and info. I think an Alpha box will be overkill
for what I've in mind.

Thanks.

You can use /dev/ht0 or the non-rewinding version /dev/nht0
Use the mt command (have not seen format and I don't think you need it)
If you define TAPE=/dev/nht0:

mt rewind
mt erase
mt eod
mt status
mt tell
etc.
see man mt

Under Linux 2.2 and above (at least - probably earlier too), you can use
/proc/sys/* to tune many parts of the kernel.

For instance, to change the total number of file handles which can be
open at a time, you might do:

echo 16384 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max

Note that if you want to do this on a permanent basis, you should put
lines like that in rc.local - they aren't automatically preserved over
reboots.

There are very few (that I've come across and really wanted to change)
that are only in header files. The default values are probably in header
files...

The documentation for most of this is in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysctl

Hope this helps - I've been mucking around with this a bit recently. I'm
far from an expert, but it's not hard when you get into it...

Well, if you want to get rid of some of the syntax above, you can use:

grep string `find .`

That will only work if there aren't too many files around (it can cope
with quite a few, but don't do it from /) Otherwise you can use xargs:

find . | xargs grep string

There's nothing stupid about find as far as I've found - it's just that
unix utilities take the approach of "do one thing, very well" rather than
the windows approach of "do everything, badly". grep is designed to match
expressions. find is designed to find files. Put them together and you
have a lot of power - there's no point in expecting either of them to do
the other's job.

When a link to file.html is put in a page, and the real name is
file.htm, Apache doesn't find the file. (And the opposite too).

What do I have to do to make Apache treat file.hml and file.htm as
interchangeable?
