Hey Everyone :)

I'm kind of hoping someone out there can help me out with either some
tips or pointers to URLS :) I've been searching the net and as we all
know finding uptodate and proper tuning information for most Linux related
applications is pretty hard to come by.

I've been given the task of setting up squid as a caching web proxy for a
fairly large number of users. As it stands right now I've be allotted a
PII-450 with 512Meg of ram and 3 9gig scsi drives with a 100Mb nic. It's a
dual Motherboard so later if need be I can add another CPU but I doubt
that will be the first of my bottlenecks :) I'm planning to get more
drives soon so that shouldn't be the first bottleneck either.

Bascially I'm looking for pointers on everything I can do to optimize the
hell out of it. I'm planning to set noatime on the mounted drives in order
to cut down on unneeded disk IO but other than that I really don't know
what would be the best way to configure it for maximum performance.

1. Should I set the drives up as a RAID0 drive or should I leave them as
   "seperate" drives ?

2. Any special tweaks I can set in the squid config?

3. Any tweaks I should do to the kernel source ? Increase filedescriptors?

4. How do I find out just how close the proxy is getting to the fd limit
   that's there now ?

5. Anything I haven't thought of or mentioned ? :)

Downsample or PIO. IOW, can't get there from here, you'll need a SB card
that has the 16 bit dma capabilities.

But this card plays 16 bit sounds under Windows with noticable 16 bit
quality, so if Windows can do it, then it must be done somehow through the
hardware. The trick is to find out *how* it's being done.

RH is making all the noise only in the US. Because RH is a US distro,
and other US companies like Intel's and so on are backing it. And the
recent IPO increased the noise level by a zillion times louder... but
as they says :"Empty vessel makes the most noise." ;-)

RH puts out immature and underdeveloped packaging. It's much inferior
to some other distro like SuSE and Slackware. Plus RH is charging at
least 50% more than the others for an inferiour product. As with the
ingfamous Mr. Gate$ Winbloats, the price goes up while quality goes
down...

RH will sell a lot of it junk to unsuspecting newbies, but RH will
never get my support or money.

If I want expensive betaware, I'll stay with Winbloats.

Might this be an apmd problem (advanced power
management)? Maybe you should try to turn off
the power management in your BIOS and see if
the problems goes away. I had that happen
once with Linux. The problem has gone away...

does anyone know of a version of XMX that runs on the 2.2 kernel? the

Hi,
    I had a Pentium Pro 150 with 2 hard drives and a CD-ROM. I recently
installed a 13GB western digital HDD (ATA-66). I had to update my bios to be
able to see it. Even though the bios now sees the full capacity of the
drive, I had to install EZ-Drive to be able to use it.

Now, EZ-drive or ez-bios as they call it sits in MBR. If I install lilo
on the MBR, it will probably delete the "EZ-BIOS" (Am I right?). What other
options do I have? Other than to ignore Linux. My last resort is to boot
from a floppy, but I don't want to do that.

Any help.
Thank you very much.

Please post only.

You can't sue one and not the other... All Be would have to do is point
out to the LinuxPPC folks and the entire case would be thrown out. Be has
nothing to fear, and you are falling for their party line.

I have the same drive and I had a tough time getting it configed. But once
I updated my Bios I had no need to install EZ-Bios. Why did you need to install
it? Are you running a dual boot? Be specific b/c if you are not dual booting
you for sure don't need ez-bios. And I am pretty sure you can get around it
even if its dual boot.

I don't remember the exact details but I am pretty sure a westerd D
representative told me that linux and Ez-Bios would not work well together,
unless you usea boot disk.

Not strictly true -- There are some AS200 (Alpha Station 200s) on the
market 'dirt cheap' -- $345 for the base box at one place I found on
the web -- no memory, hard drive, monitor, or video board, but on-board
SCSI and sound. Has three slots: one ISA, one ISA/PCI and one PCI and
they generally come with a dual PCMCIA board in the ISA slot. Add some
true-parity (72-pin) RAM, a SCSI2 (50-pin) hard drive and CD-ROM, video
board (I've heard tell of S3/Virges at $35 each), and monitor,
keyboard, and mouse and a RH 6.0 Alpha CD, and you are golden. 233mhz
Alpha chip. And yes, there is a version of Quake for Alpha Linux.

Older Sparc boxes are also relatively cheap, if you can find them.
'Dumpster Diving' at the local university maybe?

Kevin,

Sound for the Neomagic 256AV chip is not supported under Linux, since
Neomagic has refused to release specs for the chip. (The X server for the
graphics functionality of the chip works, however.)

I downloaded a driver from <http://www.4front-tech.com/>, which has an
unsupported sound driver for the Neomagic chip. However, I was unable to get
it to work with my Sony VAIO Z505SX.

I personally use

        lynx http://www.debian.org/

which lets you use the search function at that site. You have to be
careful to download the files, though -- if you just click on them,
MIME will try to install the .deb files.

I compile QuickTimeStreamingServer in both red hat and slackware
and seem to pass w/o problem.
But when running it then seem no daemon of QuickTimeStreamingServer exist.

Any clue will be appreciated.

Thank you,

cp bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.10

cd /etc
joe lilo.conf

then you enter the needed information.

Check my lilo.conf which I include as attachment. Yours should
have some similarity. Keep in mind that I use the OS/2 boot manager
and that this lilo is on the root on the linux partition on the
third drive.

The other thing that could become a Big Deal would be if these tools
knew how to cope with CORBA IDL.

IDL is an interface form that should be particularly amenable to
diagramming tools.

Subject: question about lpr and ghostscript...
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 21:41:48 -0400

i'm running a debian potato system, with an epson stylus color 600
attached. i've got the printer setup great, using a filter generated by
apsfilter, the stcolor600 uniprint drivers from ghostscript 5.50. but,
there's one things i'd like to be able to do, just a convience really,
which is to be able to print 2 pages onto 1 page. at school (dec alpha) a
simple -N2 flag with lpr seems to do the trick, but that doesn't seem to
be available with my version of lpr... does anybody know how i might set
this up to work?
