You got me. I've never seen this one before. Whenever I've had a
device problem it's been because they weren't made. I made them and
everything was all right. I'm beginning to think that I made a mistake
in recompiling the kernel.
Did you use MAKEDEV? It is a little daunting unless you're pretty good
at perl but I managed to trudge my way through it. In my case I needed
to make up to hda16 and it would only go to hda8. I finally found an #
in the script after 8 and moved it to after 16 and all was well.

That's about the best summary. I'd like to thank everyone for their
useful responses. Since my Linux box is just for personal use (mostly
for writing mathematics papers and some related mathematical computations),
I was surprised that anyone would even bother. It's also not connected
to the internet very often (only via a university PPP account), and gets
an unlisted dynamically generated IP address. Thus I felt that I had
nothing to worry about (does the invisible man worry about getting
mugged?).
None of my important files were damaged, although I did find a secondary
bash_history of the hacker, which shows they attempted to format one of
my hard drives. He doesn't seem to understand unix very well (he even
tried to use the "format" command!). As that hard drive was mounted and
in use, his attempts turned out to be futile.
I did a completely fresh install with Red Hat Linux 6.0 (wonderful
distribution, GNOME/enlightenment is beautiful). It took me only a few
hours and was well worth the effort. I'm also taking the time to make
sure it's secure, now, of course!

This makes me think twice. I'm using my computer exactly the same way. Through
ppp to school.
If they hack the computer at school then no matter what you do they can break
into your computer too.

I was talking about democracy. I think its pretty much dieing in this
country...if not rigamortiszed already.
>
> Socialism only got busted due to repeated invasion by capitalist

Well in regards to Russia and China...both of which have been called
"communist", the communist like government was more like a
dictatorship...either immediately or by the appointment of a
psychopathic monster as leader (Stalin was a creap).
>
> So you have to see the situation this way:
> nations become socialist through social pressure
> nations become capitalist through invasion
I think a part of human nature feeds greed. And capitalism could I
guess succeed if the main players were not hoarding. However I think
the socialist mechanics allow for a wider dispersment of the wealth,
and possibly faster progress of ideas....not all the good ideas were
brought about because someone wanted to get rich, some were but I
think as a rule it is curiosity more then anything wich makes us
pursue the truth...least it is that with me I think.
There are plenty of people out there that don't work...which would be
more then willing to given the chance....I think capitolism ends up
causing people to get laid off because of cut backs in some business
deal all too often.
Also the US seems to look upon any non-capitolistic country as an
enemy, so in a way your probably right. But I also think maybe a good
portion of the people would rather it this way...I don't.
> social pressure is ever increasing
> tolerance for war is ever decreasing
Give me a _BREAK_....if anything the tolerance for warfare has
INCREASED in the past 2 decades. Since the 80s we have had nothing
but small wars and that little Iran Contra affair which the public
just took as normal every day activity...even labeling North, a
traitor, as a hero of the people. This decade we have had what 5+
wars? Ooohhh wait....millitary operations...we don't declair war
anymore.
I think the government has more or less learned how to play the public
oppinion though, label something as communist or facist and everyone
is ready to nuke the whole godamn country...who cares if everyone gets
killed as long as that psycho dictator terrorist is dead dead dead.
Meanwhile people are starving and dieing on the street when the money
required to make _1_ bomb would feed a man for a decade or more. Its
pretty much all ass backwards as I see it.

Can't help it, my Amiga 3000 made me a ton of money and years of
enjoyment. It was the best computer and best operating system in the
world.
The old AmigaDOS was the base of my book called "Copy Command - The
Movie" because we documented 25 ways to use the Copy command alone!
The old pipes and ARP extra's were phenominal, and now it is going
home to Linux. I can hardly wait. Is there an Amiga 7000 out there?!

Chris,
Format is also part of Solaris, but its a very different tool. Its used for
disk partitioning and low level setup. Had he been able to use it he could
have trashed your disk very badly indeed. :(
Maybe he thought he was on a Sun box, but, well, he used a linux rootkit and
should have known better. Either way, a room temprature IQ.

Recently I noticed such programs on Freshmeat...
I didn't try them...
- ACUA (140 kB)
http://acua.gist.net.au/
- Clobberd (57 kB)

I hope this helps to regulate the children... :)

Are you behind a firewall ? (Is your PC at the office ?)
Can you 'ping' any servers ? Do you use a web browser without problem ?
(From the error-message this can be a DNS problem...)

If you would run "startx -verbose -probeonly &> startxlog" and then
"less startxlog" after leaving X, you would get a look at what is
actually being put up there on your screen. It would be helpful to see
what the resolution is that is being accepted. If some modelines are
being rejected, you might be able to see why.

What is your problem with it ?
If you count : 1200 [pixel/inch] x 0.08 inch = 96 pixel,
1200 [pixel/inch] x 0.25 inch = 300 pixel,
so, the pixel numbers are very close to the 98x302 pixels !
(The difference can be from round-up values...)

You can re-install the httpd package which will restore all the
directories and subsequent permissions. Here is a dump of my /var/log
tree structure (RH6 - but little has changed between the two).
Otherwise - the other files will be recreated next reboot.

Hi,
make your Crystal Reports also on the serverside plattform and web
server independent
or
put ReportViewer javabean and report engine together in one java
application without the needing of a server
or
let client and server seperate java applications
or more...
Now i-net Crystal Clear(TM), a Java Report Engine for Seagate Crystal
Reports, is available for testing (beta-version). i-net Crystal Clear
(TM) is the solution to make reports designed with Seagate Crystal
Reports available on the serverside on all platforms and with all web
servers or without web server in a standalone application.
That is to say that now Java applications can take advantage of Seagate
Crystal Reports like Visual Basic application without the need to have
a web server.
Go to <http://www.inetsoftware.de> to see documentation or to download a
beta-version of i-net Crystal Clear.
Feel free to ask us if you have any questions about the java report

Depending on how 'xf86conig' is set up, you might try Ctrl>Alt> and the + or - key
to change resolution easily. If you select multiple resolutions during 'xconfigurator'
setup, you can switch to and from resolutions using Ctrl>Alt> then the + or - key.
