yes, you're right, when I use '/dev/lp0', the test output is perfect.
Thanks for your reply!

If you have a little money to put toward Partition Magic 4.x that might not
be a bad investment.
I did see a utility on freshmeat.net not too long about about a ext2
resizer program, never used though.

Your vi is probably either vim or elvis. I think that very recent
versions of both of these can be built with X11 support, which let them
do multiple windows and stuff; and it looks like you have one of these
versions. (Slackware 4.0 has new versions of elvis and vim, but they
were built without X11; I don't know about whatever distribution you
are using.)
Apparently, after reporting the failure to connect to the X server
(which was started for a different user ID), your vi disables the X11
support and runs in terminal mode. Does it make a difference if your
DISPLAY environment variable isn't set all all before you start vi?

I'm not a Java developer (though I would much like to be) so take it
with a grain of salt. Anyway, there is "kaffe" java virtual machine with
just-in-time option. It is not a development environment though. I seem
to recall there was a development env. but can't remember its name.
Kaffe docs might point you to right direction.

Another text mode editor I've run across is lpe. It has different "modes"
including a mode for C. Take a look in www.linuxapps.com under Editors >>
Code... It's the only one in that section.
If you want a GUI editor, go with CoolEdit, also on LinuxApps.com, in the
Editors >> Text section. You may want to remove cool-icons (an extra that comes
with it though, I found it locked up X).

I've got several problems and I hope someone can help me.
1. I can't figure out how to set up my internet connection. My ISP says my
modem is software based and won't work. It is a Rockwell modem and I was
told when I bought my computer (IBM Aptiva 530) that the modem was hardware
based. Is there a program on the CDs that will configure this for me?
2. What is the 2nd CD for and what's on it? How do I access what's on it?
I can't even get the Apps CD to install anything. I looked in /mnt/cdrom
and there is nothing there.
3. I can't get the sound to work. I've got ESS Audio and tried all three
selections in the sound config utility.
4. How do I run a program from the file manager?
5. I realize these are a lot of dumb questions but I'm about to have a
nervous breakdown. I won't even go into all the problems I had installing
it. By the way, I wouldn't suggest buying the Red Hat version (I thought
that the reason they charge so much for a free product must be because of
excellent documentation on the product which is definitely not what I got.
Simply put the manuals suck.) Luckily I've still got my laptop with Windows
98. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've recently discovered the dyndns website at:
http://members.dyndns.org/
What I would like to do is to have my computer
automatically sense when my IP address changes,
and then appropriately contact the dyndns web site
and inform them of my new ip address. I'm running
off of a ppp dialup modem, and I've tried several programs
including
1) ddclient which would be ideal but unfortunately it uses
dhcpcd to automatically detect when the ip address changes...and dhcpcd
apparently only works with ethernet
interfaces. If anyone out there knows of a program
that works like dhcpcd with dialup modem connections I would greatly
appreciate knowing about.
2) ddup which didn't seem to want to work
3) dyndns1.1.sh which uses the old dyndns system and doesn't seem to
work anymore.
If anyone out there knows of a program, script, etc.
to to this I would be very grateful, thanks again,
Jason

Subject: modules????

After struggling with installling this network card for 2 days, I have
decided I need help. I have a D-Link DFE530-TX 10/100 pci card. I have
the tulip driver and the de4x5 driver. I have been trying to install
either of them as modules with no luck. modprobe never sees the card
and eth0 never shows up in dmesg. Everytime I try to "insmod tulip" I
get a message that says "device or resource busy". Thinking that
another driver was already attached to the nic I commented out every
line in /etc/conf.modules with no luck (the device still comes up
busy). I have uncommented the line in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules for the
tulip driver. I have recompiled the kernel with module support. If I
knew how I would compile the kernel with the tulip driver installed but
I don't. Could somebody help me. If I am just one step away from
getting it to work as a module let me know. Otherwise could you tell me
how to recompile the kernel with the driver. I have about 200 pages of
kernel/ethernet/networking.... how-tos infront of me but they aren't
very clear as to what I am doing wrong!! Oh ya I am running slackware
if that makes a difference. And I have run the Slackware netconfig.
And if cross posting is frowned upon I apologize. I always see it done
but I have never seen any rules of etiquet regarding its use.
thanks in advance,
marc

