My problem is that I cant compile or run any gtk based programs. So I
decided to remove gtk and glib and try to re-install the whole thing again. I
install glib with no major difficulties but when i tried to ./configure
--x-includes=/usr/X11R6/includes --x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib gtk I get libX11
not found. How do I fix this, so i can install gtk again and be able to run
gtk based programs. Thank You. BTW Im using caldera 2.4 on a toshiba

Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 01:25:59 -0400
Hello,
I trying to create an account for my family w/o a password so they can
play some games. This is a private system so I'm not worried about the
security aspect. I created the new account but didn't make a password
and it wouldn't let me log in so I tried making using passwd on the
account (as root) and it wouldn't let me make a blank password.
Is it possible to have an account w/o a password and if so how?
I'm running RH6.2 i386.
TIA!

I have similar situation. But I decided at once to have sendmail, what is
already when you install Linux and a one of the tcpd pop3 deamon. It working
perfect.
I have only changed inded.conf file to activate this deamons, and everythink is
working

It is very easy, just edit /etc/shodow file and delete encrypted pasword
between ":", and that the system will not ask for password for proper
login name.
If you do not have shodow password just edit password file.

man insmod says:
OPTIONS

running kernel and the version of the kernel for

So you want to try "insmod -f tulip.o"

Hi,
When authenticating to Apache AuthConfig directory (from any browser) for

the first login the system asks for the user and password again. After
second login everything works ok.
Does anyone know what the reason could be?

Actually windows doesn't identify the FS on the drive, it merely looks
at the partition ID to identify a drive, so when you format a win32
partition with ext2, windows will see the drive, assign it a drive
letter and then be realy confused :-(
Result it will constantly ask you to format the drive. An annoying, but
frequently seen problem (that can ofcourse be easily solved).

You are hardly alone! (And it is not restricted to newbies.)
But there are some easy fixes, and some elegant fixes.
You can type in "reset" and hit return, and it probably will fix
things. But then again, it might not. In particular I commonly
get in a fix where clearing the screen does not work, and reset
doesn't fix that.
Here is a trick that will fix *anything*. Put some version of
this into your ~/.bashrc file. If you have standardized on
using one size of xterm, and that is the only shell command line
you ever see, then you only need one alias defined. On the
other hand, if you might have half a dozen different sizes or
other varieties of shell screens, you may need to define either
different ones using different names, or have your ~/.bashrc
file look at the TERM variable and define an alias differently
for different terminals.
# basic command, for a 80x25
alias sane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows 25 columns 80'
# generic version, no size...
alias sane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1'
# my idea of a "standard size xterm"
alias xsane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows 30 columns 100'
# 80x24 terminal (vt100/vt102)
alias vsane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows 24 columns 80'
###
### Here is one way to select different definitions of "sane"
###
if [ "${TERM}" = "emacs" ]
then
# I do a lot of things to make an emacs shell work right,
# such as get rid of the color with my ls aliases, change
# the prompt, and redefine my "sane" command.
export PS1='\h::\u \w >'
stty sane -onlcr onocr -echo -ixon -ixany rows 30 columns 100
stty -onlcr
alias ll='/bin/ls -lF'
alias la='/bin/ls -alF'
alias ls='/bin/ls -xF'
elif [ "${TERM}" = "ansi.sys" ]
then
# set up for a DOS terminal using ansi.sys
alias sane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows 25 columns 80'
stty sane -ixon -ixany rows 25 columns 80
elif [ "$TERM" = "xterm" ]
then
alias sane='echo -e "\\033c";tput is2;stty sane line 1 rows 30 columns 100'
else

Set MOZILLA_HOME to you directory that Netscape is located in. In my
case, the netscape files are in /opt/netscape so what I did was put
MOZILLE_HOME=/opt/netscape
export MOZILLA_HOME
into my .bashprofile. I'm sure there are other places to put it too,
but that was convienent and it worked. Be aware - if you are running
multiple users, you'll need to add that to ALL of their .bashprofile(s)

You compile software you need more than just the runtime libraries on which
they depend, you also need the development packages. Your distribution CD or
ftp site should have Xlib development packages (C headers and static
libraries) available, get those and install them.

If your configurations says that you should start PPP at boot,
reconfigure it so that it doesn't. Try creating an empty file in
'/etc/ppp' called 'no_ppp_on_boot' (or rename 'ppp_on_boot' to
'no_ppp_on_boot' if it is available).

X Window System clients are the applications which display to a system
running an X Window System server. If you want to run X clients remotely on
a UNIX machine and have them display on the MS Windows machine that you're
sat at, you need an X server for windows.
My personal favorite is eXceed.

I have two problems with that approach:
1) It doesn't seem to work. As a test I chose text/plain (which had
_no_ app specified for viewer) and filled in "/usr/bin/gless %f" (by
analogy with the editor entry), clicked OK and tried "viewing" a
text/plain file -- still get old viewer (appears to be
/usr/bin/gnomepager-applet). Logged out and back in; no change.
Ctl-Alt-backspace and log back in; no change. Rebooted and log
back in; no change. Ran out of ideas...
2) To change each of almost 30 text types for, say, 4 or 5 users
would be very tedious and, after living with gless for a while I might
find that I wanted to try a different viewer (or revert back to
gnomepager-applet(?)). That's why I said that I wanted to change
the _default_ behaviour (and though I didn't spell it out, I really
mean, system-wide default).

An X server is the software that 'owns' the display, keyboard, and
mouse. It provides graphics display and data entry services to other
applications. An X server owns TCP address 6000 (and others) which is
used as the rendevous point for all X clients conversing with that
server. In the Microsoft Windows world, the X server would be
equivalent to the GDI support of the MSWindows OS.
An X client is the software that, as part of it's processing, requests
keystroke or mouse data from an X server, or provides graphical data
to an X server. In the Microsoft Windows world, this would be
equivalent to the applications that use the WIN32 API.
What you are looking for is an X server for the MSWindows platform.
There are several very good purchased products out there: eXceed,
Xwin-32, etc. - check Tucows for their list of X servers for WIN32.

The problem was not that the ZIP drive does not work with ECP.
The problem was that the ParIde system for Linux does not work
with ECP, which is also written in the documentation. However
EPP is faster than ECP, at least with my SparQ drive it is.
The speed for reading is as far as i remember:
SPP: less than 200 kb/sec
ECP under DOS: 300 kb/sec
EPP under DOS: 400 kb/sec
EPP under Linux: 500 kb/sec
For some reasons many new computers come with the BIOS default
set to SPP, does anyone have a very good explanation for that?

own articles and reviews once in a while, but to make a site unique, you
need more than just
a few articles every now and then.
That's why I am using this way to reach a bigger audience and maybe to find
some 'friends' and
'specialists' to help me keep the site up-to-date, write article(s), write
own programs and use
justBE.com as plattform to distribute these 'products'.
Some of you might feel sort of 'offended' or something like that right now,
because maybe I didn't
meet the newsgroup's topic, but please understand that this is the only way
to reach the few of you
that are interested in helping a new website.
For the rest of you, maybe you want to have a look at the website, and tell
me what you think so far.
thank you for your time,
cheers,
