Hi,
I'm trying to install RH 6.0 on my Compaq Presario beside Win 98.
After partitioning my HDD, I started the installation by from a boot
disc, with failure.
When trying to install from E:\DOSUTILS\autoboot.bat
I get the message "Warning! Not enough free memory(load buffer size)"
Can anybody help me with this?
Thanks!

~/.xinitrc - try sticking 'exec fvwm2' or another window manager in there. You
can do KDE + gnome if you want (it gets confusing on the desktop layer!) with
X&
startkde&
gnome-session&
from the commandline (crude but it works - I had it going automatically by
putting gnome-session in the autostart directory in KDE once).

Subject: Sound problems
Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 21:14:35 +0100
Hi,
I have recently installed RH6. I have a few questions regarding sound:
1. - I can get sound out of winamp but not a CD. Any ideas?
2. - when I try to use the EDS Volume Meter, in the Multimedia group
(I'm running Gnome) I get an error box - "Cannot connect to sound daemon.
Please run 'esd' at a command prompt.". After starting eds a
volume meter
pops up, but it doesn't respond to any mouse
clicks. And now even x11amp won't make any sound.
I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how to set up sound
correctly, or point me to a document that will. I'm
using an AWE64 soundcard, which definitely produces music
from x11amp usually. But it's not very loud, so I need a volume.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kev.

Yes, using the standard XF86_SVGA driver,
with XF86Config.TNT2 as posted recently on a Linux newsgroup.
(Alternatively, you can get an X driver from http://www.nvidia.com
which would probably be better.)

The last time I tried Red Hat was 5.1. There were enough things
different from normal Linux, and their phone support was useless,
that I gave up on them. 6.0 might be a lot better.
Debian has treated me very well. Almost everything works right
out of the package, and when I install large sources like BIND
they work, because Debian is normal Linux. If they get their
documentation together it will be the best OS available for PCs.
But all Linux distributions have that problem. *Nobody* is doing
serious end-user usability testing yet AFAICT.

Hi all. I have 128mb of RAM and 128mb of swap but Linux start using the swap
when I'm using only 32mb (total). It's just an example. It occured after
the updatedb and seems to be a recent change. I used the kernel 2.0.35 for a
long time and it rarely entered the swap.
After this updatedb it was using 620K of swap. Now, after 10 minutes it's
using only 340. I really don't know why it's using the swap if I was using
1/4 of my ram at the updatedb.

If you install another gnome compliant window manager like window maker or
something else, it should show up in your window manager capplet and allow
you to switch. I like window maker once some appicons are gotten rid of.

Hi!
experimentellen Stadium. Die ganz normale Anwendung von lilo
geht aber damit - jedenfalls hier. Wer auch damit herumprobieren mchte,

I had exactly the same problem:
2 hdd : 1st win 2nd linux, and I tried to install lilo on 2nd(/dev/hdc) so
it can boot both, by changing bios boot sequence to "D,.."
It didn't work for me. I ended up physically switching the drives.
Now when lilo and linux are on /dev/hda it's fine.
I got an impression (by reading lilo docs) that it's incabable
of being the primary boot loader if installed somewhere other than 1st hdd
(or floppy), no matter what is the bios boot sequence.
If you finally make it work your way and boot from secondary drive,
let me know.
Cheers

That might be a good idea. You would also have to lock the memory
region intended for such purposes to prevent it from being swapped out,
even temporarily. Users aren't supposed to get to such, but you never
know.

I guess if your printer is duplex capable, then it also has postscript.
In that case you should try to get your hands on a ppd (postscript
