You can read how to do that in the UNIX programming FAQ:

Then you haven't found the xdiff home page yet. Version 3.3 of xdiff is
available for several platforms including redhat linux from
http://reality.sgi.com/rudy/xdiff
If you liked the version on sgi then you will like this new version. It has
support for up to *five* files at a time. Automatic merges for three or
more
files. Highlighting differences within the line. Just to mention a few.
Version 3.4 coming soon. i just haven't made the time to put it on my
web site yet.
Enjoy,

Why?
BTW, there is also server side tcl/tk and there are db
extensions for perl. I would imagine that perl + db
extensions would most likely trump php.

I would like to test vmware, but am unwilling to reinstall windows as
a ghost operating System under linux, since it is already installed
and works fine.
I wonder if one could tell vmware to use the preinstalled Windows
system, which includes several partitions, as a ghost system without
rendering it unusuable. Is there a way to keep the original Windows
boot partition bootable after having set it up as a ghost system in
vmware/Linux? I wish to be able to come back to it and boot it on its
own.
Thanks

Have you tried looking in/at .gnome-desktop or .gnome/session in your
home directory? My guess is that one of these is the culprit. If not,
there are a few other .gnome(...) directories around, I believe...

Linux can be installed anywhere. The /boot martition should be uner the
1023 cylindar (under 8GB). it only needs to be a 10 MB partition. IT is
also good to have it on hda or sda if possible.

Make sure that you use the proper serial port devices, /dev/ttyS0 to
/dev/ttyS3, NOT /dev/cua0 to /dev/cua3. Make sure that your /dev/modem
points to the ttyS devices not the cua devices.

Do you have a /root/.ppprc file? If so, what is in it?
iYOu do not need it. The main options are in /etc/ppp/options.

There's a parameter for esd (I believe it was -d, but I'm not positive),

I've installed Red Hat 5.2 on my computer as well as the Informix suite
of products for Linux. We are trying to port our existing 4gl code over
to Linux. We store our source on another machine (Digital UNIX) and
mount the source directory on this machine via NFS. If I try compiling
the code with the Informix c4gl, the gcc compiler will randomly fail on
a module because of "undefined variables" or "parsing error". Yet if I
run the c4gl again, it will compile fine. It seems to be caused by
corruption to the ec or c files that c4gl creates. If I move all of the
modules to a local drive they compile fine. So it seems to be caused by
NFS, but I don't know why. Has anyone seen this type of problem or know
of anything to try to fix it?? Thanks for your help.

Hardware setup is OK. I'm using various Linuses since 1992. (or 1993).
I've met SIG11 in the earliest versions, and on various hardware.
Sometimes this bug escapes after kernel recompiling. I'm sure this situation
with SIG11 caused by memory allocation bug.

Dan, you're the man! - Moving va_list ap to be the first local variable
to be declared really solved the problem.
However I'm still not sure, if this is _required_ according to ANSI C, because
the ANSI standard does _not_ state that 'va_list ap' has to be the first local
variable within a vararg function.
I tried to figure out what exactly va_start does, but this lead me deep into
the mysteries of gcc (__builtin_next_arg ...) and is thus no matter to be
discussed in this forum.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. - I didn't think this could be solved that easily.
Cheers,
Tom.

Windoughs expects a modem to be attached to the other end of the serial
port. I looked into this myself before I broke down and bought a
network-in-a-box. You have a couple of options open to you.
Option 1.
There is a protocol that Windoughs calls "Direct Cable Connection". You
should find that in your Win menus. This is not PPP and if you go this
route, you will need to re-compile support for that protocol into the Linux
kernel.
Option 2.
Find the configuration file for your modem in Windoughs. I found it once
upon a time on my Wintendo, but I can't, for the life of me, remember where.
Try using "find" to look for a file containing your modem's name. When you
find this file you may be able to tweak it so that it doesn't insist on
dialing, but then again you may not be able to. Good luck, you'll need it.
Option 3.
On the Linux side, make a program or script that behaves like a modem would.
Easier said than done, but also easier than option 2.
Option 4.
This might seem obvious, but you could get a modem.

You just uttered the standard "sun-vs-intel" retort, in knee-jerk fashion,
without reading what I wrote.
I specifically said CPU constrained tasks. and disqualified floating point,
which sensible people know sparc has an edge on.
If you have something that is CPU based, it will pretty much sit in memory,
and stay in L2 cache. So, reliability of disks, etc, etc, etc do not come into
play. In which case, a 500mhz intel box is faster than an ultra, and just
as reliable.
Still assuming the constraints above, a simple 1cpu vs 1cpu box, will have
intel way in front, for price vs cpu I'm not sure how well the scaling will
affect things, but a four=way 500mhz pentium box will be a lot cheaper than a
4-way ultra box, and equivalent or better integer performance.
some price points:
http://www.gateway.com/prod/sb_e5250550xl_prodinfo.shtml
a 2-way Xeon 550 mhz computer, for $6499, NO DISCOUNT
a 4-way Xeon 550mhz computer, $10,800 [512k L2 cache]
a 4-way Xeon 550mhz computer, $17,700 [1-meg L2 cache]
a 4-way Xeon 550mhz computer, $28,400 [2-meg L2 cache]
compare to sun's cheapest 4-way box, an E450:
4-way 250mhz E450, $20,900 list price [1-meg L2 cache]
4-way 300mhz E450, $30,000 list price [2-meg L2 cache]
4-way 300mhz E450, $36,500 list price [4-meg L2 cache]
The 250mhz isn't particularly competative when it comes to CPU power.
I'd like to see some integer comparisons between the best xeon box, and the
best E450 box. But good luck trying to get a hold of 4x400mhz ultra-cpus right
now.
I HATE this. I much prefer sun boxes. But you'll certainly pay the premium for
them.

When you start X it grabs the first console that is not open, for example if
you have 6 consoles at startup (the default?) then X will grab console 7. In
the case with 6 consoles Alt-F7 would switch back the the X console.
BTW I found a HOWTO on editing you keymap to make the Numeric Keypad to a
console switch but what really interested me is that it told you how to
define a key to switch to the /Previous/ console. Like surfing TV almost.
Unfortunatetly I don't have the HOWTO anymore.

When did this change (or is this just another RedHatism)?
The usual place for kernel source is /usr/src/linux
(at least according to the Kernel-HOWTO at the Linux Documentation Project,
and the Slackware distribution I'm running).

Sorry, I was thinking of my FreeBSD system. Oops.
