Your backspace problem can be solved by the following
command in the xterm:
stty erase ^H
where ^H is the result of the backspace key press (CTRL-H)
Modify the .profile to include the command.

You're right - I do have the grandfathered connection - except that I
get 2.5 mbps. And it's beginning to sound like it's something I'm
gonna want to hold on to :-)

I don't think this is widely known but RedHat 6.2 flavored kernel also
includes the LFS patches and sufficiently new glibc. I haven't tried but
there should be no obstacles in producing files over 2GB on it.

Count each pixel in the CCD as a sensor. 640k pixels sounds around
right for a CCD (6.4m would be too much, but then it was just 100k more,
not a million).

I have a Slackware 7.0 setup residing upon a Maxtor 15G EIDE drive
which has a bad partition table. I would like to backup my setup
to my Seagate TR-4 tape drive, wipe the partition table, and restore from
tape. The TR-4 is a scsi drive and is attached off of my Symbios 53875SP
scsi controller, and appears to be working properly. I would like to
construct a set of boot floppies that contains a minimal Linux system that
also allows me to wipe, create, and format the new partitions, plus then
restore from the tape backup set all in one go (if possible). There's no
need to compress the backup-all told there's less than 4G of stuff to
backup which should fit fine upon a single tape. ANy suggestions or
pointers would be gratefully suggested.

GO to http://www.toms.net/rb and get Tom's RootBoot. Boot from that disk
and use the Linux fdisk program to change the partition type to something
Lose9x can see. You can use "mkdosfs -F32" to create a FAT32 filesystem
on that partition, or you can FORMAT D: from DOS. (mkdosfs is much
faster.)
Better yet, keep the Linux partition around and learn to use something
nifty...

Hey there, I need some help.
I have an interactive console application (actually, java console).
I'd like to automate it's use, and feed content to it.
Does anybody know how to do this? I tried piping stuff to the tty that it's
running on, but that just feeds to the output. Is there any way to feed
this app some input that it thinks is coming from the keyboard?
pls reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I don't check usenet that often.

You can get all sorts of different authentication modules depending on

Mysql and postgresql are undoubtedly the most widely used,
probably in that order, and both are undoubtedly more than
adequate for the purpose you're describing. Simpler isam
dbms's are probably also adequate, but you might want to
use one of the two I mentioned just because they're both so
widely used.

The only reason you would need that much memory on a video card is if
you're heavily into 3D games. For that, I'd reccommend a Voodoo 3 AGP or
a Matrox G400. If you're not heavily into 3D games, save yourself some
money and get something with less memory (ATi Xpert98/Rage Pro II, Matrox
G200 with 8M.) Don't buy nVidia, SiS, or Trident under any circumstances.

Because Corel radically altered the way they develop their Linux product
with WP9. With WP8 and earlier, UNIX (and Linux) development was handled
by outsourcing it to another company, which used Motif and just roughly
mirrored the user interface. Most of these versions were aimed at big
multi-user UNIX systems; the Linux port was just a byproduct of that.
Because these big multi-user UNIX systems often provide text-only access,
a text-only version is very handy to have. The WP9 port to Linux, by
contrast, is a port of the Windows code using WINE, and is aimed at
desktop Linux systems, where it's assumed X will be available.
(Note: I'm not trying to defend Corel's dropping of the text-only version,
only explain it. Also, I'd like to reiterate that I don't know for sure
that it HAS been dropped. I've seen no mention of it with respect to WP9,
though.)

Subject: Absoft f90 compiler from RH5.3->RH6.1 question
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 10:19:49 -0400
Hello there,
I recently got RH6.1 installed on my desktop. However, most other linux
boxes on the network are still under 5.2/5.3 and most of the linux
binaries on the network are geared towards those OS versions. When I try
to link f90 code using the Absoft compiler I get the unresolved
reference to _fxstat or _xstat error. Other posts to clf identified this
problem (the libc/glibc library change) and the Absoft FAQ states:
======
Platform: Intel/Linux
Problem Details:
OS Version: Linux V6.0
Product Version: Pro Fortran V5.0
Date: 11-May-1999
Q. I have (or recently upgraded) to Linux V6.0. When I compile,
I get unresolved references to "_fxstat" and "_xstat".
Am I missing a library?
A. The C library was also updated with Linux V6.0 from libc5 to glibc.
You will need a new Absoft runtime library that references
the updated C library:
ftp://ftp.absoft.com/pub/linux/profortran5.0/libfio_glibc.tar.gz
=========
which is great! My question is:
If the sysadmins here update the Absoft runtime library (on a server -
not my machine?) so the linker will work under RH6.1 will those users
that still have RH5.2/5.3 be able to use the Absoft compiler?
I tried to get info directly from Absoft but to access their support
site you need the product serial # which the higher ups here haven't yet
divulged to me (maybe they tossed the box?).
Thanks for any info
cheers,
paulv
