How would you know, you never got it installed? BTW, whats this got to

Well you got the bullshit part right anyway. In sys.op.be.misc you
posted that your system has ali 1521 logic chips and a mach64 based
video card. Neither of these are on the Be supported hardware list. If
you had checked this list, as Be recommends that you do, you would have
know this. Your system is more like 0% compatible, its a RFM issue.

Actually it is a very comprehensive book, I defy you to find a more
complete book for Linux or Win9x. What info where you not able to find?
Was it your problems installing? I believe the book refers you to the
support list on the web. Considering your problems with the BeOS support
list perhaps its a reading skills problem. What flames at the expense of
Linux? He does make digs at "other operating systems", but I think they
are aimed mainly at Windows and to a lesser degree Mac's OS. Over all
though I would agree that he goes overboard on the evangelism.
Sorry, to add to this off topic thread, but I read his post in the Be
group and know that his problems are of his own makeing, so I wanted to
straighten the record out.

Hello everybody.
When I fire up Netscape 4.6 and try to access a site on the Net (with a live
connection) I get a message that home.netscape.com,home6.netscape.com,
internic .net servers were not found and that some variables in the
$Socks-NS environment may need changing. Could somebody possibly help me
with that?
Also will netscape messenger work straight off once I set up my providers
pop addresses etc or will it need further tweaking?
I have suse 6.1 2.2.5 kernel
Thanking in advance,

Have a look at this URL:
http://www.suse.de/sdb/en/html/me_kde_kein_ton.html
(You have to edit the file /opt/kde/bin/startkde and remove the
#-characters
from the lines
# startifthere kaudioserver
# startifthere kwmsound
Be careful: kaudioserver produces system crashes or hangs in some
situations!
So it's at your own risk (although it works fine on my machine).)

Have you tried disabling Java in the preferences?
Are you getting any messages from it? Run it from the command line,
or check the ~/.xsession-errors file. It could be a mismatched .jar
file. Sometimes if you have a CLASSPATH defined it can mess up the
Navigator JVM. Mine usually doen't die tho', just can't start java.
You can also add the java40.jar file in the netscape/java/classes
directory onto your classpath, but this could cause some problems with
standalone Java apps.
Some things to try, anyways.

I am using .59r with a Sound Blaster Live.
Decoding without a buffer works fine (without other system activity).
Decoding with any buffer (-b) causes crackling output.
Anyone have simillar results?

I don't know :-) My CD player doesn't have a headphone socket in
the front panel (or anywhere else). It's shocking, but that's
how it is.
My speakers are connected thru the sound card. The card I have is
an ENSONIQ PCI audio card. I hope it isn't one of the "unsupported"
cards. I looked in SuSE's compatibility list(s), but I don't
remember now (it's been a while) if this one is unsupported or not.
I think I'll check the list again...
Thanks for the help. Any more ideas as to what I can try?

Before delving into the kernel's innermost code, you should have taken a
look at www.kernelnotes.org or any one of the linux news sites. There
you would have learned that most FS's were broken from 2.3.6 onwards due
to massive changes in the buffer code.
This is nothing that could be trivially fixed and there are others
working on that, so don't do it - at least not on your own. If you know
what you are doing, you can present yourself as interested in it on the
linux-*fs* mailing lists.

There are tons of people reporting fs crashes on 2.2.9 and 2.2.10 (2.2.8
anyway). Mostly they cannot be reproduced by the kernel hacker guild,
but it is not ruled out jet that the be all due to hw problems
(overclocking, bad mem, etc), see

Agreed.
My humor in the patch kit was an attempt to distract
the motely lot from another round of, "Jesus, you really
are an asshole."
The last 20 or so messages in the thread only went
in that direction and refused to address the subject
of the thread. Note, I'm still tagging that thread
here, but only in a response to this message.
I've always appreciated your work, efforts and comments.
I don't always agree, sometimes I say, "gee that mind fart
isn't it.", but as you'll note personal verb bouts between
yourself and myself haven't taken place in years.
As for the patchkit itself, I expect it will one day
spawn a book or at the very least a chapter in someones
book. This, of course, noting it was a marvelous
adhoc, inventive approach that spawn other innovaction(sp?).
In the same breath you're likely to hear, "of which it
became a despised comial rendition of Keystone Cops
in software."
Mind you, I'm not wacking Nate, Rodney, Jordan, et al.
this is just the way things turned out.
Responding to the "Jolitz" themselves, I understood
their response and lack of silence (or lack at times),
but was upset when they refused to release the reigns(sp?).
One day, Bill and Lynn will understand they are not
good managers, politicians or leaders. They are
great software writers!

similar to
other Unix flavors. The commands are basically the same, as you state, and the
differences minimal.

Add anonymous, and or ftp, to /etc/ftpd.rest to have the ftpd treat the
anonymous login as restricted. Ftpd will chroot ~ftp making the home
directory seem like '/'. Then you create etc, bin, and pub
subdirectories in ~ftp. Make ~ftp and ~ftp/etc and ~ftp/bin not
writable by anyone. In bin place any commands the user will be allowed
to execute, like cd, ls, pwd, etc. To eliminate ls listings without
warning you can place a script named 'ls' in the bin which does nothing.

Linux will always give you the choice to GUI or not to GUI.
Even if you want GUI, you can roll your own GUI with WindowsMaker and
so on. But underneath the GUI. Everything is still the same.

Hi,
Are there man pages for standard classes in C++ (like iostream) and the
STL classes?
I know there are such man pages on other unices (I used them on SGI),
and would really like to have it on Linux too.
Thanks in advance,
Ilan
