Every time I run the sosetup after installing the Star Office 5.0 .rpms
distributed with SuSE 6.0, I get the message "Star Office 5.0 OEM is already
installed in the following directory.
/opt/Office50
Sure enough, it seems to be there. But the dialog only gives me the option
to Modify, Deinstall, or Repair. If I cancel, the dialog goes away, but I
am still not able to run star office. All I really want to do is run the
darned thing. Running soffice gives me the same three options, but Star
Office itself does not run. Anybody out there run across this before?
Thanks in advance - I would appreciate any response to solve this!

Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 27.40 seconds = 1.17 MB/sec

Subject: Kernel Panic on Bootup . HELP !

Hi
I've been using Redhat Linux 5.2 for quite some time. I've just upgraded
to Redhat 6.0. But I have a serious problem with my computer. I installed
redhat 6 and configuered it to my needs .Just after setting it up( and after
several Linux Test Reboots ) , I booted into Windows 98 . I worked there
for some time . Then today morning when I tried to boot into Linux, I got a
kernel panic error !!! I spent quite some time customizing Linux to my needs
and I'm pretty frustrated now !!!
Note that I've had such an error about 2-3 times with Redhat 5.2 . I
didn't know why it was happening, but I reinstalled Linux 5.2 four times in
two
months ( each time losing my settings ! ) . I thought that the error might
be because I defraged my Hard Disk thru Windows . So this time , I
decided not to defrag Windows 98 drives . Fine . But yesterday , ALL I
did thru Windows was Surf the net via IE 5 . I didn't do any hard disk
intensive work thru windows !! Yet today morning I got the kernel panic
error . I've typed the error message below, so that you guys can help me
out.
My system config is :
Celeron 266 Mhz
128 MB RAM
6.5 GB hard Disk : Details :-
hda1 -> Windows98 partition
hda5 , hda6 -> Vfat Partitions. ( logical drives on an extended partition )
a 1 GB Linux partition ( hda? , hda4 I think, not sure )
94 MB Swap Partition ( hda? , don't remember )
NO other operating system . Only Windows 98 and Linux.
NO boot manager in use other than LILO.
a CDROM ( primary slave )
a DVDROM (secondary master)
Thank You .

What software did you use to create the partitions? Microsoft has been
known to copy partition information from the partition tables where it
belongs, and then use the copies, instead of reading the partitions
themselves, which means that it sometimes doesn't notice when the
partition tables have been modified by non-Microsoft partition software.
This is discussed in the fdisk man page.

In the case of Redhat 5.2, Fips is included on the CDROM installation disk
in the dosutils/... directory.
However, I believe Fips is intended to dynamically adjust DOS partitions
only.

I am running Netscape Navigator on RedHat Linux 6.0, and everytime I try to
run an html page with a java applet, an error message pops up indicating
that Netscape Navigator can't locate java40 in the java classpath.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? What is the name and location
of the file within Linux that contains the CLASSPATH setting?
Thanks in advance.

I just installed a Yamaha 4416S SCSI CDR. I'm connecting to
it with a aha152x scsi adapter, inserting the driver as a
module (as it needs parameters specified--not autoprobing).
My problem is that when I insert the module, the drive is
not recognized unless I have a valid data cd in it. If I
have a CDR blank, the module inserts, but no drive.
Is this a Yamaha problem, or a aha152x driver problem?
(Previous experience as I recall was that as soon as
the module was inserted, all the devices attached to
that adapter were recognized and listed on the screen.
That with a aha1542 adapter card, though.)

Thanks for your help. I actually got the latest HOWTO for Software-
Raid. The one on LDP and on my system is from Feb 99, while this one
is dated May... It has a little more detailed method for RAID1 on root..
Now, I cant get RAID to start. I setup the raidtab file, and fdisked
the two other hard drives just as my root drive is. After which, I ran
mkraid /dev/md0. It first tells me that it sees an ext2 filesystem on
the partition, but that is not so since I just fdisked and didn't
format the partitions. To solve this I used the -really-force flag.
It then creates the raid superblocks on both drives and then says
mkraid aborted. It never initializes the RAID...
Did you run into this problem? Also, I know this is later on, but what
is the best way to copy the entire contents of my root drive to the new
postion? I don't want to miss anything..
Thanks.

Hmm... I'm just glad Stephen Hawking thought differently. Despite the
(admittedly) glib answer, this is a tough topic... I do see your point but
still respectfully disagree. Maybe it's overly simplistic, but I think if
someone wants to stay alive, we help em stay alive; if someone wants to move
on, we allow them the dignity to choose their own way out.

I finally can compile the kernel. This was accomplished by removing libc5
and its headers and reisntalling glibc headers. I wasn't aware that my
RedHat 5.2 is glibc2-based and, being adventurous, carelessly installed the
libc5 RPMs from other vendors, messing up my /usr/include/.

Our network is extremely slow and overworked at the moment. What this
means is that samba occasionally loses contact with my NT share and
drops it. When I try to remount the share, it tells me that my /mnt
directory is busy. When I try to unmount the share, samba refuses.
Essentially what this means is that I need to kill the share and
everything associated with it. How can I do this?
