You may have to specify a size for the dump file. There
are other problems with dumping to a file. Namely, you
can to null out the file before hand or if the dump is
smaller than the existing dump file, dump doesn't change
the size of the file, os it has garbage at the end.

You would probably be better off using tar. The GNU tar used
by Linux has lots of options and is very flexible. The
only feature possessed by dump that tar lacks is that when
restoring from incremental dumps, you can in principle
recreate your file system exactly as it was after the
last incremental dump. With tar you can also do incremental
tars by use of dates, but you won't have a record of what
was removed as well as what was added. But if you are
dumping the whole file system, this is irrelevant.

This is an area where old fashioned pencil and paper seem to be the
most efficent approach for my (personal) needs. With the caveat that I've
just given them a quick look, here are some Linux apps I'm aware
of;

        CBB (Tcl/Tk based)

        Moneydance (Shareware, Java based)

        Many good links ...

When shopping around for a cd player, or indeed, other software for your
box, keep in mind the requirements for which library it needs. You
could obtain the actual program, and later discover that you also need
another library to go along with it.

I only know the GCC-2.8.1 versions, in which c++ and g++ are hard
links to the same executable which is _not_ the same as gcc.

I don't know what the differences actually are, but you might try
something like

  $ gcc foo.cc -I/usr/include/g++ -lstdc++

(however, gcc seems to know enough to put /usr/include/g++ in the
include path anyway. Have you tried "-v" to see what gcc is getting up
to?)

I want to move my existing Linux installation from one machine to
another....

If I just move the HDD from the existing box to the new box, it freezes
on boot.

What is the easiest and best way to rewrite the MBR/LILO so it will
work on the new system?

I am also not sure what the best way to copy the partitions is.

If I use DD, do I have to make sure all of the partition sizes are 100%
the same??

I could try to use Drive Image or Ghost to do this. Has anyone ever
tried this??

What utilities are there for copying file systems and permissions from
one partition to the next?

I have a CDR-RW drive which I could try to use as a backup device for
this purpose....

How can I back up with permissions onto CDRW under Linux??

I don't think you want to do anything to sendmail on your machine.
What you need to do is to tell your mail server to keep mail
on it rather than forwarding it to your machine. This will
probably have to be done by the system administrator of that
machine---unless you happen to be doing it by a .forward
in your directory on the mail server. Then, assuming
pop service is set up on your mail server, you can use fetchmail
and use it to download your mail, which you can read by any
of the many mailer readers provided by Linux. Alternately,
you can read your mail using Netscape Communicator, which can
be set up as a pop mail client. You can also use Netscape to
send your mail, as I am now doing since I use it to read news.
(With Netscape you don't need to run fetchmail, since Netscape
gets your mail from the server for you.) You might prefer
Netscape since it is vaguely Eudora like.

Ctrl-Alt-+ under X allows you to cycle among the different
resolutions you have set up under you X configuration. It only
changes the `size' of the desktop if you have extra video memory
so that you ahve avirtual desktop under the lower resolution which
uses all the memory. Many people don't like the virtual desktop.

If you have only selected one resolution, Ctrl-Alt-+/- won't
do anything.

There is a symbolic link
/etc/localtime
You have to look to see which file to link to, but it should be
fairly clear with some searching.
But it is probably better to use linuxconf.

If you feel really ambitious, you can try the following. We
actually did this.

Use a boot/rescue disk to run a ramdisk version of Linux.
Use its fdisk to repartition your disk leaving your /usr
partition alone but creating a big enough partition to
tar your /usr partition to a file in that (big) partition.
(Of course you will also have to make a file system on the
(big) partition first.) Then delete your /usr partition and
increase its size, and make a file system on it.
Finally use tar to copy back to your new enlarged /usr
partition. Of course, you would also have to recreate
whatever other partitions you wanted.

As I said, we have actually done this, but I'm not sure
I remember all the details. So it's possible I left out
some steps. Also, we may have used a VAResearch emergency
disk which probably has more capabilities than the boot/rescue
combination, so I am not sure the tar there is adequate for
the task.

Alternately, you could just back up everything that changed
(e.g., tar the entire /etc directory), and take this opportunity
to upgrade. When you repartition, use as few partitons as
you can get away with. If you don't run into the 1024 cylinder
problem, this might be ONE partition plus a swap partition.
If you need to put the kernel below 1024 cylinders, make a
small /boot partition and one other partition (plus a swap
partition). Then you are not likely to have this problem
in the future.

Delete all the modules that are giving you error messages,
you don't need them with the kernel you compiled. You
can do:
depmod -a >>delfiles
then edit delfiles to change the lines to a series of rm statements,
then execute the file to delete all the unused modules.

I managed to crash linux once. Put my swap files on a zip disk,
loaded a lot of programs to get the memory up, and then
forcefully ejected the disk. It crashed. Should I call tech

Yesterday my X-server crashed and it crashed hard. When I tried to restart

configure it that way to no avail. I also tried MANY MANY MANY times using
"xf86config". I am sure that my moniter settings were ok and pretty darn
sure that my card settings were correct (I tried every different possibility
there is just about". Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling

I've seen this problem - it was caused by Netscape on my system.
Once it started happening to a user, it would happen every time=20
Netscape was run by that user (but other users would still be ok).
It manifests itself as X windows locking up, and you not being able
to swap to another console, or kill the server. It's definitely a bug
in Netscape, in conjunction with X (wasn't linux supposed to stop
that sort of thing). Anyway, once you've fsck'ed the drive, deleting
the directory ~/.fullcircle from the users directory cleared the problem
for me (although it does crop up again occasionally if you run Nutscrape
a lot).

Why? gpsd and mxmap work just fine with my Earthmate...

I have an HP 2.5/5.0 GB IDE tape drive. The same command
gives me
Unknown tape drive type (type code 0)
File number=0, block number=0.
mt_resid: 0, mt_erreg: 0x0
mt_dsreg: 0x200, mt_gstat: 0x0
General status bits on (0):

which is what you got. But it works fine with tar to do
backups.

Your drive may not yet be supported by the driver.

If you look at the kernel source tree (/usr/src/linux/...)
you should be able to find the source code in a .c or .h file
for the driver for IDE tape drives. This might tell you if
your tape drive is supported. But maybe someone else will
come up with this information.

Subject: starting KDE on Redhat 6

I installed Redhat 6.0. It seems GNOME is the default Windows Manager when
type "startx".

How can I start KDE? Is "kdm" not enough? When I do "kde", it starts
giving me error messages.

I did install KDE when I was installing Linux itself. Do I need to
configure somewhere?

Also, if there is a site that explains, I appreciate.
Thanks in advance.
