Somewhere is a library file that contains the actual implementation of
gtk_sheet_new and gtk_sheet_get_type. This needs to be linked against.
If you look at all those lines above such as "-lm", these are
abbreviations for those libs. "-lm" is short for "libm", "-ldl" is short
for "libdl", "-lgtk" is short for "libgtk". Somewhere is a lib, e.g.,
libsomething.so, you would add "-lsomething" to the list for it. You can
view the symbols of most libs via nm, e.g., to see what is in some lib,
cd to its directory, and use: "nm libwhatever.so"; pipe it to grep if
you want to search for gtk_sheet, e.g.: "nm libwhatever.so | grep
gtk_sheet". What would make it easy is if someone knows what lib the
gtk_sheet_new and gtk_sheet_get_type are from.

Hi!
Can anyone help me with the Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX PCI card (tlan in
Linux's case)?
Actually windows poicks up the irq 10, but when i give some other irq to
linux (10 in this case) all it says is that "Can't open eth0 because IRQ 0
is already in use".
Thankyou.

Clients send me stuff in whatever format they're most comfortable with. I
accept it as a matter of courtesy. Some of them can be reducated, some
cannot, at least without having their feathers ruffled. Here in America we
have a saying, "The customer is always right." It may or may not be true,
but it's generally expected that you act as if it is. If you don't, people
will think you're arrogant or insolent, that you lack a service-oriented
attitude, and make a point not to do business with you. So, you don't tell
your customers what to do, even if you're dead right, and they're morons.
It's a matter of respect, and whether it's deserved or not, it's customary.

can still be a few things: might be updatedb running (scheduled once a day
on most distro's), but it might also be your swap running. When pages aren't
used for so long, they get swapped out to free up memory. This is done so
new applications load quicker(less swapping to be done, so less overhead)and
since the pages weren't used they probably aren't to be used for a long
time. And sometimes, since there is nothing else to do, the swap space gets
defragmented, just like the memory.
If you want to check (for somethingelse), write a little script that checks
alle the used files (fuser) and writes the results in a sort of log, might
be usefull..

Subject: installing new 2.4 kernal
Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 07:28:04 GMT
I compiled the new kernal last night and the process proceeded smoothly, no
errors in any of the steps. this left me with a kernal bzImage in
/linux/arch/i386/boot and a file vmlinux in /linux. I tried to update lilo
to both of these, bzImage first as stated in the README file. ran lilo to
update configuration and tried to boot. I was presented with an option to
boot to the new tag of linux-2.4 and when I did, i got booting kernal and
nothing else. No error message or anything. I have tried to compile the new
kernal many different times w/ many different methods and I always get the
same thing. No error message, just a hangup. Any ideas as to what I'm doing
wrong? I have been able to compile the 2.2 kernal from source the exact
same way with no problems.

Subject: Where to put xmodmap call to change pointer bindings (Gnome)?
System: RH7, Gnome (gdm), MouseMan Wheel
In order to get my mouse working properly, I need to rebind my mouse
pointers using "xmodmap -e 'pointer = 1 6 3 2 4 5'".
I already have a .Xmodmap I use to tweak my keyboard (called from my
.gnomerc using 'xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap). Adding 'pointer = ...' to that
file did not help; when I log into X, the pointer bindings are still
set to the default. I get the same result when I add a separate
call to xmodmap to .gnomerc and when I add such a call to the gnome
startup programs. Once I log in, and call xmodmap from a console
window, the rebindings do work.
So where can I put that call and have my pointer buttons rebound
automatically when logging in?

yeah, 'LI' it says because it is only loaded partially, install lilo without
an external text file (worked for me). Lilo boots in different stages, the
first stage prints out LI, then comes the second, but if this stage cannot
be found, it hangs while LI is displayed.. (or something like that for realy
knowledge, ask a guru). allso avoid putting lilo in master boot records but
if linux is the only system on your disk you might, but it is a little more
tricky since more things can go wrong..

I doubt it.
The LI could occur.
Not being able to find a boot signature, means you
didn't install LILO there at all.

Yep ,
`/sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hd[a-z]`
would be useful.
PS. did you run lilo, with the "boot=" flag pointing to /dev/hda ??
(`cat /etc/lilo.conf `: post that too)

If you lwould prefer a GUI based program - get hold of the tkcvs
package. Although this is meant to enhance CVS (Concurrent Versioning
System - for source code management) it comes with the tkdiff program
which I think is great. I am not sure if tkdiff is available on its own
as I use tkcvs anyway so haven't checked.

I agree. You know that and I know that....but 'they' don't know that. I
have to deal with 'they'.
I've done the push-back thing before....and it isolates you eventually
from some people you need to be able to communicate readily with. If I
am going to argue with people at all, it is NOT going to be about this.
:-)
HTML is reasonably consistent for paragraphing, lists and graphics
inclusion and placement.....which is what I mainly get from some
people.....I'm not sure they even know how to turn it off. I don't have
the time to teach them all...
Thanks for your advice....

Normally it's:
Channel 1, Master: hda
Channel 1, Slave: hdb
Channel 2, Master: hdc
...
So you linux disk would probably be hdf if attached as slave on IDE3.
For the purposes of LILO, you'll probably want it on the MBR of your
boot drive
(probably the WinMe disk).
So you'd want to install LILO on /dev/hde (the WinME disk's MBR),
and add 2 boot configurations in lilo.conf:
one 'other' on hde1 (or whatever partition on the winme disk is marked
as active),
labeled 'winme' or somesuch, and one labeled linux with root pointing to
/dev/hdfx, where x is the number of the partition / is mounted on.
If you're using a recent kernel (2.4x), you could also enable the 'swap
IDE'
configuration option; this swaps IDE1/2 and IDE3/4, so your disks would
be
hda and hdb, as if they were connected to the regular IDE controller.

Perhaps I'll try that. They used to send the "official buletin" of the
university to every address on campus in excel format. I had a cronjob
sending it back, plus ascii translation, plus a note telling them that
it had been published on the news server at such and such, and that
they could just send out an abstract and a reference instead of the
whole thing to everyone.
It took about 9 months, but they eventually started sending them in
plain text at least! I'm not sure they grokked that you only had to
click on the link in the mail to see the full thing.
