Subject: Simple .java file won't compile - Permission to write .class file denied
Date: Thu, 02 Nov 2000 19:56:56 GMT

I just installed jdk1.3 on my linux system, and yet when i run javac on
a basic .java file, i get the following error message:

Example.java:3: error while writing Example: Example.class {Permission
denied}
class Example {
^
1 error

Is it possible that the jdk doesn't have the right permissions to be
able to write files? I installed it using YAST, so the permissions
were all set for me.

Example.java is so simple and compiles fine on my other computer
(Windows):

class example {
  public static void main(String args[]) {
    System.out.println("This is a simple Java program.");
  }
}

Any ideas?

I wonder if anybody knows how to assign programs to specific desktops at
startup. Suppose I want all the internet-related programs to start up
in 2nd workspace, while a terminal and something else to start in the
1st workspace. Is there any way to do this other than after the
start-up phase manually moving all the windows?

Thanks,

I am just learning about localtime and how it links to a time zone to keep
download files at the correct date/time stamp. But an associate tells me
that Linux can't run properly without a localtime, ie: it will put in the
wrong time for everything.

Is this true? The Linux book I have says that if you are downloading files
from elsewhere in the world then you don't even need to bother with
localtime.

Huh? Barring strange hacks involving SUID/SGID java binaries, the
JDK itself has nothing to do with permissions. It's *your*
account whose permissions are checked. Which directory were you
in at the time, did you have write permissions on the directory
(and if there is an existing Example.class file there, write
permissions on that), and would you have overflowed either the
partition [*] or your quota, if any?

[* By default, on an ext2 partition 5% is reserved for root.
So 95% full disk blocks, or alternately all inodes in use --
   either would suffice. ]

Hi,
I understand that the image root device, swap device, RAM disk
size, and video modes are stored in certain standardized locations
in the Linux kernel image. I was wondering if there is any
other information that is "remembered" by the kernel image
file on the hard drive relating to ones current operating system
parameters, for example nework parameters like routing
or network device configuration or anything else.

                                            Thanks

Which other NIC's have you installed successfully?
How well do you understand the boot process and what
the module loader needs to do? Do you have a handle
on the relationship of the kernel to the card?

Unable to understand any of the instructions?

You can pay tech writers and get worse documentation.

There's a lot of documentation on the network system, sure,
and very little of it is specific to your situation (written
before your card was made), and some of it assumes you have
read every book by W.R. Stevens.

But this can't be such a hard problem; the tulip cards work
on linux all the way to 2.2.17. You didn't post your kernel
.config, your dmesg where it fails to detect the card, or
anything specific about your hardware. I assume you've
already installed windows2000 as you were threatening to do,
and may have discovered some installation problems and compatability
issues, there as well.

Perhaps at some point you may realize that the people who hang out
on usenet and willing to help with a linux installation problem,
can usually help with windows problems too. If you'd given enough
info for your setup, your network problem might be solved right now.

Subject: two peices of legislation i would like to see
Date: Thu, 02 Nov 2000 20:43:12 GMT

well, its election time, and i was thinking about
what kind of legislation i would like to see next
session.

i realise these wont come to be anytime soon,
but just so its on the record:

'the reform in software purchasing act'

"
the congress of the united states, or any legislature
among the several states, shall not pass legislation
that will purchase, or otherwise subsidize, software
which is not free. for the purpouses of this act,
'software which is not free' shall be defined as
software copyrighted, trademarked, patented,
proprietized, or otherwise owned, by one or many
private companies or persons. systems already in use
shall not be affected, but nonfree software
replacements shall not be aquired or permitted.
"

summary: no government subsidization of M$,
sun, et al. computers in existence keep their
software, but upgrades to/of nonfree software
arent allowed. this would include schools
and the millitary.

