I did a search at http://www.google.com/linux (an excellent
Linux-specific search engine) for petalo.c, and another for
limits.conf when the first search indicated that that file
is the key for setting user limits. Here's what I found:

petalo.c is a very simple program that attempts to allocate
all available memory (or at least 6 GB of it); it can be
found here:

http://boudicca.tux.org/hypermail/linux-kernel/1999week39/1174.html
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/9909.3/0253.html

There are ways to set a variety of limits on Linux users,
which will guard the OS (and other users) against programs
that use too much memory, or too many files, processes, etc.
This will protect against memory munchers, file fiends,
stack stretchers, login loopers, process procreators... 8^)

search for "limits" on this page:
http://www.math.muni.cz/linux/Linux-PAM/html/pam-6.html

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Security-HOWTO-5.html

http://www.premierweb.com/linux/LDP/LDP/lasg/lasg-www/users/

Here's an excerpt from the PAM page, which describes the
limits that can be set:

Each line of the configuration file describes a limit for
  a user in the form:

  <domain> <type> <item> <value>

The fields listed above can be filled with the following:
  <domain> can be:

  + a username
  + a groupname, with @group syntax
+ the wildcard *, for default entry

<type> can have the two values:

+ soft for enforcing soft limits
+ hard for enforcing hard limits

<item> can be one of the following:

+ core - limits the core file size (KB)
+ data - max data size (KB)
+ fsize - maximum filesize (KB)
+ memlock - max locked-in-memory address space (KB)
+ nofile - max number of open files
+ rss - max resident set size (KB)
+ stack - max stack size (KB)
+ cpu - max CPU time (MIN)
+ nproc - max number of processes
+ as - address space limit
+ maxlogins - max number of logins for this user.

Check the contents of /etc/crontab and the files in the directory
/etc/cron.monthly. It is remotely possible one of the scripts
in one of the other /etc/cron.* directories could be doing it.
Finally run
crontab -l
as root to see what root's crontab is doing.

Yes, like a variable, place holder or whatever.

 cat foo | grep bar

Substitute any legitimate value for 'foo' (ie. a file in this case) and
'bar'.

Two thoughts: IBM and NetManage (formerly NetSoft). FYI, we use telnet 5250
over TCP/IP from Win95 machines at work to connect to AS/400's. The software
is NetSoft Elite or NetSoft Portfolio. IBM has RS6000's as well as AS/400's
so probably has a solution to this as well.

Good luck,

No, it means substitute whatever is appropriate for your system. 'foo'
and 'bar' are often used as generic variables in examples where actual
paths or variable names are unknown to the author, since they may vary.

I've encountered this. If you install the "ncurses-devel" package,
you usually pick up the piece that make menuconfig needs. (However,
I've also encountered a machine that that didn't help.)

Usually, even though make menuconfig is broken, you can still use
make xconfig. And I don't think there's any way to break make config.

Haven't tried 'em -- "make config" is a bit too klutzy for my taste,
and 'make xconfig' is not an option since I'm not running X. (The
system is an old 486 with limited memory and disk space.)

It's an ancient programming example name, usually paired with
"bar", as in /foo/bar or foo.bar, etc. According to "Saving

I tried these commands. But the ncr53c8xx device is busy.
rmmod can't unload it and insmod can't load sym53c8xx.
I ran 'lsmod' and found that the use count is 6.
Is there a file that specify which modules to load during bootup?

This means X has no fonts at all. fixed is tried when all else fails.
xfs is belly up most likely.

Most likely cause is FS is nearly full, or permissions on /tmp are

For about a year I've been able to connect to my dialup ISP without any
problem. About three weeks ago I started having occasional problems. I
would seemingly connect ok, which is to say 'ifconfig' would return a
temporary address for me, but I couldn't go anywhere with the connection.
I couldn't even ping my own ISP. This is now happening about one attempt
in three or four.

If I do a 'route -n' command it all looks ok, If I do a 'route' command
without the '-n' switch it hangs.

Most of the time I can just hang up, redial, and get a good connection.

As far as I know I haven't made any configuration changes at my end, but
the ISP is not admitting to any changes at their end either.

Any guesses?

Foo and Bar are special in that they are three tmp variable names in
one. You get "foo" you get "bar" and then you get "foobar"

Very convienient. i, j, and k can only do so much. Foobar just sort of
feels right. Not too many letters, not difficult to say.

Look at (free) amanda: www.amanda.org. It is a wrapper that does the
scheduling and load balancing using the native dump or GNUtar
for the actual backup runs. It takes a bit of work to configure
but runs nearly 'hands-off' once it is set up. You tell it
how many tapes you want in a rotation and how many in a
'dumpset' and it will make sure that each dumpset has at least
one level 0 dump (full) of each filesystem and that you get
at least an incremental of everything every run. It will
bump up the frequency of level 0's if there is space on the
tapes and go down to level 2's if necessary to make things fit.
If you give it a reasonable amount of holding disk space it
will run the dumps in parallel and can recover gracefully from
tape errors or not having the right tape loaded at runtime.

A big plus is that you can do a restore using only the native
tools if necessary (dd and restore or GNUtar). However, note
that there are problems with both dump and GNUtar as distributed
with many Linux systems. You either need GNUtar 1.12 with
the patches distributed with amanda or 1.13.11 or later. With
dump you should probably look up the latest release mentioned
on www.freshmeat.net.

There is a book section about amanda at
http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html.

Is there a source for info about switching to or from an external monitor
on notebook computers? The Laptop-HOWTO just mentions external monitors
briefly with no specifics.

I have a Sony PCG-F450 with NeoMagic 256AV video (SVGA X server). When
booted with external monitor connected, the text console displays on both.
By using the normal Fn-F7 I can switch to just the external monitor, but
it will not switch back to the laptop display or both again.

If I try to start X with just the external monitor on, the external
monitor goes out, and it looks like my laptop screen is on fire
(apparently trying to use external monitor settings on laptop display).
I can stop that by switching to a console (which appears back on the
external monitor).

So it appears that console output can go to the external monitor, but I
have not found anything yet that tells how to do that in X.

]well I wish I were using kppp this is from the command line no gui at
]all.?

OK. Log on as root. Run
/usr/sbin/pppd
If you get about 10 sec of garbage, you have ppp in your kernel.
If not and you are running the 2.0.x kernel, see if kerneld is running
ps aux|grep kerneld|grep -v grep
should show it if it is. If it is not, start it
kerneld
will do
Then try again.
If still no luck, see if ppp.o exists.
ls /lib/modules/*/
Try insmod ppp
If youare on the 2.2.x kernels, it is kmod which should load the kernels
on demand and it is part of the kernel.

This seems to have been a bug with Redhat introduced into pppd. Go to
their site and update kppp and pppd-- or get the source and compile it
yourself.

You maybe can change entry in /etc/profile. The way the prompt appears is
set up in profile. See man bash \PS1 for more info. The settings can also
be viewed in PS1 and PS2 env variables displayed with command "printenv".

By entering "defaultroute" in my file " options " in /etc/ ppp, my dial
connection is a little better but still has problems. Fetchmail now
show messages that it is flushing mail from the server, but there is no
mail to be found! The ping program gives an address for the name in "
ping name" , but fails to ping anything! What is a routing table? Do I
need one? Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
