Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 10:14:16 -0700

Hi, after establishing a working ppp connection to my isp,
I tried to run netscape only to be disappointed with a message
saying it couldn't find
                    libstdc++.so.2.8

having a look at my /usr/lib I see

                    libstdc++.so.2.9
        and several minor revisions of
                    libstdc++.so.2.7.2 etc...

Do I need libstdc++.so.2.8 ???

Any suggestions???

I don't want to download another netscape... it is too big...

Cheers:)

Here is what I would do:

1. type in dmesg and look to see what your cdrom is assigned - hdc,hdd
whatever.

2. take the lazy way like me and type this in: mount -t auto /dev/hdx
/dev/cdrom
replace the x with your drive.

*shrug* locate works for me and has done for years; I've no idea why
it doesn't work for you. Have you reported this problem as a bug?

Compressed files are unique to Debian? Right...

Is it possible to network a couple win95 boxes to a linux box and use the
linux box to connect to my ISP. Then both pc's could work online
simultaneously. I have never done this. Both of the win95 boxes have linux
installed as well, and I'm sure I could network that scenario, but not sure
on the other. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks, Now the meaty problem for me.

I downloaded a workaround. Hope its the right one. ropen.tar.gz. Got in
untarred and setup in a directory in /home/me/ropen and now Im having
some difficulty.

It seems I have to run makefile on it. The files untarred are as
follows:

GPL
Makefile
open.c
open.so
rplayer

I dont know how to install it. Any help sure would be appreciated.

do you have a line for your cdrom in /etc/fstab
if yes, please post it

how exactly did you type the mount command?
what was the error message if any?

what kind of cdrom do you have? SCSI?

Yes, but need the OS not support error-handling. With ECC you can
correct 1 bit errors. If one occurs, that should be written to the
syslog. If there is a 2 bit error, the app whose data caused it, should
be killed (or stopped) and a reboot should occur (or a try to do such).

Does linux support such?

I'm happily running five raid0 and linear volumes with kernel 2.2.9
(praying that Alan & Co. find the fs corruption thing in kernels 2.2.x,
x>=8, before I find it *out*). Maybe you should send along a copy of

Ensure that NTFS support is either compiled into the kernel or that
fs/ntfs.o is found in the loadable modules directory beneath /lib.

Then, it's simply the standard mount command:

    mount -t ntfs <dev> <mount_point>

In my case, it's:

    ``mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /nt-c''

- Be cautioned to make absolutely sure that your ``updatedb'' doesn't
include any ntfs mount points. On a compressed NTFS partition, there's a
  gaping memory leak black hole.

- Also, until (and unless) NTFS support matures, it is strongly advised to
  mount the partition read only.

Well, that applies if you want to update your whole system. If you want

I have 18 W95 machines connected to a Linux computer. That computer
served me very well as a file, and web server. In my school they have
begun installing a WAN. Everything is done with a lot of secrecy, and
no one has any answers to my questions! I would like to connect one
or more Linux computers to the WAN. What information do I need to
have? Can I connect the Linux without having an IP address for each
computer? Technicians install Novell on each client and connect them
through cat 5 cable to a hub. I can't tell where the other side of the
hub is going. I looked in Windows 95 Network properties and I didn't
see any IP addresses.

Enable NTFS read (and maybe even write) support in the kernel
configuration in section filesystems, recompile and then you should
succeed with
<something> = ntfs
and maybe an "-o ro" added, if you did not compile for write support.

I haven't seen this (as a sideline, I maintain tools directories on several
machines at work).

otoh, there are a number of more volatile programs which we see discussed
every day in this newsgroup as the newest/greatest thing, which don't
appear to build anywhere but Linux - so back to my original question, which
no one's bothered to answer in other than vague terms: what's wrong with
tcl/tk?

(next thing I know, you'll be telling us not to use Perl - same degree
of volatility)

Hi everybody !

At the moment I'm doing some development for a backup application under
Unix.
Now I encountered the problem to deal with tapes under Unix. Since I
never
used a tape under linux I've no experience at all how to do that.

What I need is the following:

(1) How can I read/write ordinary text files from/to the tape? Do I have
to use the device name (/dev/tape) or what?

(2) How Do I know the filename of the next file following on tape?

(3) What will happen, if I read beyond the eof of a file? Will I arrive
automatically at the start of the next file?

