33 - 21 = 12 !!! You were programing a Cray when you were 12?

I'm 58. Fortran on a Honeywell 200 and a CDC 6600 in 1967. Then an
analog computer in 1974 for the physics class I was teaching... An
Apple II+ in 1978, a PC in 1983. About a dozen languages. My favorites
are: Forth, Turbo Pascal 3.02a, BASIC, Prolog... I hate COBOL, RPG...

I would see myself as socialist. Ive never wanted to be the
saviour of anyone. Im not so arrogant to think that I should have that
much power. The ideas is that the working classes rules themselves,
without any leaders, through a democracy a little more pervasive than
putting a cross on a ballot paper once every five years.

Well this is true for some socialists. Equally its
true for some who venerate the market as the cure to all ills. The
existance of some fanatics doesnt invalidate a whole ideology.

"\n" = 0000 1010, "J" = 0100 1010

Do you see the pattern?

IMHO you have a disk problem. If it was a dpkg problem (dselect is just a
dpkg front end) the best place for your question would be the debian-user
mailing list. Go to www.debian.org to subscribe.

Depends which version of SuSE.

I liked the YaST ppp configuration routine. All you needed to do was spicify
news, mail and nameservers, phone number, gateway IP, username and password,
and whether you were using PAP, CHAP or TERMINAL.

It then set up your scripts and you used ppp-up and ppp-down to
connect/disconnect...

This was VERY nice in 5.2, 5.3 and 6.0.

In 6.1 they removed it for some reason and decided that wvdial was better.

(I would have prefferred the CHOICE)

All the desktop computers in those days had BASIC on ROM.
Of course, some had DECENT BASICS (M$ BASIC was the most laughable
implementation ever).

They're both Unix derivatives... In fact, some BSD software is commomnly
used in Linux distributions... some of the daemons for example.

Right. In fact, the distribution license is less restrictive than GNU.
(which the majority of software on Linux distributions is).

Put SuSE Cd in drive.
Start YaST.
Go into "Choose/Install packages).
Go into "Change/Create configuration"
Select "Developement"
Select the package "lxsuse" (I think). It's the complete kernel source.
Press F10.
Select "Start installation"
When it's finished, press escape a few times.

Now cd /usr/src/linux and make menuconfig (or xconfig)

(I was using that for months until I succomed to the temptation about bought

I think it=B4s still there (somewhere on the CD in a directory named=20

But you=B4re right, I really didn=B4t get that decision either.

Yes, this will mean that sometimes the system will completely flog it's brains

the system can guess wrong. When it guesses wrong, get out the tapes!
Besides, I've never had a filesystem that thoroughly flogged without flaky

Yep, but still nothing to do with socialism. The human nature is one of
greed.I invest some money in stocks, but wouldn't dream (nightmare!!) about
the internet stocks. As far as I can remember not even one has really made
big money as an organization. There is no trackrecord, no dividend only big
losses and value on stock exchange goes up like a rocket.

Just like what did happen with the tulips.

Thanks, Lew, you're right. When I "noauto" the fstab line and
manually mount
     # mount -t ext2 /dev/hda5 /home
then it works okay. Unfortunately, the fstab line looks okay, too.
But I'll play around with it and probably stumble across the
offending field sooner or later. Thanks, again,

I compiled a simple C program using gcc but the a.out file
cannot be executed. An error message "permission
denied" appears, but the file mode is 777 already.

Any hints? TIA.

Well, My scsi quantim says about 40mb/s.

But there are more advantages than just speed. With Scsi you can do
multiple read/writes. Not with ide though. Plus, YOu can chain up to 7
devices per controller.

Best to go scsi.

I'm not really sure, though you'd need to consider the
controller/disk combination, not just the disk by itself.
An alternative (probably cheaper and maybe better alternative)
is to buy some more memory. That will let Linux cache more disk
and will probably significantly improve response time. Moreover,
memory accesses are much faster than even the fastest scsi,
so you may do better this way. Of course, it all depends on
your specific situation. Anyway, something to think about.

Subject: Soundblaster problem
Date: 31 Jul 1999 14:23:47 GMT

Netmeisters,

I would really, really like to get a sound card working under Linux so
I could play with the nifty new IBM ViaVoice stuff. My current
attempts center around a Creative 16 Plug-'n'-Pray Soundblaster card,
which is identified as a Creative Vibra 16 by its NT drivers and by
sndconfig (the latter program doesn't actually manage to get the card
to work, however). I am using a 2.2.5 kernel under a RedHat 6.0
install. The kernel is configured for SMP and my system has two
processors. I have attempted to follow the instructions under
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/VIBRA16. Problem is that when I get
to insmod sound or insmod sb I get the following errors:

/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol __global_cli
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol __global_save_flags
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol
__global_restore_flags
/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc/sb.o: unresolved symbol __global_sti

I see the same if I do a depmod -a. I think isapnp is set OK and there
are no hardware conflicts.

Does anyone know how to fix this or, if not, what would be a good
sound card that would be easy to set up for both NT and Linux?
Previously I have tried several variants of the Ensonique and Creative
AudioPCI, and they all either worked under Linux but not NT or the
reverse.

Thanks very much,

Matthew Fleming
