'course, Einstein also refused to believe in quantum theory, that's where the

Nope. That kills the currently running process. init then discovers that
it is dead and starts another verion of that process. If you do this
rapidly and a number of times, init will assume taht something is wrong,
and not restart the process again for 5 min or so, but then it tries
again. So you should not be able to permanantly kill mingetty, unless of
course you remove the mingetty entries from /etc/inittab as well.

Sorry, why should you expect anything else. YOu are logged on as root.
root is root, whether it came from a floppy or not (actually how would
the computer know where the OS came from).
So, yes, if you have access to the machine, then the machine is very
insecure.

If I understand correctly, you are saying that your BIOS has a setting
that allows you to play around with the logical ordering of the IDE
drives at the boot configuration screen. During the install Windows
is on a partition of /dev/hda and you put the Linux root on a
partition of /dev/hdb. You reboot the machine, the BIOS waves a magic
wand, and the Windows and Linux drives switch names.
If the above is incorrect, nothing below will be applicable.
What you are trying to do will cause confusion with no end. If you
want the drive with the Linux root on it to be a partition of /dev/hda
when Linux is running, then it should also be on /dev/hda during the
install. On the other hand, unlike Windows, Linux is perfectly happy
to use a partition of /dev/hdb as its root, so why not install on
/dev/hdb and run from /dev/hdb. Note, however, that during boot your
machine will still look at the MBR of /dev/hda or the floppy disk, so
you will need to install LILO on /dev/hda (with options to boot either
Windows or Linux from the appropriate partitions) or install LILO on a
floppy and use this to boot Linux.

You might be suprised with X-Windows just how far you could go teaching computer
illiterate people. All you need to do is teach them how to logon to a Linux
console (ie username & password) and then edit all the scripts to start the X
window system automatically (if you are using the bash shell, find the
.bash_profile files in each users home directory and add the command "startx" to
the file in the specified place. The other option is to switch the runlevel on
the Linux computer from 3 to 5. This will give each user a X Windows login
prompt and automatically take them to X, plus you still have your first six
consoles free because X runs on the 7th.
As far as a mail server, I would go with POP3. You can either use the RPM one
on the RH6 CD or go download and compile another free one called QPopper from
www.linuxberg.com. I haven't tried the one on the RH6 CD, but I currently use
QPopper at home and plan on setting it up as a mail server at my school.

Which costs much more. Even the blank CDRom is worth about $1, and your
CDRom writer will wear out faster , and your time is probably worth at
least minimum wage, in which case the above has cost far far more than

I use cdrecord -v -speed=2 dev=0,0,0 blank=all
Use a cdrecord -scanbus to make sure the dev is 0
I also have been able to master my own CD's and I can re-mount them
under Linux. Its been great for Linux but my cd's do not work under
Windows NT.
None of the CD's I create under Linux work on NT. I tried all kinds of
things such as mkisofs with Juliet, rock ridge, etc... I tried xcdroast
and used the nice gui to select Windows NT/95... I even compiled
mkhybrid and created an image for NT.
No matter what file system is on the CD it is ignored by my NT 40x
CD-ROM drive. It works great on my Linux 40x CD-ROM drive under Mandrake
6.0 with a new Kernel.
SOMEONE HELP!! I have spent four weeks on this and countless CD-R's.
p.s. I found that if I use a CD-RW I don't waste as many CD's :)

You're not trying to mount the boot floppy, or an unformatted floppy, are you? That
doesn't have a file system on it.
Nor are you trying to mount an audio cd, are you? That's not iso9660.
Also, if the floppy was formatted for dos, you should use
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
where /dev/cdrom points to the cdrom drive (/dev/hdb or /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd).
