This has been a long standing problem involving the
session manager. If you examine the file .xsession-errors
while gnome is in this bad state, you will most likely find
an error message about MIT MAGIC COOKIE and
authentication. It was decided that the problem had
been resolved in more recent versions of gnome-core,
but I've encountered it using the latest version (1.0.7)
available from the gnome web site. I've reposted it.
Since it apparently only happens in some circumstances,
it may be difficult to track down. So I guess we will
have to wait until it is resolved.

Try using rwall. If you want it always to be executed with
shutdown, write a script which first does rwall and then
does shutdown. You have to have the package including
rwall installed.
However, utilities like rwall can create security problems,
so think about whether or not you really want it.

You could always install in a virtual machine (www.vmware.com) and then
use

When you did instal the 5.0 version you got two things:
1) Customer Number
2) Key
Now when you are on the donbwload site, registering, bottom, you will=20
see an entry called named Customer Number.
Put this number in.
But before, you will have to enter your full name, address etc.,=20
Definitions with a sort of a red arrow on the left are mandatory.
Now, I do not know however, whether this will allow you to download=20
the 5.0 version, wbich has been replaced by 5.1.
BTW: Why do you not donwload the new version ?

Subject: Problem Installing Gimp RPM
Date: 12 Jul 1999 16:39:55 GMT
I'm running RH5.1 Linux i386. I want to install the Gimp 1.0.2-1
RPM. When I go to install glib-1.2.3-2, I get:
failed dependencies:
libglib.so.1 is needed by control-panel-3.7-4
libglib.so.1 is needed by usermode-1.4.1-4
libglib.so.1 is needed by usernet-1.0.7-4
libglib.so.1 is needed by imlib-1.6-1
Which of course causes most of the other RPM installs to fail.
Is it safe in this case to "--force" the glib-1.2.3-2 install?
TIA,
Jim

Hello,
first of all, I'm a bloody nweby to Linux and for that I start to work with
it, learning to go on Unix. So most the time, Linux is up. Whenever the
computer has nothing to do, it should do some work on the Seti@home-Project.
But it doesn't work.
I have downloaded the every version of the 386-linux versions - but every
version tells me that there is "no route to server". But all the ISDN- and
internet stuff is set up and works fine.
Has anyone an idea where I should take a look?
Thanks,

Your "problem" is that LILO is still sitting on the master boot record (MBR)
of your hard disk. For some reason windoze products have the belief that
only their boot programs can reside there...
If you have an old dos boot floppy, it might work to boot in dos from that
disk and then give the command
fdisk /mbr
This should overwrite the MBR program with Micro$oft's (old?) version, and
possibly you can continue from there.
If it works, enjoy your New Troubles!

The US government is directly responsible for at least 1/2 of the worst
most horrible things to ever occur in the last 200 years. MOST of the
human rights violations in the world are performed by our allies and the
puppet governments we put in control of the countries after elliminating
"communism".
But that has nothing to do with wether or not communism or
capitalism/democracy are better.....neither form of government has really
been thuroly tested before it got busted by powermongers. Its been
that way from the beginning of time....I don't forsee a change any time soon.

There are several generations of I3500. With different hardware inside.
You're lucky yours is fully supported. Some models use the NM2260
MagicMedia 256ZX. The last time I checked the XFCom_NeoMagic server
(from Precision Insight Inc.), it supported Neomagic chipsets up to
x0005 (NM2200); the NM2260 one is x0006 and the server will spit you
out.
That's why I wanted to warn the initial poster about the manufacturer
policy to attach the same brand name to computers with different
hardware. The simple fact that you have a fully supported I3500 doesn't
necessarily mean that the particular I3500 he/she wants to buy will be.
