It sounds like you have your root partition set up wrong, try looking
to see which partition is set to "Linux Native" then boot to it
with the root= parameter to Lilo.

First, get rid of your Winmodem and get a real modem.

Second, just download them onto your Windows drive, and mount it as
type vfat.

On all the Linux dist. sites, they point to Oracle's web site where you can
"get registered for the next beta or next release of Linux Oracle 8.x.x"...
and I can never find the right link much less actually get the CD.

The best I've done from the Oracle site itself is getting 8.0.5.1 EE (which
I'm not looking forward to installing). So where can I register or obtain
the CD???

hello all,

I've posted a lot of questions here concerning my lack of understanding
of the /var partition; yesterday I set up my soon-to-be main server and
used a very unusual partitioning for /var; I'd like to hear your opinion
before it gets in production..

- I mounted /var in a vey small partition (20mb);
- symlinked the big directories out of it;
  - important data (mail spool) to a 'safe' partition;
  - unimportant data (news spool, squid cache) to an 'unsafe' partition;
- kept only the highly volatile data (logs, var/lock, var/run) in the
  same partition;

it looks good to me; I'm asking your opinion just because it is unusual
and I am definitely not a skilled linux man :-(

TIA!

I don't think it's a RedHat-ism as my RedHat system puts the
kernel source in /usr/src/linux. Other source rpm's unpack
into /usr/src/redhat, which also seems quite reasonable to
me.

After doing an upgrade to Red Hat 6.0 (from 5.2), my LaTeX (which was
also presumably upgraded using RPM) broke. I checked the
/tmp/upgrade.log for any error messages, but it said everything was
installed fine. But I get the following error, which didn't happen with
the same *.tex file yesterday:

and they will work correctly but if I just type the executable like:

it will say that the command is not found. I know that I have to modify my

Should be. I had a copy of SO 5.0 from a magazine cover which needed
registering to work past 20 days. There is an option to fill in a form
for mailing or faxing, and a fax number. Since I had e-mail and WinFax

days.

Glad to say I am now on the net in Linux.

I thought there was a path missing or something like that, but it wasn't

because, as with apparently every other useful program written with those, it
requires you to have a "special" version of the libraries compiled.

Seems tcl/tk is useless out of the box. otherwise why would there be all
these customizations?

sheesh.

wrong machine.

The machine I looked at (ALS9200?) supported redundant power supplies, and a
buncha disks. doesn't support so many disks. BUt I am following on from my
previous thread that was saying intel CPU/integer performance is better
for the money than sparc. so that isn't so relavant.

But I tried to make the configuration fairly similar on the E450.
 Just picked the minimum stuff for each computer: 256 megs RAM, 1 disk, etc.

>As for NT vs solaris...we'll leave that one alone.

I never said "NT vs solaris". I said "sparc vs intel".
OBVIOUSLY, you'd run solaris on both :-)

        Not only that, but one can (apparently -- it seemed to work
for us) put another device on the IRQ that would have been used by
the printer port without messing anything up. Would this also work
under Linux if one told it not to use the parallel port (or whatever)
IRQ? This could help free up some IRQ's on some machines --
especially necessary these days since some machines come out of the
box with no IRQ's left over.

My user name actually doesn't have an addition symbol in it (but it
does have a numeral '1'). If you are seeing this in an e-mail
message, it is because I am posting it and e-mailing it at the same
time -- normal e-mail messages from me do not have this feature.

        Does any more straightforward way exist to search for a string
inside of files in a directory tree? I looked at the man pages for
grep and its relatives, but these do not seem to have an option for
traveling down directory trees.

I have an external Iomega Zip drive and I'm trying to mount it to RH 6.0.
Has anyone done this. Please let me know the mount commands if you have.
thanks...
