What is the best os to run on a compaq presario laptop P-150 16MB 1.2 GigHD?
Is it possible to run a dialup connection to a server setup for windows
clients, such as netzero, whereby the connection is successfully made thru a
regular win95 dun client (not with their bloated adware) using linux and
some
type of windows emulator or just plain linux?
Generally is there an os that will give better stability than win95 and
more logic and yet afford one the capability of running windows apps
when a linux equivalent cannot be found?

hello!
i've tried bothe the 2.2.18 and 2.4.0 kernels on my
slackware7.1 box. i have a soundblaster live value
soundcard, which i hope to get working in the kernel.
but it doesnt work.
[root ~]# cat /dev/sndstat
cat: /dev/sndstat: No such device
i have looked in dmesg too.
for 2.2.18 i saw this:
###
Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.7, 16:03:22 Jan 3 2001
emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 4 model 0x20 found, IO at 0xe800-0xe81f, IRQ 10
...
Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.7, 16:03:22 Jan 3 2001
###
why the same line twice??
and in 2.4.0:
###
Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.7, 23:01:35 Jan 7 2001
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0b.0
PCI: The same IRQ used for device 00:07.2
emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 4 model 0x20 found, IO at 0xe800-0xe81f, IRQ 10
###
what is wrong?
in the SOUND HOWTO it says i should see the lines
'Sound initialization started' and 'Sound initialization complete',
and as you see i don't.
what is wrong?
what could i do?

Lucien,
So I'm still not certain why I'm not getting 100mbit/s transfers. My
windows machine shows me a little icon in the icon tray of the
NIC. When I double clikc on it, it says it's 100mbit/s. Hmm.. maybe
since I was transferring from my linux hard drive to my windows
mounted hard drive through the ethernet cross-over cable, the hard
drive writes could have been the bottle neck. Not sure.
Oh well... I won't worry about it too much for now. Gots lots of other
stuff related to linux that I need to figure out first.

I have just installed SuSE 6.4 but can't seem to get any sound from it. I

Hi,
Everyone else has mentioned that you need a hub or cross-over ethernet
cable. Just to explain..
Network units are connected in a star topology - with a hub or switch in
the centre. These ethernet cables can be refered to as 10baseT, twisted
pair ethernet, CAT5 or CAT4 or RJ45 - each referes to different standards
(wire, plug etc.) but are often referred to as the same thing.
Now, buying a hub to just connect 2 cards is a waste so you can use a
crossover ethernet cable. This has had the cores rewired to simulate the
connections made withing a 2 port hub - make sure you use one of these
rather than a regular twisted pair.

Huh? What does the system map have to do with .conf files?

Okay so how do I regenerate the system map? After compiling 2.4.0 a
System.map was in the linux src directory. Should I use that one?
If I wanted to 'regenerate' it how would I do it? Thanks.

What is the System.map used for? Is it used on bootup? I noticed the
2.4.0 kernel recognized the System.map-2.4.0, even when the symlink
was set to System.map-2.2.16-22. Who uses the symlink?

Did you ever find anything? I am looking for a program that is
comparable to N-TRACK studio in Windows. It's a multi-track recording
program. Allows you to record from the mic, then play it back with
recording another track. Then again and again. And finally you can mix
down all tracks to a single audio file that can be burned to CD.
Anything like that exist for linux do you know?

And what happens when you try it as a normal user? The documentation
for kppp (read it. now.) states that kppp must be owned by root.root
and SUID. If that's not the case, do it if you wish to use kppp.

DNS problem. Find out the IP addresses of your ISP's primary and
secondary nameservers, and put them into the appropriate places in
kppp's Setup->Account dialog. Versions of pppd that are newer than the
one that shipped with RH 6.0 obviate the need for this, as they can use
peer DNS.

RTFM first. http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ and http://linuxnewbie.org/ for
starters.

