Subject: IMAP 4.5 w/Maildir -> Can't Efficiently Handle Big Maildirs (>4096)?
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 01:26:16 -0800
I'm running a Linux box as my mail server running qmail and a patched
version of the IMAP 4.5 server that supports Maildirs. I have a lot of mail:
my Maildir has 5086 messages in it to be precise. Recently (i.e., in the
last 500 messages or so) retreiving mail has become *painfully* slow.
Looking at "top," I find that imapd is choking the CPU, taking 97% of the
CPU just to open a mail message. Huh? Wasn't a Maildir supposed to solve
this? Or is this a fundamental filesysem problem? What might be going on? (I
have plenty of memory and imapd is only using 2Mb -- it's not a swapping
issue.)
Respectfully Submitted,

If you have a properly installed 'g++' you may try giving the command
'info g++' on the command line. Otherwise, try taking a look at the GNU
site at <URL:http://www.gnu.org/>. The GCC home page is at
<URL:http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html>.

The directory that holds your file 'index.html' must be world executable
and readable. The file itself must be world readable.

Are you surprised? You're using a beta version of RealPlayer on an
GNU/Linux system *based* on the unstable Debian GNU/Linux system...
Try removing RealPlayer.

You can d/l it from almost any site that hosts a linux distribution, GCC is
a C compiler it will also compile C++ and a few other languages aswell I
think.

Put like that, yeah. OTOH how long does it take you to sudo emacs
/etc/hosts, or sudo vim /etc/hosts ?
And more to the point, would you trust something with the programmability
of (X)emacs running as root? How do emacs fans do things like the above,
which are quite often nippy little tasks?

There's also Xess(lite) and Siag. Xess handles Excel okay, never really

yes I'v done that, but installation reqiures CC environment variable, I
have no-where to point this to, since I do nor appear
to hav any C compiler on my machine,
has linux installation gone wrong ie. should there be some kind of C
compiler installed initially ?
am I looking for the wrong thing ?
do I need to download c-compiler binaries instead, from somewhere?
or is system generally confused, the install is not able to determine HOST
or TARGET, I have noticed this when trying to install other s/ware
mandrake linux does not seem to be one of the standard linux systems ?
help is VERY much appreciated

You're right, make that MB's instead of GB's. Still, I wouldn't use
MySQL as a serious database for a highly stressed e-commerce site. No
transaction logs, rollback, loadbalancing etc.

Hi out there.
I have this setting.
Two PCs in a TCP/IP Ethernet LAN.
One of them a Pentium 90 with Linux and #IP 192.168.100.100.
The second with Win98, CProxy, an ADSL netcard that is permanent
conected to internet with a permanent #IP. And of course an ethernet netcard
with #IP 192.168.100.101.
I try to use the Win98 as a gateway for the Linux or use the ping
command with internet #IPs and the DNS of my ISP but I haven't managed to
work it out.
Can anyone help me?

Configure your card normally, and then modify the X configuration
file (XF64Config). In your Device section try:
Option "no_bitblt"
If still doesn't work, try:
Option "noaccel"
The first one works in my SiS card, with XFree86 3.3.5.
Good luck,

FYI only ( < Stevens UNIX Network Programming, Pg 181 )
Packets are Network Layer artifacts.
Frames are Data Link Layer artifacts.
Bits are Physical Layer artifacts.
The DL layer breaks packets down into frames and checksums each frame.
If the checksum doesn't match when a frame arrives at its destination
an error may be reported such as the one you got. Other things happen
but you weren't asking about that really.
Tanenbaum explains it in his "Computer Networks" book ( Pg 179 )
As far as the advice given, its like the previous responder says,
beat on the telco.

Emacs is simply the MS of Unix - the line between OS and app is totally
blurred. And everything is fine as long as you do everything their way.
Which is fine, ... for most people.
But not for hackers/Chinese restaurant types - who like to pick and choose
their tools.
