Always had an itch to see how good you really were at this networking stuff?
Well, here's your chance to finally test your mettle. This problem has
stumped everyone I know and they have all been forced to relinquish their
crowns. So, it's up for grabs... anyone who helps me solve this problem,
wins all bragging rights AND the vaunted no-prize! So what is this problem?

Briefly, I just installed Redhat 6.0/WinNT dualboot and I have IP aliasing
enabled according to the scheme below (primary interface has a real IP;
first alias has a real IP; 2nd alias has a fake IP). So the problem is that
the IP aliasing seems to timeout after a while under RedHat. I'm using a
Linksys Etherfast (with the latest tulip driver) and the aliases work fine
under Windoze NT. However, after about 40 minutes, none of the aliases are
pingable under redhat. The primary interface stays functional throughout
but the aliases all seem to timeout. A reboot or poweroff doesn't change
this. The only thing that seems to help is to remove all the aliases AND
the primary interface and then reenter the primary and aliases again. It
then works again for about 40 minutes, after which time the aliases time out
once again (but the primary interface continues to work). I've tried using
both ifconfig and the netcfg from the control-panel to no avail.

So there you have it... if you can help solve this not only will you have my
eternal undying gratitude; not only will you be able to wear the Linux Guru
Crown with pride; but you'll also be the winner of the one and only no-prize
(offer valid in the contiguous united states; we are an equal opportunity
empire; local sales tax may apply).

Thanks in advance!

Rick.

impossible, so what's the harm in trying the impossible? I think it's
impossible to fly, so why not try to fly? I think it's impossible to
break the sound barrier, so why not try to break the sound barrier?

In this case, it would be "It's impossible to write a Linux virus,
so why not try to write one? I'm going to fail anyway (according
to most people here) so why not try? No harm, since it'll fail
anyway, I'm just trying to prove to myself that what they say is

NOT looking to write a better virus checker, just to see if it

to hurt my brother with nerf bricks, and proceeds to throw nerf
bricks at his brother. It's "impossible", so what's the harm?

I'll agree with the loser status of people who continually pick
on what is already known and acknowledged to be possible... The
first Melissa writer is the person I'm trying to describe, not
the 783 person to COPY Melissa FOR the purpose of releasing it.

(I'm excluding again, people who decide to rip apart Melissa
and run it themselves, to see what would happen. 783 or otherwise)

Big...terabytes. Depends on your fs block size.

Unfortunately 2Gigs. 2^31 bytes which is unsigned long
on a Pentium. Two words could be used giving 2^63 bytes
but it means a substantial slowdown doing the cross-multiplies
 of the mantissas (mantissae ???).

I regularly create files over 10GB on workstations, but this
obviously isn't on linux with ext2. I remember reading about
a Reiser filesystem that used a fat tree as its basis and could
create much larger files than 2GB. There was an alpha status
module for 2.0.X kernels , but I can't find the web address now.

It's been a while since I played with PC hardware, but I believe printer
port 1 is addressed as 0x378 and port 2 as 0x278. I'm not sure about
interrupts because Linux deals with them at a higher level - that is irq
7 may not be attributable to the hw interrupt 7.

Using RH6.0, I use "modprobe ppa" instead of "insmod ppa" (which worked
fine on 5.2), then "mount -t /dev/sd4 /mnt/zip".
However, I have not had a printer connected to the through port on the
zip - so I don't know if that'll work. The append line below would seem
to tell the os to use the ppa module to control devices connected to the
second parallel port? If this is what you want, then, assuming the
command is in the lilo.conf file, you must remember to run lilo to get
the command accepted.

HI,

In the /home-directory I'd like to have two subdirectories : www and
cgi-bin for each user.

What I want to configure is that every user can run his own cgi/perl -
scripts in his cgi-bin directory.

For a user request like ~user and his www(html-page) it works, but how
to do it with cgi-bin.

I guess it must have something to do with ScriptAlias(Match) and the
access permisions, 'cause every time I want to execute a script I get
the message : permision denied.

TIA,

Ralf

Set the "sticky" bit on the directory ("chmod +t acct"). Once that is
done files can be deleted only by the owner of the file or the owner of
the directory (or root, of course). That's how the publically writable
/tmp and /var/tmp directories are set up. There is a minor problem that
anyone with write permission in the directory can make a hard link to
someone else's file and will then be unable to remove that link. You'll
just have to live with that.

But that wasn't the question, and I maintain that with a properly

have to know the semantic structure of the documents - and the phone

Yes. And I got my printer working finally.

Turns out, if I load as modules (I am using modules)
parport.o and parport_pc.o in that order, before a
write to a printer device happens evverything works!
But if I load parport.o and write to a printer port
(which will fail of coarse), then lif I oad parport_pc.o
the printer continues to fail.

To summarize, the driver/modules needs to be pre-loaded
in a proper sequence.

According to the man page of init, when the runlevel is changed, all

/etc/rc.d/rc is executed with a runlevel as argument. The 'K-' and
'S-scripts' are execute from the appriopriate rc-directory. Now I don't
see why the 'K-scripts' should be executed as init already sent a SIGTERM
and SIGKILL to all undefined processes in the new level. (I must say that
I don't know which processes qualify for 'undefined', so answering that
may solve my problem too.)

Try modprobe lp. it should load all the modules it depends on first, and if
you set up the alias right it will all be loaded the right way. you will of
course need to run depmod-a sometime for this to work.

Hi guys!

I am shure that someone has already face the problem like this. I installed
RedHat 5.2 from CD, then recompiled the kernel. New kernel boots, but
doesn't
want to mount root filesystem. Error message looks like:
VFS: Cannot open root device 03:01
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
03:01 are numbers of device hda1, major and minor.
In the same time, the original kernel, which come with the distributive,
boots normally, mounts all needed and works. Maybe it's because of LILO
misconfiguration (LILO is installed in the MBR) or because of the large size
of my hard disk (more than 1024 cylinders, but /dev/hda1 fits in 1st 1024),
i don't know. If someone know how to cope with it, answer please.

Alexander

It is not something you switch on. The pam method is compiled into the
login program and other programs that needs to validate user passwords
such as the ftp, telnet, pop3, and other daemons. If you install nopn-pam
versions of these programs you don't have pam.

Hi,

Is there any way to get the /dev/dsp output ?

I would like to use another output than /dev/dsp to listen realaudio
(this to redirect the output to a NAS (Network Audio System) server).

Or is there a way to store a realaudio stream and convert or play with
something else than realaudio with linux ?

Thank you.

Philippe.

Hi Ralf,

Check the permission of cgi-bin directory itself, and you can turn it to
appropriate status.

When you use this tape with TAR......do you reference it as /dev/ht0

I've just got some problems with mine and was not sure about this.

Could it be you forgot to include IDE support in your new kernel?

Since your kernel boots, I guess there's nothing wrong with Lilo, but I'm
no expert so I could be wrong...