Now that you mention it, I have seen
a usitiity that will take PostScript pages
and automatically make them print first one
side, then another. You have to manually
flip the pages.
Can't remember the name of it, though.
Sorry, if you have a duplex printer, don't know

I think it is a pretty good guess that whenever you get a "No such file
or directory" in such a situtation, it means that the path to your
command interpreter (Perl?) at the head of your script is incorrect.

Now, compare all of that with the following Linux solution:
# lilo.conf configuration
# Start LILO global Section
boot=/dev/hda
read-only
prompt
timeout=100
vga = normal
#
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda5
label = linux
#
# DOS bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
label = dos
table = /dev/hda
In addition, the lilo allows several additional parameters to be
assigned that aren't in lilo.conf.

You did notice that I said 'tier one' service? I used to keep to phone
lines to my house, one for family use and one for my computer.
Switching to ADSL allowed me to drop back to one phone line and still
have normal phone usage even if I go 24/7 on the internet with my
computer. The net cost to me was only about $5. If I were to 'turn on
the faucet' to tier two (about 768Kb) or three (1.4MB) the increase cost
would not be warranted by my mere 60-100 hours/month of internet usage.
The minister of finance (my wife) would expect parity in expenditures on
social functions. ;-)

Hi,
I was configuring some new computers at Penguin Computing and have a
question about processors.
They have a AMD K6-111 450 MHz w/256 KB L2 Cache which is significantly
cheaper than a Pentium.
Is there a downside to the AMD compared to the Pentium?
Is 256 KB L2 Cache enough? It does not seem like alot of cache.
This computer will of course be running RedHat Linux.
Thanks

Subject: Problem with GNOME on a Redhat 6.0 machine

Hi.
I just started playing around with GNOME (and KDE as well, using
switchdesk to switch between those two) recently, and I'm having a slight
problem with it now. Every time I start it, gmc acts up; it starts and
stops about every second. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling every
gnome* rpm I have, but it didn't help.
Also, before I reinstalled, after minimizing a window, there was
no icon for it at all, and there were no buttons on the panel for the open
programs, either. Any idea what could cause this?
My machine is running RedHat 6.0, and all RPMs are from the CD:
switchdesk-gnome-1.7.0-1
gnome-linuxconf-0.22-1
gnome-audio-1.0.0-6
gnome-libs-1.0.8-8
gnome-core-1.0.4-34
gnome-pim-1.0.7-2
gnome-utils-1.0.1-6
gnome-media-1.0.1-3
gnome-users-guide-1.0.5-4rh
gnome-games-1.0.2-10
I would appreciate any help, either posted or emailed. Thanks.

If your modem is a WinModem then it won't work.

You have to mount a device before you can access it. Check your
/etc/fstab file and see if you have the device defined. You should see
something like:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0
If you see this then at the command line type"
mount /mnt/cdrom
Once the cdrom is mounted you can hunt for .rpm files. When you find what
you want you can install it by typing
rpm -Uvh WhatIWantToInstall.i386.rpm

RedHat has a sndconfig program which should help you in this regard. You may
have to install it.

Typically you don't. You can run it from the command line, or set up
the menu(s) in your window manager to run it.

Linux can be a bit daunting when you first encounter it. It's a great
ego buster. It took me about 3 months to get comfortable with it. But I
will say the view is definitely worth the climb. Stick with it. Suddenly
everything will fall into place.
RedHat 6.0 is what I use. It is a very good distribution as far as I can
tell...