'the public software act'

"
a sales tax of 1% shall be imposed on all software sold
in the united states, wether that software is copyrighted
by a private person or company, or 'free' software packaged
in a 'distribution' under the influence of one of many free
software licenses. monies gathered from this act shall be
placed in an account which shall be called 'the corporation
for public software' (hereafter reffered to as 'CPS'). this
money shall be used to set up a web site, whose name shall be
determined by administrators of the CPS,[download.gov?] that
will disseminate any and all free software known to be
availiable. the author(s) of the free software downloaded
thereat shall receive a percentage of the funds under the
administration of the CPS, the amount of which shall be
determined by the administrators of the CPS. the CPS shall
also have the power to refuse software given it, if it
is beleived to be harmful to a users computer hardware or
data. examples of rejectable software would include: software
in the presence, or 'infected' with, 'viruses', 'trojan horse
(s)', 'logic bombs', and any other software deemed to be
damaging to the user's computer or the data contained therein.
the CPS shall not reject software on the basis of its percived
controversality. the CPS shall also engage in soliciting
donations from users of software downloaded from the web site(s)
of the CPS, and shall use those funds identically to, and
together with, those funds gained from taxation. the CPS shall
not subsidize free software downloaded from places other than
the CPS, and shall not subsidize noncitizens of the united states.
"

summary: 1% sales tax [more? less?] on
sold software. money goes to the corporation
for public software, (cps) to create a
website for free/open software, and to
pay stipends to authors of free/open software
downloaded from there. the stipend depends
on how many copies are downloaded from
the CPS, with the amount of payment left
to the CPS. the cps can reject viral,
trojaned, or bombed programs, but not
controverssial or unpopular software.
it cant base payments on previous downloads.
it isnt allowed to pay forigners.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. What I meant is Linux support
for upload/download to the above-mentioned PDAs/organizers.
Not Linux running in the devices themselves. I'd like to use
a PDA/organizer for text editing while commuting and
upload/download text to my Linux box. Hope that is clear
enough.

cd's and us xmms for mp3's, but there are no system sounds anymore. i'm
not sure when it happened exaclty. i checked the sound configuration
and have checked both 'enable sound startup' and 'sounds for events'.
but, when i go to the 'event's tab and try to play a sound file...
nothing.

i even re-ran sndconfig and i can hear linus and the piano, but still no
sound in gnome. i created a sybolic link from /etc/sysconfig/sound ->
/etc/sysconfig/soundcard as suggested elsewhere, and still no luck.

i have system sounds in kde, just not in gnome.

I am currently using my roommate's printer via our local network. When I
want to print I use samba by typing the following at the prompt:

smbclient //hostname/printername -c 'print filename'

This works fine, but I'd like to set up my /etc/printcap so that I can
just use lpr. I tried entering the following line in printcap:

lp:lp=/dev/null:of="smbclient //hostname/printername 'print '":

but that doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for posting your /etc/lilo.conf file. What I still don't

Have you checked out http://www.agendacomputing.com ?

They have a $149 Palm-like device called the Agenda (what a coincidence!)
that actually runs on Linux. But, the part you're more interested in is
that it has a standard serial port.

Only problem is they haven't shipped any units yet. They are threatening to
ship any minute . . .

Hey:

Nice.

I'd alter this so it applied to hardware rather than software [the sale
of which is going to dry up, after all], and also set it up so that
manufacturers can offset donations to non-profit software development
against tax. It's a lot easier to sell a rebate than a tax, and
corporations would like it better if they got to support a project
relevant to their business, rather than "The Gummint".

Actually, didn't RMS come up with something very like this?

Depending on the application you want to run, and how you do it, you can
expect anything from seeing the app run more slowly than on a single machine
to seeing a near-linear scalability. However, even with 12 of the CPU's,
you're still only talking about 300 MHz equivalent. It would probably cost
you more in electricity to run all of them (and the cooling) than to just
purchase a semi-modern machine. : )

Hmm... let's do some math. Assume each one actually consumes about 100
watts of power. 1300 watts * 24 hrs/day = 31.2 kilowatt-hours per day, or
$2 per day. In half of a year, that's $360, enough to buy a case,
motherboard, a 500 MHz processor, and some RAM. (Oh yeah, I forgot to
factor in the cost of cooling...)