^^^^^^
ITYM "directory". Anyway, it does the same thing as "chmod 773
<directory>" does, but it sets the SGID bit and the Sticky Bit. If an
executable has the SGID bit set, it will set its effective group ID to
the group ID of the file's owner, not the group ID of the user who
executed the file. Similar thing for SUID. An executable owned by root
and SUID has all the power of root, no matter who executes it. "su" and
"login" must be SUID root, and "ping" is often SUID root.
IIRC, if SUID/SGID are set on a directory, files created within that
directory are owned by the directory's user/group rather than the
creator's user/group.
The Sticky Bit doesn't do anything on normal files on modern Unix
systems. It used to be used for large, frequently used programs like
vi[0], to tell the system "always keep a copy of this thing in memory if
possible". This minimized swapping and improved performance. On a
directory, the Sticky Bit means "only the owner of a file may delete
that file within this directory." /tmp is usually chmodded 1777 (read,
write, execute for everyone, with Sticky set so normal users can't rm
/tmp/* ) Further info by entering "info chmod"....

The KDE project has developed a web browser, called konqueror; while
the Gnome project does have an HTML renderer library, it has not yet
been integrated to produce a full scale web browser.
Netscape is a product of Netscape Communications Corporation, having
_absolutely nothing_ to do with the Gnome project.

I used it. The same thing happens no matter what program I use. PPPD is
started but the server does not do its part and b/c of that pppd on my
end dies. I can't help that Linux doesn't work the same way Windows does
in this respect. I thought it would but you tell me why I can get a ppp
link started with win98 with only providing my username and password but
i CANT do the same in Linux. The only different is the OS. My ISP said
with the new digital system supplying a username and password is all
that is needed and that would fall under the protocal of PAP, however it
doesn't work that simply in Linux, only in Windows.

i got linux on the Net before my ISP switched their system around on
me. However, Windows is still able to connect so why can't Linux with
pppd?
Windows is somehow able to communicate with the dial up server to get a
ppp link going, why can't Linux? On my end pppd is started but on the
ISP end ppp is not. So the question is, what is windows doing that
Linux isn't?
why is it i can supply a username, password, and phone number with
Windows but the same isn't true for Linux?
This is my connection log for Windows:
01-07-2001 18:48:20.78 - Recv: <cr><lf>CONNECT 49333 V42bis<cr><lf>
01-07-2001 18:48:20.78 - Interpreted response: Connect
01-07-2001 18:48:20.78 - Connection established at 49333bps.
After i see 'connect 49333 v42bis' in the terminal window using Linux my
ISP's menu appears and waits for me to type in a '1' to start a shell
login or a 'q' to quit. THere is no option, anymore, to start a ppp
link anymore. However using Windows a link is still started somehow,
without my intervention. In order to do that obviously ppp has to be
started on my end and at the dial up server. In Linux it's started on
my end but it's not on my ISP's end thus causing ppp on my end to die
b/c of it not getting any response from my ISP. So the question is what
is making the difference between win98 and linux?
If i know that i can maybe compensate for it in linux. W/o knowing that
I don't know in which direction to go.

Find a short .wav file or something, then "cat example.wav > /dev/dsp"
as root. That should make the speakers do *something*, even if the
sound's distorted and bursty. If that works, "chmod 666 /dev/dsp
/dev/mixer" as root, and your problems should be over.
BTW, the alphabetical commands for chmod don't always do what you
expect. The octal modes are often a better choice. FWIW, the result
you got with "chmod +w" seems to be expected behavior, though "chmod
ugo+w" does the appropriate thing. HTH,

Read The Fine Manual that came with your SuSE 6.4 distro.

So who configured it, and why weren't you paying attention when they did
what they did?

Audio CDs do not have filesystems on them, so you cannot mount them.
Use an audio CD player to play audio CDs; SuSE 6.4 shipped with lots of
those and kscd the default KDE CD Player is a reasonable choice.

See above.

"Sohoware"? Never heard of 'em. It's most likely a standard Ethernet
card of some (cheap) type that got a marketing company's name slapped on
it. "cat /proc/pci" can give you a deal of useful information on all
the PCI cards in your system; do that and post the portions of the
output that relate to your sound+NIC and someone will be able to help
you out. Good luck, and visit those places mentioned above!

I'm rather fuzzy on this but I think it gives LILO a map to parts of the
kernel. Probably does a lot of other things to.
A trip to www.linuxdoc.org may be in order.

I have a Netgear FA311 PCI card. I got the driver (FA311.o) from the
Netgear website and it works fine.
