I don't know if it changed in version 6 but in 5.2 timeconfig does the trick
and doesn't require a reboot.

I think the kernel sources default to disable "Poweroff on shutdown"
in the Advanced Power management settings tab.
Check this option under the "Power management" subsection
in the kernel config.

What's a good CD player? I've been using 'xplaycd' which is
mentioned in the CD-ROM HOWTO. It's adequate, but am wondering
if anyone else has compared different players and come up with
a clear favorite.

assuming some kind of linux and bash and
that you have gawk..
ls > upperlist.txt
(or ls --color=no > upperlist.txt if you have the
fancy ansi color settings on for ls in bash)
gawk '{print "mv",$0,tolower($0)}' upperlist.txt > /tmp/renameemall
chmod 700 /tmp/renameemall
/tmp/renameemall
and rm /tmp/renameemall
to clean up.

I am trying to setup a MCA 486 with RedHat 6.0 using a ppa Zip drive. I
made the kernel and installed what I thought I would need of rpms to the
zip disk. The system boots on a floppy and stops on the message:
Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.
I have the /etc/fstab and /etc/inittab properly configured (I think). Is
there anything special that I have to do when installing it to a zip
drive? I've read the HOWTOs on the Zip drive and now I am stuck. How do
I tell the kernel where my init is?
I appreciate any help, thanks!

Hi,
I have just installed RedHat 5.1 and GNOME that
comes with the CD. I have also added "exec gnome-session"
to the end of the .Xclients file.
I was able to start gnome, however, the windows
don't have any frames, scroll bars and title
bars, and they seem to overlap on the top-left
part of the screen.
Is there anything else that I should do to make it
work ?
Thanks

The only time I ever see this is a due to a flakey X server and using
Netscape. It has happened to me four times in three years.

AFAIK, you will have to run an nntp server (ie, leafnode,
inn) to read the local spool and make it available to
standard nntp clients.

so have you tried checking it manually? log in as root, run fsck manually
and see what it says then. Is hda6 your / ?

try xmcd - it's pretty sophisticated, a little too much so IMHO

Subject: Am I damaging my Monitor !!

Hi all
I am currently running RH6.0 on a PII 350 + 64 MB ram + 16mb Riva TNT
machine. I also have a 15'' monitor that is not listed under Xconfigurator.
the problem 'i think' is that when I switch to different resolutions (Ctrl +
Alt +/- ) the screen seems distorted at different areas (depending on the
resolution). Am I damaging my monitor ? Also when X just starts up (the grey
screen just before the logon) there are horizontal lines moving across the
screen, but once the logon screen appears it looks fine !!
At the moment I have X up and running but I am not sure if I have chosen
refresh rates that may be harmful to my Monitor.
My monitor manual says the following :
'15 inch multi-scanning color monitor capable of resolutions up to 1280 x
1024 (non-interlaced)'
' Multi-scanning at horizontal frequencies of 30KHz to 70 Khz, and vertical
frequencies of 50KHz to 100KHz'
I have chosen a custom monitor type and selected one
'that is capable of 1280 x 1024 at 60Khz'
I have also chosen a few other resolutions that I would like
eg 800x600 etc.
How do I know which one to choose ?
Any info would be great !!
I would appreciate if you could email me directly at

(remove the REMOVETHIS :)

Subject: Unresolved symbols in module...
Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 11:54:32 -0500
After compiling my kernel and rebooting it, I got the message "Unresolved
symbols in module ..." for a lot of modules. I did everything by the book:
make mrproper ; make menuconfig ; make dep ; make clean ; make boot ; make
modules ; make modules_install
I am using RH 4.2 w/ kernel 2.0.36 and libc 5.4.46 and the message also
shows when I issue "depmod -a" when logged as root.
In the kernel config menu, I chose not to have version information on the
modules. When I compiled with version information and rebooted, I got
several messages that there was a version mismatch between the modules and
the current kernel, although everything was built on the same run.
How can I solve the "Unresolved symbols ...." problem?
Thanks.

Hi Rax.
I got rid of a lot my X problems when I chose "generic multisync" for my

tar cvMf /dev/fd0 directory_name
created a multivolume tar backup for me on two floppies for
a 2+MB directory.
tar tvMf /dev/fd0
reported back to me the contents of the tar archive.
I didn't actually try to recover any of the files.
The floppies were originally dos formatted floppies but
after the tar they were no longer so recognized. I
don't see that as a problem.
You probably would want to add the z option to compress the
data.
Do man tar to find out what the options mean.

Make sure init is statically linked, otherwise, it won't be loaded.

KRN has no support whatsoever for any kind of local news spool.
In fact, I wouldn't expect any newsreader other than slrn to be able
to read the spool created by slrnpull.
