Hi,
I run a linux (RH5.2) IP-Masq router at home, with a cable modem connected
to it.
My ISP allows a maximum of 300MB download a day. I already got several
warning messages telling me that they are going to end my contract if i
continue to overpass this amount, but this is reached quickly without even
having an idea...)
I've tried using packet sniffer's etc, but it's to much hassle.
Is there a way of having the router send a warning message (issue command
that sends winpopup messages) at 250MB of RX traffic, and shutdown an eth
interface automatically when it has reached 300MB of RX traffic ???
I am sure that this is possible with some sort of script ran in
cron.minuteley that checks the incomming traffic reached, and takes actions
using commands when at 250 or 300MB. (ifconfig shows only packets, not bytes
?????)
+ I am not good at writing complex shell scripts like this.
Can anyone advise me on a way to do this task ??? (or better, can anyone
write such a script for me PLEAAAASSSEEE !!!:)
Awaiting your response eagerly,
Terrence Vergauwen

If you are using tcsh put the following in .tcshrc:
alias ls ls-F
set color=ls-F
optionally you can define colors yourself:
setenv LS_COLORS 'di=1' # directories
see the tcsh man for details

I still rember vividly when my dad brought home the old atari 800! Man
what a great machine. I was only knee high to a grasshopper at the time,
and belive me, I was devistated when he gave it and all the assoirted
atari stuff away. I still rember booting games off audio tape...
playing star raiders, and the old atari word processor. Final count I
remeber 2 diskdrives, a tape drive, a touch pad, 4 joysticks, an old
daisywheel printer, a modem(IIRC), a wide variety of software, both
disks and cratridges ectera. And don't forget M.U.L.E. the best game
ever written to date. There are some atari emulators floating around
and a good number of programs as well. Somewhere theres a trick for
reading atari disks on pc diskdrives to rip the images... oh di I

Oy. Wrong "evidence" to use. NT also beats solaris
for "dynamic" pages done in a different test, although solaris + SWS was
the hands-down winner for static page delivery.

Slackware has glibc2 runtime support, but that's not an issue, since the
problems are related to libstdc++, and not to libc. My experience is
that RP-G2 doesn't work with any other version of libstdc++ other than
2.8.0-14.
Otherwise, the only problem I have is - it starts when I click on a .ram
file, but it doesn't begin to play it, so after it's up I have to copy
the file location and paste it in RP; then it will play it.

I have a Toshiba laptop with the same soundcard. Here is how I fixed this:
1) Run the sndconfig program. This will walk you through the install. Select
your sound card type. When it runs the sound test, you will not here the wave
sounds but say yes when it asks.
2) Edit the module.conf file to mach the settings in your bios. For some
reason, Linux does not set the wave property correctly.
3) Reboot and everything should be working.
Note: Wave files on my laptop play extremely quietly so you may have to turn up
the sound.

I tried to set up the soundcard the way they said but then I ran the sndconfig
and tried to run it with the sb 16 emulation but that didn't work and screwed up
a bunch of stuff so I reinstalled linux because I was afraid I totally screwed
it up so I tried running the install again and I got that message when I tried

If you can stand the money, sshd _might_ do what you're looking for.
You'd have to get your customers to set up the keys, but once the keys
are set up, there need not be any login at all. You just connect. sshd
compares keys, and if they match, you're in.
The only problem is getting your customers to generate the keys (you
could possibly do it for them, then give them an install script).
The advantage is that it's pretty secure (a lot more than telnet).
The disadvantage is that it is commercial, and costs $100 per client.

Usual German pronounciation is Leenooks, though I think I recall
having heard Lynooks, too.
Since this thread is obviously OT, I thought I'd take the opportunity
to ask how you pronounce the names of other Unices (or is it Unixes).
Irix: Eye Rix, Irrix or even Iris (is it named after some special
girl?)
HP-UX: eytsh pee ucks ??
Solaris: Solaahris or Solerris (and which syllable to pronounce)
Xenix (does this one still exist?): Zee Nix or Zennix
what other variants are there (besides Minix, whose pronounciation
seems unambiguous)? Please don't tell me to subscribe to all the
proper newsgroups. I'm not THAT hungry for Unix trivia. MSB

Have I missed it or has nobody mentioned what I think is the most
important difference between the microkernel and monolithic kernel
approach: Maintainability.
It's really hard to become a Linux driver programmer. As I perceive it
you have to dig your way through too much code you don't really need
to see and mess with too many things you better not mess with. I think
I recall having read on one of the GNU pages that for the Hurd you
would be able to develop a new filesystem in user mode, without even
having to look at the kernel sources.
So I believe a microkernel architecture is more suitable for an open
source system because it allows more people to get into driver
programming. MSB

Another thought about physical access. It's not only the computer(s)
you have to protect. It's the network wiring, too. AFAIK, someone can
just plug out a computer and insert a laptop instead, set up to use
the same IP address, UIDs etc.Depending on how restrictive you are
within the LAN, a root login on that laptop could allow free access to
all the other computers in the LAN. MSB

I should clarify. I was mistaken. I can exit X using
Ctrl-alt-backspace, however, once I do all I get is a blank screen. NO
login prompt appears. I cannot switch to a virtual terminal.
This has happened twice in two weeks.
More info. RedHat Linux 5.1, 233Mhz, 64MB RAM, usually happens when
quitting without prompt a pine session in an Xterm, Eterm, etc.
Pine-4.10-1.i386.rpm from contrib. No messages in /var/log/messages
that would explain the broken authentication. Using
mingetty-0.9.4-7.i386.rpm as the getty process.

There is a program out there called mpeg2encode. I don't remember
offhand where you find it on the net but a search engine should probably
help. I used it to convert a short segment from a video tape to mpeg.
I couldn't get the sound part to work. I got the raw data using the
bttv video driver so if you were going from TIFF files you would probably
have to first convert them to some other format.
Hope this helps.
