I am getting ready to start building a cluster and run it with Mandrake
5.3. I am planning on using 8 486's, cheap 100 M/b cards, one monitor
and graphic card. Is there anything any of you have learned that isn't on
the beowulf page or one of its links? Any input would be appreciated.
FOr examble, I'm not sure if the boards all have to be identical or just
have the same processor speeds. Thanks

I'm 43
I still own (and sometimes use) my first personal computer
(I used many others before purchasing one). It's a Cromemco

Check out Xfree86's website, where they list this:
ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro ................................. XF86_Mach64

I've got an ATI Rage Pro Lite. I found it listed on a differant page then

I'm sorry I can't help you more, I've crashed my main Linux box and I'm

Exactly. ALL companies have evil bureaucracies so they won't lose
business on that basis, and they do reduce expenses, and thus increase
profits, that way ...
>SCNR, but it's like that. Not all companies that deserve to lose lose.

Some people do. Some people have moved beyond this and understand
that those companies that succeed almost always deserve to lose.
It has to do with the fact that success is tied to Power and if
you focus on power then you deserve to lose.

Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 10:25:37 +0800
I swear it's chat's problem.
I can get linux to connect using xisp and x-windows, not a worry. I can also
get it working by pressing activate on the Network configurator. I can get
my modem dialing into my ISP from the command line using minicom. I have the
right pot: cua0, ttyS0, and modem. (using /dev/modem works with x-windows
and minicom)
However, if I follow the How-to's and set up a pppd/chat script combination,
it will not work.
When executing the script, I can see that the ATZ command gets through...
the modem hangs up. Great. But then it makes no attempts to dial. No lights
flicker, no sound comes out. I tried running just chat without pppd to see
the output, and it runs... ATZ command is sent, then nothing else.
Connect script is:
pppd connect 'chat "" "ATZ" "" ATD 90917055 CONNECT "" ogin: login word:
password' /dev/modem 57600 modem
All the information is correct (except passord and login of course) But the
modem doesn't even seem to dial.
I've tried to echo commands to the modem:
echo ATZ > /dev/modem
I dont get an error message, but it doesnt do anything (Like it would in
DOS). Any help would be appreciated... WHY WONT IT WORK FROM THE COMMAND
LINE!!!!! *grrrrr*

Yes, it would be worth my time if it would work for all winmodems. I
already have a winmodem, and I don't have enough spare cash to buy a new
real modem. I suspect many people are in the same boat. I also suspect
that these days, *most* people have CPU cycles going spare for *most* of
the time - and certainly most of their online time. Yes, it's not the
best and most elegant solution, but if it works perfectly adequately and
is considerably cheaper, I don't think we should scorn the idea too much.
You may also wish to consider how much time is spent answering questions
about winmodems. If they worked easily in Linux, this time could be
saved: how long will it be before the time spent answering questions is
greater than the time spent reverse engineering would be?

I agree it may send the wrong messages, but I suspect most manufacturers
aren't going to take much notice of Linux users for a while anyway.

I don't think it's as bad as that. My P100 would almost certainly grind
to a halt decompressing MP3s (given that it makes a dent in my NT P2/333
at work), but copes perfectly adequately with a 56K winmodem connection.
If it can work in Windows (with several Netscape windows running, no
less) then I'm sure it can cope under Linux.

I've read through the replies and the info on your system and thought maybe
I could help. I have a Packard Bell legend POS laying around here with
linux on it and I ran into the same problem when I installed RH 6. What I
did during the install was used the Sound Blaster/Panasonic driver and
specified the io port. This may work for you I'm not sure, but I think all
the 486's Packard Bell's were pretty much the same from what I've run into.
try using this line instead of autoprobing.

I noticed that XMMS 0.9.1 doesn't play mp3:s correctly on my system with
kernel 2.2.11. It plays about the first tenth of a second of the mp3
then pauses for about half a second and then again plays a tenth second
of the mp3 and so on, with kernel 2.2.10 with the same setup this "bug"
doesn't occur. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong ?

