Cable modems don't connect directly into your computer. They connect through
RJ-45 cord to an ethernet card which you either own or buy from the company that
you buy the cable service from. You have to make sure that you have a compatible
ethernet card - which, for Linux, is probably th most widely supported piece of
hardware - the cable modem itself is O/S independant. You may have to worry about
some providers which use proopritary windows software to authenticate its users -
I know road-runner does this - make sure you ask. There is a fix, however, for
RoadRunner, but I don't know about any others.

When I installed Mandrake 6.0 on my PPro 180, it installed an SMP kernel by
default, but I only have one CPU and it caused my system to hang on boot up.
I reinstalled, choosing [*]select individual packages, during the installation.
Then I had to find the SMP kernel in the menu, and de-select it. It booted up
fine after that.

C++ is not a visual programming language.
BASIC is not a visual programming language.

Is this QT tool a visual programming language in and of itself?

If so, then I'd be interested in hearing its name, which probably should
be added to the list of visual programming languages.

If not, then this is merely another attempt on the part of the witless
cattle to follow Microsoft in lying to people by calling something
"Visual" in order to get them to *think* they're getting something visual
when they're not.

As far as I can tell, there are *no* visual programming languages
available for Linux, and I've seen no evidence to indicate otherwise.
The existence of "IDEs" does not represent evidence, as IDEs are not
visual programming languages.

I know Linux isn't affected by viruses, but I'm trying to find an
explanation for this. I'm writing a tutorial page, and this is one of

can point me to an explanation on the web, it is greatly appreciated.

Its attitude like this that is going to cost Linux
very heavily and i'am sure u had nothing to do with the
  spread of knowledge of Unix/Linux.
Keep it to urself maybe some day u'll actually do
  some-thing usefull.

I am using redhat 6.0 with kernel 2.2.9.

I am looking for a user friendly e-mail program. Something like kmail.

Then something about compiling. Is it possible to speed it up? I am using a
486dx4-100, with 32mb of RAM and a 4mb S3 Virge DX videocard.

In windows I have a resolution of 800x600, but in Linux I can only have
640x480. How can I change that? I
changed the resolutionto 800x600, but then X refuses to start (I get an
error...). How is this possible? What to do?

Thank you for your help. It didn't work. Anyway I removed
almost all the entries in passwd and shadow and started
creating from scratch. There must have been a non-readable

Hello,

I use RedHat 6.0 with kernel 2.2.9.

Besides Linux I make use of windows95. I have installed it 2 times. One I
want to keep clean and one I use for testing software. How can I configure
Linux (LILO) to make it possible to switch between the 2 installations of
windows 95? Just adding both in /etc/lilo.conf doesn't work. I have to
change the active partition first before it is possible for LILO to boot
that partition. I hope I am clear.

If your're in luck they are using something like com21. They are
connected to an ethernetcard.

A previous thread got me thinking about this one. Is there any way with
fetchmail (or whatever) to do a keep/nokeep based upon individual
messages by message id? In other words, if I leave messages on a server,
but want to delete one of them (and just that one) is there any way to do
this under Linux? In Windows, Eudora and Calypso can do this, for
instance.

Well cable modems are a NIC (Network Interface Card) and a external
router box.
What service is the cable system useing? @home if so all you have to
worry about is the NIC
if linux and OS/2 will see it. But i am sure they will.
There is good suport for the cards in both.

Durring configuration the system asks you if you want to allow users to
bring the interface up and down.
Behind-the-scenes, what happens is the file
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 gets edited thusly:

USERCTL=yes

Then, when you run ifup as anything other than root, this piece of the
script invokes /usr/sbin/usernetctl to bring the interface up:

if [ $UID != 0 ]; then
    if [ -x /usr/sbin/usernetctl ]; then
        exec /usr/sbin/usernetctl $CONFIG up
    fi
echo "Users cannot control this device." >&2
    exit 1
fi

So,
In short, either re-run the configuration tool ( netcfg ? ) or edit
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 to set USERCTL=yes.
