Check again you compile options. There is one to set...
If it fails try add boot param:

mem=32MB

for example. If you use lilo add the following line to lilo.conf

append="mem 32MB"

and re-run lilo...

Are you sure your BIOS time is set to GMT?

You always can use tzconfig to change it...

> Am I missing soemthing obvious? Is this a problem in the build or kernel?

No it's one of the following problems:

BIOS setting,
time zone config,
start script error

check your start scripts (in Debian time zone stuff is in /etc/defults/,
sorry don't know others distros so much)

Wrong. Recent Linux distributions do not have the 30second sync

Got the same prob with svga MAME, some games won't work, since my Mach64
card isn't supported 100% with svga MAME. But it still runs much slower
than DOS on my P133. Do you got an ATI card? Did you try the vesa driver
in the xmamerc.dist?

Can anyone tell me how I can tell what products were installed in the

I'm not sure but you would use mmap instruction.
See includes or manul for more.

Yes, linux uses BIOS to find out how much memory is in system.
That's why sometime it seems to be less memory under linux.
BIOS calls are too stupid (the same with this infamous 13h
disk call - 8GB limit).

Taper works fine with the Exabyte SCSI tape drive on my

Colorado 5GB IDE drive on this one. It starts to backup but
invariably seg-faults a few minutes into the process. "tar"

A better way is:

To compile kernel you need:

kernel sources of course ;)
gcc (GNU C compiler)
make
ncurses devel files
libc devel files

I have recently upgraded my X11 package with 3.3.4 version of X. It
says in the readme that the TNT2 chipset is now supported and I'm going
to buy a Diamond Viper V770 card now. What I would like to know is
exactly what the process would be to configure X to use GL/Mesa?

In an earlier post there was a mention of going to the nvidia site and
downloading their driver software for full support. Do I still have to
do this now that X11 is supporting the chipset or does X11 provide the
full capable support? Is there another procedure I need to do, such as
just go straight to the mesa3d site and download the packages there?

Mainly, I just want to get the full potential use out of my card but am
looking for one good way to do it. If anyone has advice or suggestions
please let me know. Thanks.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I have a P5BV3+ Rev. CEO+ running with an AMD K6-2 400MHz CPU and 64MB
RAM. The computer contains two hard drives: a Western Digital 13GB
drive as the master on the primary IDE controller and a WDC 2.5GB drive
as the slave on that controller. An Acer Vuego 685A 8x CDROM Drive is
set up as the master on the secondary IDE controller. I run both
Windows98 and Linux. When the system boots, the BIOS recognizes all
three drives, but only lists one IDE controller in the PCI device list.
It assigns it IRQ 14.

This is not a problem for Windows98, and it can see and access the CDROM
drive. Linux 2.0.36 kernels can also see the secondary IDE controller
and assign it an IRQ. Linux 2.2.x kernels, however, see the secondary
IDE controller, but do not assign it an IRQ. When I try to mount the
CDROM drive under Linux, I receive an error message: "mount: the kernel
does not recognize /dev/hdc as a block device (maybe 'insmod driver'?)"
I believe that this happens because the BIOS is not assigning the
secondary IDE controller an IRQ.

Has anyone else experienced this with this motherboard? I have the
ATAPI CDROM drivers compiled into the kernel. How can I set the BIOS on
my P5BV3+ motherboard to assign an IRQ, preferably 15, to the secondary
ID. I have tried passing the kernel messages at boot to identify ide1
and to identify /dev/hdc as a cdrom drive, but that has not worked.

I would be grateful for any ideas. My next move is to try to move the
2.5GB drive (which my Linux llives on) to the secondary master position
and move the cdrom drive to the primary slave position to see if that
helps. Does anyone here have any other ideas on this problem?

TIA,
Sean

The only thing that I'd worry about for the computer is the
periphials. Check out www.linuxhardware.net and search for
anything you plan on buying, the reviews/driver downloads
are very helpful. The processor isn't that important, as
long as you get one that powerful enough for your needs. As
for the best distribution? Lets hope we don't get into an
another holy war between the options out there. Since
overall they all contain the same product, I recommend
picking the one that comes with the most stuff pre-installed
(like KDE and such), so you don't have to waste valuable
time downloading. If you absolutly must know what
distribution I recommend, I won't tell you, but it rhymes
with "Dead Cat" (Please send all flames about my choice to
/dev/null).

Hope I have been of help, Matt Lesko

If you could reply to my email address, as well as to the newsgroup, it
would be much appreciated. (a. I don't get on usenet very often, and b.
other people might need the info...you never know)

Here's my story -- I've got the entire Slackware 4.0 distribution
sitting on my hard drive, and a friend of mine wants a copy of it. I've
got the CD burner, and I've got the CD image ready to go...I'll probably
need to rebuild it, but other than that, it's ready to go. I wanted to
see if I could get a boot image on it so that he would be able to boot
from the CD and install off the CD.

What I need to know is this -- how do I go about making the boot disk
image? I probably wouldn't have much trouble with it, but the README's
I've been looking at say you need to have LILO load the ramdisk image.
a) Assuming I'll be using a 2.88M image, how do I go about making the
boot disk? What files do I need, what settings in fstab/lilo.conf/etc
do I need to have? Apparently the files stored in color.gz (the
standard install rootdisk image), when unzipped, are somewhere around
3MB...is there some way to have the ramdisk loader load just the .gz
file off the disk image?

Best regards,
Matt Cole

Well - I'm converting my 3D animator from windows (D3D) to Linux
using MesaGL (luckily the animation and modelling support classes
were kept seperate). What I'm seeing is that MesaGL give's approx 20%
of the performance of the D3D software renderer, and isn't in the same
league as the D3D hardware assisted performance. I'll post some proper
results when I get to the point I can run all the same functions on the
Linux animator as the D3D one. Not slating linux here (before some of
the faithful hammer me). GL is much easier to work with than D3D, and
I'm making the move into linux for the stability it gives - render perfor=
mance
isn't that much of an issue (I use a direct hardware link to a Playstatio=
n
to use as a real-time preview view anyway).

AFAIK this is still the case. Go there and read FAQ there. They talk about the
install process and what to expect from the driver performance wise.

As of now, you won't get the full potential under linux. This will take some
time on nvidias side and XFree86 4.0 (so the FAQ says). So you'll probably be
on your next graphics card by then.

You might want to talk to people who run 3dfx cards and see what sort of
performance they are getting in Mesa apps.

Hello,

I am having a problem making NIS work on a Small Linux (RH6) test lab. I
have 4 Linux Machines attached to the network. I want to use NIS. I have
installed the server and client sorftware.

I get an error that says: YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound

This msg comes out when I have a terminal window open and I use any
network service (i.e. telnet, ftp, netscape...).

The services work, but I get this annoying msg.

What does this mean? Because of this, I believe, NIS is not doing what it
is supposed to be doing. Any suggestions?