Okay, there were a couple of posts recently about someone running into
the 2Gb file size problem again, and someone posted that there would
never be an easy solution to this, simply because so many things on a 32
bit system assume that all files are less than 2Gb long. That makes sense
to me.
However, /. had a link today about XFS which I'd heard about briefly.
Quick background: It's a filesystem developed by SGI, and currently being
ported to Linux, where it will be released as Open Source with the GPL, I
believe. The plan is to make it a loadable module. It's being heralded as
a replacement for ext2, the main benefits (as far as I could see) being
large file sizes and journalling.
Now, there was nothing that I could see which limited the large file
sizes to 64 bit and higher machines - that would be nothing new as ext2
already does this on 64 bit machines, doesn't it?
So - does anyone know how the old 32 bit problems are likely to be
countered? Different system calls perhaps? Here's an example: fseek. How
could I fseek to (say) 10 Gb through a 15 Gb file?

Hi,
I've seen this post in here for a few weeks and I was wondering if
you've tried using x configurator to set up your display. At the command
prompt as "root" type "setup". It's the last choice on the menu. It
works great and really helps take the guess work out of getting the best
display out of your card and monitor. Without it I wouldn't be able to
get a descent 800 X 600 64K color depth.

Don't freak out, man. I just had a very similar problem with Mandrake. I
suggest totaly cleaning off your hard drive, (unless you've spent a lot of
time doing custom settings) and reinstalling. Not the best option, but think
of it this way- if you give up, yu're going to lose everything anyway.
A better option would be to see if you could reinstall the RPM (does Suse
use RPMs?) or whatever Suse uses to reinstall the pakage containing the
applixware programs and kppp. THERE IS a way to reinstall these, I AM SURE!
read your documentation I'm sure it tells you how to install and uninstall
packages.
And I have some advise- I canceled a Mandrake update today, and it totally
screwed things up. Don't do that- it's not fun!
Good luck, and happy Linuxing. Let us know what happens,

I must admit that although I am working with SuSE 6.1 ok now, the expired
software etc.. really niggled me.
Why on earth include a time limited package which is out of date so early
that it's past before you sell the damn thing. Especially when your
advertising and packaging pushes these things as a "Big Deal".
Then there is the StarOffice licence stuff made so easy (!). Altogether a
bit of a slog.
The SuSE installation, compared to Caldera and RedHat is an absolute dog. It
is not for the complete Linux beginner. Caldera installs easily and RedHat
is much more easily configured. Things like postgres are easy to upgrade in
RedHat and can be awkward in SuSE.
More importantly for you, setting up your connection in RedHat is very easy.
(I simply wanted to get the niggles out of my system!)

This has been fixed some months ago. Get jdk117_v3.

Methinks it would be a challenge to guarantee that those 486 boxes will
be identical.
It is reasonably likely that a 500 MHz Pentium III would cost not much
more than the price of 8 100 megabit Ethernet cards. And it would almost
certainly be cheaper to keep it running, at least in terms of power and
real estate consumption.
Remember: PCI + Cheap SIMMs + 4 years of Pentium upgrades means that
today's boxes are a *LOT* faster than 486 boxes.
Which goes to suggest that it might be wiser to try to find a smaller
number of Pentium-based boxes instead.
Sure, it may be cool to have an 8 node "Beowulf;" it would be sad if
my AMD K6/266 was significantly faster...

Sorry if this is too obvious, but is your local directory in your path?
I.e. did you try ./script_name or just script_name?

Sven,
Upon receiving a notice (many thanks Grant!) I did some more homework
and it seems that there are at least two sar-like utilities with the 3rd
one under way. They're hot hoT hOt hOT Hot HoT HOt HOT from the baker!
1. atsar_linux-1.4 / June 17 : A sar clone. To quote fresmeat:
The command atsar can be used to detect performance-bottlenecks on Intel
x86 LINUX-systems, similar to the command sar on other UNIX-platforms.
Atsar offers the possibility to show what is happening on the system at
this moment (by supplying an interval and the number of samples as
command-line arguments). However it also keeps track of the system-load
in the past by maintaining history-files from which information can be
extracted. The current version of atsar gathers statistics about the
utilization of CPU's, disks, memory and swap, and network-interfaces
(TCP/IP).
Download from:
ftp://ftp.atcomputing.nl/pub/tools/linux/atsar_linux-1.4.tar.gz
2. sysstat-1.2 / July 30 : A sar clone. To quote freshmeat:
The sysstat package contains the sar and iostat commands for Linux. The
sar command collects and reports system activity information. These
information can also be saved in a system activity file for future
inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics
for tty devices and disks.

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/sysstat-1.2.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/linux/sunsite/system/status/sysstat-1.2.tar.gz
3. SCO released its source code for sar at June 14. (
http://www.sco.com/press/releases/1999/6868.html )
I haven't tried any of them as yet (wanted to break the good news first)
