Get the latest version of the tulip.c driver at:

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.c

and either compile it as a module or replace the drivers/net/tulip.c file
in your kernel source with this tulip.c and rebuild your kernel.

I subscribed to LJ about six months ago, any my subscription included a
free copy of Suse.
After several months and several calls, they keep assuring me that
either a copy of Suse or Caldera will be in the mail any day. My "free"
copy supposedly comes with a paid subscription, but I'm ready to give
up, and I won't be renewing my subscription.

I am curious to know if anyone else has had similar experiences with
this publication. Aside from this problem, I don't find the magazine
informative, definitely not as good as Sys Admin. I hope someone finds
this useful.

Not the perfect solution I'm sure , but:
I also have a rage 3d video controller and had to trick the system by choosing
unlisted card during setup and telling it to use the SVGA xserver instead of
the MACH64 server. It seems to work okay for me that way.

The Linux version of Oracle is very obviously derived from the Soalris
version, and one of Soalris' more unusual features is that /bin and
/usr/bin are one and the same (soft link). Hence the existence of
/usr/bin/sh on Solaris, and probably the source of your dud link.

Does your slackware have rpm2cpio and cpio?? If so, you can convert the
rpm to a cpio file and get the files within it with cpio.

Hola Jose

Creo que seria mejor y ayudaria mas si nos dices estos datos:

- tipo de tarjeta de Sonido (SoundBlaster u otra, canal de cuantos bits,.. si es

   Plug & Play -PnP- o no, etc.. ) si esta incluida en la Tarjeta Madre deberia
   aparecer en los fasciculos que venian con ella..
   ES IMPORTANTE SABER SI ES PnP O NO
- tipo de CD-ROM (o Cederron como dicen por ahi.. Marca, Xs ,etc..)

Yo personalmente no te podria ayudar mucho,.. tengo unos problemas parecidos

Suerte!

Use the default= option in our /etc/lilo.conf. Example:

--
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=dos
image=/boot/vmlinuz
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda3
        read-only
other=/dev/hda1
        label=dos
        table=/dev/hda
--

For more info, type:

man lilo.conf

Run the Linux install as far as partitioning the hard drive and "initializing"
(building file systems and swap signature) the Linux partitions.

Partition the drive as follows:
/dev/hda1   10 MB   ext2, mounted as /boot
/dev/hda2    5 GB   fat32, mounted as /microsoft
/dev/hda3  400 MB   ext2, mounted as /
/dev/hda4   extended
/dev/hda5  120 MB   linux swap
/dev/hda6  120 MB   spare
/dev/hda7    7 GB   ext2, mounted as /usr

Reboot.  Install the Microsoft product.

Reboot. Continue the Linux installation. DO NOT let the installation
program install LILO. Make a boot floppy.

Boot the boot floppy. Make sure Linux is working okay.

Put all the lilo related files, including your bootkernels,
in /boot. Edit /etc/lilo.conf. DO NOT trust the lilo.conf made by
the installation program.  Run /sbin/lilo.

This will work. Ez-bios is irrelevant.

Just for the record.. the reset command would be:

^v^o

I.e. hold in the ctrl key while keying a "v" - then repeat, now followed
by an o.
(that's the letter o as you probably see.)

The FAQ assumes that you don't have a SCSI adaptor already installed.
It makes the parallel port the first adaptor. ie
/dev/sda
       ^

In a system with a real scsi adaptor I think the parallel port gets the
last choice and so the heighest letter. In Phillip's case
- 2 SCSI adaptors
/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
- and the parallel port zip drive
/dev/sdc

The 4 after that refers to the partition on the drive. For some strange
unknown reason iomega makes the data partition on their disks partition
number 4. Other manufactures use the sensibe choice of partition 1.

So on my system with 1 primary windows partiton, 2 linux partitons (one
swap) and 2 windows extended partitions and a parallel port zip drive.

/dev/sda1   - primary windows partition
/dev/sda2   - primary linux partition
/dev/sda3   - linux swap partition
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6 - two extended partitions (they start at 5 afaik)

/dev/sdb4 - parallel port zip drive for iomega zip disks
/dev/sdb1 - parallel port zip drive for other zip disks

You might want to read the SCSI howto for more (accurate) information.

I've just got myself a great deal on a used

Is there any thing equivalent to the dos program FIPS
for mac. All the faqs I've read about linux on powerpc
seems to suggest that I have to reinstall the os to
do the partitioning and I don't want to do that.

I would appreciate anyone pointing me in the right
direction to get me started. A better faq's than
the faq-o-matic would be nice.

Also I read about this yellow dog linux and now I can only
find www.linuxppc.com. How many distributions are there
for linuxppc.com?

Does anyone know a cheap cd vendor for ppc? I know
linux central and cheapbytes don't carry ppc version.

Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0

I've tried using +pap, +chap, ogin:. Nothing seems to work. I know for a

kernel does not compile' is not sufficient.
Let's have a look: Have you used the raidpatches for 2.2.10 or for
2.2.6? The former are very new (like a week maximum) and if you do not
have those, then try again with them.
What patch commandline did you use? Did it fail (i.e. does find
/usr/src/linux -name '*.rej' print anything)?
What is the _exact_ error with which the kernel compilation fails?
What is the _exact_ commandline you enter for mkraid (and the
corresponding config files)?

Subject: Shell script won't reliably kill its spawn

Anybody have an idea of either why the following script sometimes does
and sometimes doesn't successfully kill off all the background processes
spawned? Or a more reliable way to clean up?

#!/bin/sh
# ppp-on: script to connect to Avnet/Intac
INIT="'AT&F' OK ATZ1"
# Hackensack
PHONE=3594422
# Oradell
#PHONE=3614422
if netstat -i |grep -q ppp0;
  then echo PPP is already up, exiting.;
  else
    echo Attempting to bring up PPP link to Intac.
    sudo /sbin/route del default > /dev/null 2>&1
    sudo /usr/sbin/pppd connect "/usr/sbin/chat -r /tmp/pppspeedis ABORT BUSY etc.
    sudo /usr/bin/tail -fn2 /var/log/messages | grep 'pppd\[\|chat\[' &
    sudo /usr/bin/tail -fn0 /var/log/maillog &
    sudo /usr/sbin/pppstats -w 10 &
    sudo /usr/bin/tail -fn2 /var/log/messages | \
       if grep -q "pppd\[.*\]: Exit\.";
         then
         sudo kill -SIGTERM -$$

No, I switched from OS/2 since OS/2 was "murdered" by Microsoft by illegal
preloading of OS's on computers. ( see court cases, but MS got a slap on the
wrist ).

Had to find something else, since I've NEVER liked windows, and I've run just
about every OS between home and work, including AS/400 and SGI IRIX.
Linux has a lot to go for the average user ( including me ) but it doesn't
crash, it's free, it's customizable, and it doesn't have that "warning label"
on it!
