Linux has been installed first ........ and installed on the Master Boot Record
(the first sectors on your hard drive). Im no expert but I load NT first and let
it be resident on the MBR and when loading linux at the option to install lilo to
"MBR" or "first sectors of partition" select first sectors on partition then it
woont overwrite the NT bootloader. At reboot lilo will load and at that prompt
type in "dos" to go to nt bootloader or at lilo prompt hit enter and linux will
load. Again i am just a rookie but thats what i have going. I loaded NT then 98
then red hat 6.1 and everytning works fine. hope this helps and now i have a
question for you...... im using the Gnome front end for X windows what do you
use?... im thinking about installing KDE but a little reluctant cause i dont want
to trash my setup do to my inexperience (stupidity)...... just curious. regards,

Hi,
The printk_R**** is versioned kernel symbol, so you also have to compile
your module with defining MODVERSION to generate versioned symbol in your
module same as kernel.

Yes it would be possible to do this, and someone else told
you how. There could be a couple of problems though.
First, it is unlikely with a 20 GB disk and a single
partition mounted on a single mount point that everything
will be below cylinder 1024. So you may not be able to
boot Linux from the hard drive using lilo. (Perhaps you
will be able to do it withe linear option.) So most likely
you will want a separate small /boot partition. That means
you will have to create at least two partitions. Then you
can use the cp -a command to copy but you will have to
do it separately for each partition. |Also, you will have
to make sure you /etc/fstab reflects the new partitioning.

The other problem is that you don't say whether this will
end up as the primary or secondary disk in your machine.
How you ultimately configure lilo will depend on that.
Negotiating this part can be a bit tricky.

Indeed. All True Hackers(TM) know everything, so having holy wars about
"which editor is best" without even defining 'editor' and 'best' is just
pointless.

You would probably be better off rewriting your tar command
so it doesn't try to invoke absolute paths. That is better
form anyway and you won't get the error messages.

It sounds as if there is something rather seriously wrong.
The bash shell is the program /bin/bash. If other users
get this shell by default, then most likely root's path
was messed up somehow. Login as another user and use
su
to become root. You will inherit the path of the other user.
Then do
cd /root
(if that is root's home directory) and examine .bash_profile
and .bashrc to see if something strange was done to the path.
Here is what I have in root's .bash_profile

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin
ENV=$HOME/.bashrc
USERNAME="root"

export USERNAME ENV PATH

It may depend on your cable supplier, but most people seem to
find it runs with no problems. Under RedHat 6.1 and the
generic kernel, you need the proper alias statement in
/etc/conf.modules for your ethernet card and you need to
set up your eth0 interface properly with netcfg (obtainable
for example from linuxconf or control-panel).

Booting at the lilo prompt with
linux root=/dev/hda7
(assuming hda7 is the new name of your root partition) might
work. Then you could modify your /etc/fstab and your
/etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo.

If that doesn't allow you to boot and fix things, use
tom's root boot disk as someone else recommended.

I dunno what they're about, but I get the same w/ RH 6.0 and updated RPMs.
I haven't noticed anything go wrong, so I guess they're benign even though
CRITICAL does sound pretty bad.

I've read that the GTK library is still under quite a lot of development
and so different versions are not very compatible, unless someone knows

At the Mandrake homepage they suggest that you allow the BIOS to handle
the PNP. So for my AMD BIOS I would say that I DON'T have a PNP aware OS.

This is cut from http://www.linux-mandrake.com/userguide/en/install/003.html#16

Changing your BIOS settings is most often performed by holding down the DEL
key during startup. Unfortunately, there are many types of
BIOS in use today and they each have their own technique, you will need to
find out what works for your PC. Once you are in the BIOS,
the option to look for is often called PNP OS installed (or Plug'n'Play OS
installed). Set this option to No: the BIOS will then initialize
any plug'n'play devices and that can help Linux recognize some devices in your
machine which it would not otherwise.

                                                                    -John

$netscape --help for options
$netscape -geometry =WxH+X+Y

Get what you like and put this in your menu or batch file to run netscape.

I've noticed that if you exit Netscape by its own file->exit menu then it
"remembers" it's previous state (size) when reopened in Fvwm2. If you kill it
or close it w/ a window manager close it doesn't. Maybe this will do it for
you?

                                                                    -John

Cgi-bin is protected by default, what I would do is parse the entry
for the script to run for any commands or semi-colons before execution
to prevent any hacking/commands through a perl script just for security.

Sounds like a bad nameserver IP address. Try to telnet places, ftp, and
probably most importantly PING! Start slow and then work your way up to
netscape, 'cause when it can't connect you have to wait a lot longer... First
ping the address of your ISP connection. Then try $host www.yahoo.com, that'll
tell you if the nameserver is right.
                                                    Good Luck,

Subject: WinLinux 2000 Configuration modules.cfg Error
Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 14:41:22 GMT

Hello, I'm setting up WinLinux 2000 final beta for the first time, and when
trying to complete the Configuration Utility, I get a "Cannot create file
\winlinux\modules.cfg" error when I reach Finish. Then I press Okay and if
I try to Cancel the Utility I'm asked "Do you really want to abort
configuration?" When I answer yes to this I get the error message "Cannot
create file \winlinux\devcfg.out" Thus I can't even close the program
until I reboot my computer. I've tried doing a search on Deja and it
doesn't look like this has been mentioned before. Does this have anything
to do with my computer crashing the first time i ran this??? Has anyone
come across this problem with WinLinux? I can't believe even this Win9x
version of Linux is so difficult to set up!

Well, there you have it; no answers because there aren't any.
It's going to be a long time before Linux is popular on the desktop.
But who cares. If I don't like it, I don't have to use it. But I
wouldn't count on Linux stocks to be moving anytime soon.
