1) try to figure out, whether the gcc-package is installed on your machine
rpm -qa | grep gcc
2) it seems that gcc-packages are not shiped with RH6,
you can find them on the RH6-mirrors under "contrib"
3) try making a "real" boot disk for linux,
under RH6: mkbootdisk --device <floppy device> <kernel-version>
e.g.: mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.7
Good luck!

I host a web site that I hope to use to promote Linux. I'm curious
as to what the Linux community thinks of the idea of offering 1000+
Linux programs all on one CD for a very low price. The CD is currently
available at http:/www.gnuware.com/ Is it something that looks viable
and is worth the price? One concern has been that people outside the US
might not want to spend much time trying Linux because of lengthy
download time. I have lived several years outside the US and have found
phone use to be expensive, yet the interest in Linux to be as great as
if not more than that here in the US. People might be put off by the
download time involved in trying out various Linux programs.
I've noticed one of the biggest criticisms about Linux is the lack
of software. I find this not to be the case and feel that a collection
of programs together in one place might still some of the criticism. The
programs are all current and the iso image for burning is updated
nightly. CD are burned upon request and can also be custom tailored to
suit individual needs.
I would like some feedback.

Subject: setup kmail to leave messages on server
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 11:11:43 -0500
Is there a way to setup kmail so it leaves a copy of messages on your pop
server so you can receive them at another location, but does not download
the messages again in kmail. I like to receive my email at home and at
work, and it is easy to setup Outlook/Express to leave a copy of messages on
server. However, when I checked that option in Kmail, everytime I check for
messages it downloads the same messages again.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Cornel,
I tried it the way you said, but it won't work.
I wrote also a line like this on the syslog.conf of the logginghost:
x.x.x.x.* /var/log/client1.log
But that won't work either.
On another test, i took a "Intel LanRover"-RemoteAccess-Box. On that box, i
can enter a logging host (ip) and a priority ( local0-7 ).
i entered ateh ip of the logging host and choose as priority local7.
on the logging host i wrote in the syslog.conf:
local7.debug /var/log/ras.log
then started the syslogd with the -r option.
but without the success of getting logging messages of the remoteaccess-box.
then i tried:
x.x.x.x.debug /var/log/ras.log
then started the syslogd with the -r option.
but it's the same , no messages.

To add salt to injury, you cannot use exceptions in global static objects
because their constructors are executed before main(), and therefore
cannot catch the exception.
Furthermore, using virtual functions in constructors/destructors can
result in member functions being executed on uninitialized objects.
I've also found it more difficult to debug C++ than C (especially the
code of other people,) because (operator) overloading can make otherwise
innocent looking code do much more than you had expected.
Another poster replied to the above quote, but saying that it can be
managed by the Factory pattern. I agree, and want to add that the
Factory pattern can be implemented in C too.

Hello,
I have just set up this card, so I have a couple of suggestions. First, go to
http://www.alsa-project.org/ read the faq and how-to then download the newest
released version, they are up to version 0.4.0. Next as suggested in the
fact, download and install Alsa-libs-0.4.0 and Alsa-utils-0.4.0 also.
After all 3 are installed go to the alsa-driver source directory and under
the utils directory and run "./alsasound detect" then run "modprobe
snd-card-trid4dwave" and "modprobe snd-pcm1-oss" now run "xamixer2" use it to
unmute and adjust the volume for at least the Master and PCM settings and
everything else you would like to unmute. Also under the alsa-driver source
directory run the "./snddevices" script. Now run "alsactl store" to save
these setting to your alsasound.conf file. You should be able to play sounds
now:)
My conf.modules is set more simply than yours, since alsa seems to autoprobe
the details from the trident card.
##********************************************* #OSS-lite emulation alias
snd-card-1 snd-pcm1-oss alias snd-card-0 snd-card-trid4dwave pre-install
pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start #restore asound.conf settings after
trident initiation post-install snd-card-trid4dwave /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
##*********************************************
This works well for me. Remeber after the install your card is muted by
default.

Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 10:01:13 -0400
While it appears that the actual mail files themselves are not portable,
the address book and the book marks can be either: accessed from one
operating system on a given partition to another, or the files simply
"exported" via floppy, email, or even accross partitions, to be used in
another operating system. I keep my address books and bookmarks on
OS/2, Linux and Win9x synchronized this way in Netscape.
Unfortunately, my ISP does not offer IMAP4 as a mail system, but only
POP3. IMAP would solve the problem you and the rest of us are
experiencing. With IMAP, the files can stay on the mail server, and
accessed by any of your mailclients, at any time, even repeatedly.
Best Regards

I installed a third hard disk on a Dell Optiplex XMT 120 as a slave to
the cdrom some months ago. The system runs fine but boot time is over 5
minutes. This has not been a problem until now but I am going to move
the box to a place where it will be turned on and off regularly. As a
result of earlier advice I changed the master/slave relationship between
the 3rd drive and the cd drive but that has had no effect on boot time.
The output of fdisk -l is:
bash# fdisk -l

What type of printing do you want or need to do? It's very simple to do printing
via a parallel port, simply start up "control-panel &" from out of an xterm and
then put in the necessary data. Or you can use "linuxconf &". If you want to
print though a Windows box, start up samba and add some extra lines. Simple
enough. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line. I'm sure all
the others who have answered your posts would be willing to assist as well.

It is not clear exactly what you tried and what the error messages
said.
If you boot a rescue version of Linux, say from a Linux boot floppy
made with mkbootdisk (which you should have if you installed RH5.2
properly), you can run the Linux fdisk. The command would be
fdisk /dev/hdb
for the second disk, assuming both drives are IDE drives on the
same cable, but substitute what is appropriate for your configuration.
If it can't see the disk partition information, the most likely
explanation is that the master boot record on the second disk
got corrupted. You can probably restore the MBR with Partition Magic
or by using the DOS/Windows/NT fdisk. The usual way to restore
the MBR for the first drive is
fdisk /mbr
but I'm not sure how to do it for the second drive; probably
you have to include an argument telling which drive you want
to work with. If you run fdisk with Windows running, it
presumably won't let you change the MBR for the first disk from
which it is running, but be specially careful that you know
what you are doing so you don't mess up the MBR on the first
disk. I would be surprised if Partition Magic can't do it, and
that would probably be the best way to go if possible.

Hi,
You need kernel support for your card. Right now I use 2.2.10, sound
support compiled as module, and my /etc/conf.modules file (the relevant
part) loooks like this:
alias sound sb
options -k sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1
I don't have midi support since all I want is to listen to CDs and to
talk through the net with my friend 9 timezones away.

It should be in /usr/src/linux/scripts/ksymoops -- if you really don't
