That's not the question I asked: I asked "What does a TCPIP
stack specifically have to do with multimedia?", the
dependance is the other way round.

Semantics *ARE* important in communication.

If you don't understand the difference between the two
questions, try:

"What would cars be without roads?"

"What would roads be without cars?"

I hope you can see that they are two different questions.
You can - can't you?

I am flaming him for raging inaccuracy, for example "(e.g.
DHCP, a Microsoft-invented extension to BootP)."

You do understand that the above statement is inaccurate -
don't you?

And also "In any case, direct bugs are not really the main
issue. The problem is that Amiga Inc. needs a TCP/IP kernel
that is very solid, well peer-reviewed, well extensible,
widely used, well-understood, professionally maintained etc.
>From my point of view Linux simply does not fit into that
category It is maintained by hobby programmers,"

When the main guy for that area is paid by Red Hat for his
work in that (and other) areas.

To claim the Linux TCP/IP stack is not solid, peer-reviewed,
extensible and widely used is ludicrous. It may not be to
his taste, but the above is plainly and simply wrong.

>(F.I.M.S. - Foot In Mouth Syndrome)

So you are defending inaccuracies? Why don't you post a
message saying "The Linux TCPIP kernel isn't widely used."

People deserve a good laugh (especially when it is being
compared to *BSD which has many fewer "seats").

Note: I have nothing against *BSD. I certainly would be
against *BSD and Linux becoming one OS.

Are you *sure* that comp.os.linux.misc, comp.os.ms-windows.advocacy,
comp.os.linux.advocacy, and gnu.misc.discuss are the best groups to
discuss this? I'm sure that the conversation has *nothing* to do with
Linux, and doesn't seem to have anything to do with ms-windows or GNU.

There has been extensive discussion of this issue in this
newsgroup. Try dejanews to get earlier postings. Briefly,
the rpm package that worked under RH5.X no longer works.
There are versions of G2 which can be found at obscure
places on the Realaudio web site. Locations are to be
found in the previous postings. But Realaudio is presumably
still working on it, so it is probably best to wait, and
it will become available as a standard package.

I am wonder how can I disallow one of my username being telnet or ftp
to? I tried to swtich the "account enable" checkbox in the Linuxconf
but the next time I go back into it the switch for enable is on again?
Is this a bug or I have to do something else? I do not want to kill the
username as I should do but I need to have the account on but just no
one can access to it.

Maybe it is the same program which runs differently when called by
different names. Maybe that if one wants to change the program one only
needs to replace one copy. With hard links, you have to make sure that
you delete every copy before you upgrade and then redo the links. It is
thus possible to err and end up with two different versions of the
program when there should only be one. Besides, inodes are cheap.

Hello,

just installed the wmaker 0.60 and the 0.9.5 wmsoundserver. Started from
a xterm, i will see "error on play event" when a event should come up,
nut no tone. The wmss was setted up well, all soundfiles with full path
and it plays when pressing the play-button.

When running the wmsoundserver, the nmaker cannot play any samples.
Without wmsoundserver it can play, looks like a blocked audiodevice.

System is a debian 2.1

Problems are not UID dependend, root will get no sound as all users.

What maybe the problem here?

I just checked my laptop, and I was not prompted for a root
password, but I seem to remember being so prompted on other
machines in the past.

I would also like to know whether there is some way to configure
this. As someone pointed out, it is certainly the case that
physical access to the machine is more effective than root
access, but in many communal settings, it would be awkward to
seize a machine in this way. Just rebooting and entering
linux single
is much simpler and could tempt someone who was not necessarily
bent on evil but just in a hurry. Such a person could do damage
without intending to.

Usually when Ive ran into this problem its because the tape drive cannot
find the beginning of the tape. This is most likely a dust problem. At
the company where I work we have a big problem with Surestore dat 8
drives failing in the same mannor because of a high dust problem.

The solution I came up with was quite simple. Disassemble and clean the
gears.

1. Take off the top to the drive and hook it up to power and insert a
tape. Watch to see if there is alot of slack in the take up reel when it
searches for the beginning of the tape.

The drive should make several attempts to find the beginning of the tape
and you will notice that the take up reel doesnt take up all the slack.
This is because there is dirt/dust on the gears below the reels.

Its not too hard to take them apart and clean them.

I can not run a fine X session with my LG Studioworks 44i monitor.
It does not run well with the standard timings, xvidtune did not help.
I've tried to calculate the video timings as is described in Video

So can someone help me with the correct video timings for this monitor?

Subject: Data Corruption Problem
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 20:23:16 GMT

Hi,

I need the help of some Linux gurus :). I wrote a small application
for use in our disk drive compatibility lab and I'm seeing data
corruption when using Redhat 6.0 (ran fine w/5.2). The test merely
does multi-process write pattern/compare exercising on the drive.

The problem seems to be on some level Linux caches and merges
sequential write requests and in doing so corrupts data. I've got a
SCSI logic trace showing corruption in the concantenated 64K SCSI
writes of my multiple 2Kish write() requests. I've tried with some
recent kernels, but still no change. Can anyone give me a pointer or
some information on resolving this issue?

Many thanks in advance.

Disabling the console logins can be done in /etc/inittab . Look
for a section that runs getty (or mingetty, or agetty, etc.), and
comment out all the entries that start with numbers.

It should be noted that this can make things very difficult in
case of emergency maintenance; if console logins must be disabled, it is
worth considering enabling a serial console for emergency on-site logins.

Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 20:19:55 GMT

In my workplace, there are quite a few Redhat 6 boxes, each which were
installed with different packages. We have a local mirror of RedHat on
a NFS exported directory as well as an other-RPM directory which
contains non-redhat rpm's (like ssh or one's we've built, etc.).

Is there a program that will install a given RPM (including checking for
dependencies and installing them if need be), given supplied NFS
locations (or mounted dirs)?

We want to be able to ask Mr. non-Linux-savvy to just call this program
and have his system updated without having to deal with locating
dependencies or playing with rpm.

Thanks!

Don't just add stuff to the end of the files, send them through the
syslogd like you're supposed to. It will add a datestamp, thread
messages from different sources together, prevent loss of data etc.

If you're doing it from within a program, use syslog(3); if you are
using a shell command then pipe it to logger(1).

When I try to access a MS security bulletin, such as

I am met with the pleasant error message:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'

Type mismatch: 'CInt'

/security/inc/scripts.txt, line 279

I'm using NS communicator via Linux and run Junkbuster. However, I get
the same error if I try the same URL via lynx, although it asked to
generate a cookie. Is this an example of ASP not working with any
browser or some more cookie nonsense? Why would they even need to use a
cookie for me to view a security bulletin? This is obviously annoying.
