Greetings and Salutations
I am trying to install the X-windows on a DosLinux, and I can't seem to
get mkfontdir to work. I have put the whole X11 package in, and then
found out about the bug about the X11 binaries.
I followed the steps outlined on the DosLinux homepage.

Subject: Port listening but no application?
Date: 6 Feb 2001 09:03:22 +0100
One application (vnc) which is listening on ports 5801, 5901 and 6001
crashed. No zombie, it's gone. But I still see the ports LISTENing
with netstat -a -p, but there is no program or PID associated with
them. I can also connect to the ports via telnet. but obviously I
don't get anything after beeing connected.
How can I stop these ports from listening (so that I can start another
vncserver on screen :1)?
Thanks a lot!

Create a small (8 - 16 MB) ext2 partition for /boot at the very beginning of
the disk (before anything else). Boot from diskette, mke2fs and mount the
partition under temporary name and copy the contents of /boot there. Rename
old /boot, mount the new partition as /boot and install LILO (run
/sbin/lilo).
The problem is that the BIOS should see all the data necessary for booting
under its own addressing scheme. The contents of /boot must *all* be below
cylinder 1024. The separate /boot partition ensures this.

Hello,
I've done this for Adabas RDBMS which really did speed it up.
I edited /usr/src/linux/include/asm/shmparam.h
-#define SHMMAX 0x2000000 /* max shared seg size (bytes) */
+#define SHMMAX 0x8000000 /* max shared seg size (bytes) */
/* Try not to change the default shipped SHMMAX - people rely on it */
and recompiled the kernel, I didn't knew that it should be possible with /proc,
as you write?
Good luck

Subject: SB Live! Software and Redhat 7

Hello to all Linuxists,
I'm a newbie to Linux, just installed Redhat 7. I have few questions about the use of
Sound Blaster
Live! 1024 on this system:
1. Is there available SAME KIND of DRIVERS for Linux than the Live!Ware package in
Windows?
( The ability to control all DSP-effects available in the card real-time,
applied e.g. to guitar
"multi-effects processor" ? )
2. I apologize that I have to use "Windowz terminology" :-), but I'd also need the
'corresponding' audio
software:
* "FastTracker / MadTracker"
- Some good tracker to build music from samples & instruments.
* "SoundForge"
(btw., THE BEST audio editing software ever made, IMO !!)
- Adding all possible effects with software to audio files,
( including Compression,Reverb,Delay,Bending,Fading,Tapping,
EQ,Flanger,Chorus, etc. etc. etc. )
* "MultiQuence", "DDClip", "Vegas Audio", etc.
- Multitrack editor/recorder.
Any useful help is very welcome !!! With best regards,
Tomi K.

No, we're quite aware of big business. Watching the government means
watching big business as well since big business interests dictate what the
government does and does not do.

I think, if you look closely enough, the problem is just the same over
there. Your governments are just a bit better at hiding it. High dollar

you gotta load the module sd_mod to make the device recognized, because it's
seen as a scsi device....
then you mount sda4... and that's done... i took a while to understand that
too as I'm not used to scsi devices...

Hello,
I want to install my 3Com 3c905-TX network card on my mandrake linux system
(kernel 2.2.17). I have tried to do this by adding a line to my
/etc/modules.conf line:
alias eth0 3c90x
I've checked in my /lib/modules directory and the module exists. When I do
modprobe eth0
I get the error:
/lib/modules/3c90x.o: init_module: Device or Resource busy
insmod 3c905x.o failed
insmod eth0 failed
I tried to set an extra options line like this:
alias eth0 3c90x
options 3c90x IRQ=7 IO=0x280
When i do a modprobe, i get the error
/lib/modules/3c90x: symbol for parameter IRQ not found
insmod 3c905x.o failed
insmod eth0 failed
What am i doing wrong?

oh geez, not another reverse dick size wars thread...
i have a sparc ipx with 32mb running netbsd. it's not too bad really.
much more bearable than the 486 with only 24mb ram running slackware,
but that has nothing to do with the amount of ram. what drives me
nuts with the 486 is its slow disk. if it weren't for that, the
swapping wouldn't be too bad. old scsi beats old ide.

if by "graphical" you mean point'n'click, then well, gnus is not for

Hi,
Has Red Hat made an kernel update since 2.2.16-22 ?
The 2.2.4 update on the CD's of RH 7 is just the header files.
Couldn't find anything about this on RH website so either I'm blind
or looking at the wrong place ?
I need a RH update, since I need a driver that is included with the RH
distribution but not with the ordinary kernel-update.

It's actually really simple:
1) either get a lilo version 21.4.3 or higher.
compile and install it (read the documentation that is included)
2) get a non-destructive repartitioning tool.
examples are: PowerQuest's Partition Magic : easy to use, but not
free
GNU's parted : perhaps less easy, but
free
I'm not sure(And actually doubt it), but FIPS might be capable of
this too.
Just take off one cylinder from the beginning of C: and make that
/boot
Succes.

I am coming late to this thread but will put my 2c.
Anyone trying to sell you additional h/w as prerequisite of installing
Linux - do not listen.
Started Linux on 586/100 16M RAM.(Ok overclocked to 120 - the mobo had 40M
setting)
Compared to MS-Glassware on the same h/w it was much faster.
Only much later, you start wondering how to improve the performance, but
then you don't have to rely on others.
Linux "makes" you to understand your box.
But, big BUT, I went Slackware, it may be a factor.