Would be very happy if there's somebody out who can help me. Thanks.

it was even easyer than i thought - i just let Netscape point to
rplayer instead of rvplayer - then the tiny rplayer script takes care of
the rest.

Netscape loads the app find now and plays - pix & sound.

I'm not 100% sure if you have a plugin version of the player.
If you once downloaded the RedHat version, that one is said to not
be plugin-able :P
That's why i picked the ELF version for Linux - more messy but why not,
when it all works ok.

hi there,

These dayz i spend more time *trying* to get things to
work on Linux than actually doing anything productive.
It seems almost 80% of time is spent trying to compile *tar_gz
files and rpm'ing rpms that i download.
And more than half the times they dont compile straight-away.

======
eg: 1.
I wanted to install ghostview on my machine .
So i did "rpm -i gv*..rpm".
I got error saying failed dependecy libXaw3d.so.6
or whatever..not found

So i checked rpm -qal|grep 'libXaw3d'
and got /usr/lib.../libxaw3d..
i suppoes that means i have the file on my system.

Why is it then that i am getting 'failed dependecy libXaw3d.so.6' error.

======
eg: 2.
I wanted to install cooledit (a texteditor/IDE).
I downloaded all the required files.
Unzipped and un-tarred the files
Actually went thru the README and INSTALL files.
Made sure i has all the required libraries gtk and glibc etc
and the required versions.

Then i did:
./configure ## no errors reported here
make

then all hell broke loose and it spat the following errors at me:

gcc -O2 -s -Wall -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -I/usr/X11R6/include
-L/usr/X11R6/lib -o .libs/cooledit cooledit.o find.o editoptions.o
mancmd.o
options.o debug.o cooleditmenus.o shell.o mail.o complete.o manpage.o

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory /usr/local/cooledit-3.10.0'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

Why is giving me the above mentioned error even though i have the
required libraries.? And if the libraires were not there or not the
required
version why didnt "configure" mention those errors or inadequecy?

======
these are just few of the un-successful attempts that i had to face.

======
The common cause seems to be make utility or rpms not being able to find
the
libraries even though they are there.
What can be done to remedy this, what are the possible ways to tell rpm
package where to look for libraries.?

======
Why is there so much inconsistency in the requirement of
the libraries that are needed by programs to compile.
Almost every program i download seems to require its own
set of libraries and versions of the same.

And i would request developers to post binaries, it would
save such a lot of time for persons who want to do some
work at Linux rather than spend dayz trying to figure how
to configure and compile.

======
Any tips or solutions or comments to my above mentioned problems would
be
very welcome and much appreciated.

your radiocard problem :
since i got no personal experience with radio cards , i just can ask if
you have already compiled a new kernel that supports your card ??
if not, goto /usr/src/linux
type: "make xconfig" (while running X) else type: "make config"
make your kernel configuration, save it , then type :
"make dep; make clean; make bzImage; make modules; make
modules_install;"
dont forget to reconfigure lilo...

your soundcard problem :

you just need to load the module..
find the correct module for your soundcard and type something like :
modprobe gravis.o io=0x0220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=330
dont use these values...were just examples..
better read the /usr/doc/howto/en/EN-Sound-HOWTO.txt

hope that'll help ya.

Go on the Vmware com news groups. There is one fellow there who claims
he got VmWare operating on windows NT.

I for one have had difficulty getting the raw disk option on Windows 95.

The rule of thumb is fresh installs work best, thats why the virutal disk
option works so well.

Good luck

Copy the files "rplayer" and "open.so" to the dir where your realplayer
is.
Then edit the "rplayer" file so it reflects the correct path.
Then write ./rplayer

I just compiled the ELF binary of RealAudio for Linux to check this out,
and after some messing around with making symbolic links to shared
libraries it seems to work fine (after some serious crashes hehe) Not
sure Netscape will load realaudio as a plugin yet but i think it's
possible - a symbolic link from a fake file rvmedia in
../netscape/plugins for instance, to rplayer somewhere (where the real
rplayer also is) should do the trick.

Anyways: it works just fine and since i'm blessed with an antique
soundcard it plays wonderful 8 bit sound and displays god knows what
kinda colordepth video. :)

Those are source RPMS. Go into the i386 directory above the SRPMS directory
in the
ftp archive and get the binary rpms. If you are curious, the source RPMS was
installed in
/usr/src/redhat. Just delete it from there if it is using up precious space.
