I think you have to be a bit more precise here.
Linux has *some* support already for IPV6, and I'm not sure what "new types
of programs" you're referring to.

There hasn't been any evidence thus far to indicate that the Hurd project
was ever intended to represent a user interface project. It is, and always
has been, a project to provide an OS *kernel* intended as an
alternative/replacement for UNIX.
If your interest lies in graphical user interfaces, then you should consider
looking at:
a) GNUstep
b) XFree86
c) Mesa
d) GNOME
e) Berlin
all of which have some degree of intent to provide the ability to use those
"fancy 3D graphics cards."
The last published report on X-and-Hurd was on June 12th, when Marcus
Brinkmann indicated on the Debian/Hurd mailing list that:
"The libraries work, the clients work, the servers don't work. What else
can I say?"
The servers don't work, which means that a fancy graphics card on Hurd
is, at this point, useless, as it has no ability to harness it.

Hurd may, in the long run, allow the ability to make further services that
"look as if they are part of the OS," providing something more powerful than
mere dynamic libraries.
Adding in the ability to process XML does not require Hurd; my system
already has /usr/lib/libxml.so.0, which allows applications the ability to
process XML.

Development of Hurd started not far from 1991.

I am trying to recover from an upgrade from rh4.1 to rh6.0. I have got
everything fixed (I think) except for printing. I have an old apsfilter
print filter that doesn't work. (There is a program somewhere named
rewindstdin which cannot be executed.) As I understand it apsfilter is
now orphaned so I guess it's time for me to move on from it. I tried to
install rhs-printfilter from the rh6.0 cd but I got an error message
about libgr-progs <2.0.9.7> conflicting with rhs-printfilter.. .
I am pretty well outside my conform zone by now and I would appreciate
any advice available.

Hello,
I checked a RPM package I had just installed. That package was
Net-tools 1.51-1. I got a return telling me they're were permission
problems on three or four files present in the /bin directory..
All of them are symbolic links. As I have discovered and as it was
confirmed to me on IRC, it is not possible to use chmod to change the
permissions on symbolic links.
So how can I solve the problem ?
Thanks in advance for your help,

My ISP uses CHAP so I don't get those cues, but if I remember right, you
will get them if you use minicom. You do minicom and then type in
ATDTphonenumber where phonenumber is the obvious. Then it will make all
it's noises and it should give you a cue like ogin or whatever. then
perhaps a line or so and another. You write down what it says and use
that. And for each line it skips you put in /n. I think that's how it
works. I mean that's what you put in the script.
Now if you want to complete the connection using minicom, you do Ctrl A,
Q and yes. Then you type pppd. Or if you want to cancel you do Ctrl A,
X and yes. This resets the modem.
Better look this over to see if I got it right.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just ran across your posting on
Deja.com.
I got the same problem trying to compile php-3.0.10 and
mod_fastcgi-2.2.2.
I couldn't find any solution on the net, either, so here is what I
finally found out:
Somehow the apache-make misses to put the linker flags _including the
filename for the linker_ into apxs (it's a small perl script). The
compiler parameters are there ok, but anything regarding linking is
missing. That means apxs tries to call the linker as ''.
So open /your/apache/path/bin/apxs in your favourite text editor and
look for the lines saying
my $CFG_CFLAGS_SHLIB = ''; # substituted via Makefile.tmpl
my $CFG_LD_SHLIB = ''; # substituted via Makefile.tmpl
my $CFG_LDFLAGS_SHLIB = ''; # substituted via Makefile.tmpl
my $CFG_LIBS_SHLIB = ''; # substituted via Makefile.tmpl
Put in the values you can find in /your/apache/source/tree/src/Makefile
(look for the same variable names without the CFG_ prefix).
After that you'll be able to link successfully using apxs.
If you deleted your configured apache sources here are the values that
work for me (linux 2.2.10, glibc-2.0.7, egcs-2.91.66, apache-1.3.6):
my $CFG_CFLAGS_SHLIB = ' -fpic -DSHARED_MODULE';
my $CFG_LD_SHLIB = 'ld';
my $CFG_LDFLAGS_SHLIB = ' -Bshareable';
my $CFG_LIBS_SHLIB = '';
cu,
Carsten
PS: I couldn't find this mentioned on www.apache.org or bugs.apache.org.
Is this a known problem? It says "# substituted via Makefile.tmpl"
in the apxs source, so it should happen automatically?

First, some clarification... If you are stating that it takes 1 hour to backup
10 GB of data when the DLT drive is directly connected to the SCSI interface of
the workstation/server and takes 3 hours to backup 10 GB of data on a remote, ie.
the tape drive is not directly connected, workstation/server, then you most
probably cannot speed-up the remote backup. The SCSI interface operates at a
significantly higher speed than the network interface; for example, 100MBps
versus 100Mbps (MBps = megabytes per second, Mbps = megabits per second, 1 byte =
8 bits). Hopefully this will clear up any confusion you may be experiencing
regarding the speed difference.

Too bad that does not work with mounting my cp/m-86 partitions.
only my drdos 7.02 ones. Does anyone have a cp/m-86 file system for linux?
I am using Personal CP/M86 ver 1.1. it is located on my /dev/sdb2

BTW I can boot CP/M86 from lilo or dos or linux. only I would love
to be capable of moving files directly from linux to the cp/m86

PLEASE support Corel - they're chucking a lot of resources at Wine.
Okay, the contractors' brief is to port Corel's software and get it

All we need now is for WordPerfect to go "this product comes with

And where's the problem with taking the source and recompiling an

(the standard C library, POSIX/BSD stuff), it'll run on the Hurd just as
well as on Linux.

the stability of the Hurd.

They've done that for 16 years now. Some guys got together in a group
they called the FSF and wrote programs for an obscure operating system
called GNU. And all those programs used standard facilities provided by
any self-respecting Unix, so they are completely unportable, too.
Or do you mean *only* deployable on the Hurd because they use special
kernel features found nowhere else? I've never done low-level
programming, but it seems that we have libraries so we don't have to
worry about things pertaining to the kernel.

Subject: RH6.0 vs. tik-0.73 -- Linux lockup
Date: 4 Jul 1999 22:12:15 GMT
I have just installed RH6.0 from scratch (I was outgrowing the /usr from 5.0,
5.1, and 5.2). I have everything up to speed except tik.
If I invoke tik when there is a buddy logged onto AIM, or a buddy logs into AIM
while tik has only me listed -- Linux locks up, hard. I can't
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-F2, or get into the box via telnet. Also, my
computer's speaker is humming loudly. What a surprise. It's the first time I
have had Linux lockup without cause since I started using it 14 months ago.
I have tested this with kernel-2.2.5-22, -2.2.5-24(RawHide), and a compiled
2.2.5-22. RH5.2 has no problem. RH6.0 does. I had everything running under
RH5.2 for several months, including the 2.2.5 kernel, no problems.

I am running OSS sound. Have been since 2.0.32. I have had no problems with
that.
Any ideas?

This is a library problem, as newer linux'ies use libc6 (also
known as glibc).
I remeber this being reported a few times on the GAP forum,
but I haven't kept the relevant postings...
You can either try searching GAP-forum archive on
www-gap.cs.st-and.ac.uk,
or subscribe to GAP-forum and post your question there.
Meanwhile, I'd forward your message to GAP forum (hope
you don't mind.)
