Red Hat users dont even have this problem!
Ive been using Red Hat4.2 since Aug97, ive installed it on several comps
inc RH5.1 and havent had this problem.
My pc has been up 1 week 4 days 9 hours 20 minutes since the last power
failure, and its was just running at 99% mem usage and 100% swap space usage
15 mins ago, and didnt even crash (was a bit slow, drawing the screen tho).
You def have a PROBLEM, in hardware, or drivers. This is NOT typical of Linux
either RH,Slack,or any other disto, remember theyre all Linux :)
Look at the logs (/var/log/messages) and see if you can spot anything.
Are you in X, or cli when this happens?
For us to help, we need more info. good luck

At least under Solaris 2.6 and HP-UX 10.20 (and Linux, I think), if root
creates a file in a user's directory the user can remove it regardless of
the permissions, presumably because the user owns the directory.

I have a new 13 GB hard drive and I'd like to move some stuff around and I
want to know the best way of going about it. I currently have Win98 and
the MBR w/ LILO on the Primary-Master, and Redhat Linux 6.0 on the Primary
Slave. I'd like to insert the new drive as Primary-Master w/ the MBR and
Win98. On the second drive (originally primary master) I'd like to have
Linux. I'd also like to increase the size of the linux partitions with
the changeover. I'm still not sure whether or not I'll still use the old
slave drive or not. What should I do? Re-install? Change the fstab
before moving everything? Re-install LILO after I'm done moving?
Thanks,
Dave

Use the "setup" mode on your system to configure the system BIOS.
Look for an option like:
"PNP operating system ? win95/98 = YES; msdos/nt = NO
Set this to "NO"

Network printing in RH is based on the BSD Unix LPR print system. What
this means is that you must specify a computer or printer that is
running it's own print spooling system that is compatible with the LPR
protocol. The "Printer Server Name" means a computer on the network
which is running the LPR compatible print system. The "Print Queue Name"
means the name of the Print Que on the Print Server that you wish to
print to. There could be many if you are talking to a Print Server. On
the other hand; if you are using something like an HP printer with a Jet
Direct card in it you can use the TCP/IP name of the printer (or the IP
for that matter if you can't ping the DNS Name). And you can usually use
either HP_PRINTER or RAW as the Print Queue Name. Other Network Print
Servers work similarly but you will have find out what they call there
own print Queues.
So you see, there is no Win9X terminology and if you want to print over
a network using Linux you need to learn and speak Linux terms not
Windows terms. There are thousands of documents and more than one HowTo
that explains all this.

RHX (where X<=6.0) comes with an old tulip.c than doesn't work well with
the Netgear cards. Eg, the tulip.c with RH6.0 is dated 5/23/98. I use one
dated 2/99 and everything works fine. Go get you a newer one at:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.html
You'll need to compile it and replace tulip.o with the newly compiled
module.

Tk is great and there are interfaces for most interpreted languages.
You won't be able to write your program by dragging things around with
the mouse, though.
I feel obligated to post my advocacy for the Perl interface since
nobody else has yet and I strongly object to the white-space syntax

StarOffice seems to have a track of record of being difficult to
install. Last year, I gave up installing 4.0 after many hours of futile
trial-and-error. Since StarOffice5.0 is included as part of application
package in RH 6.0, I tried to install it through RPM after successfully
installing and configuring RH6. The install onto /opt dir went smoothly.
However, I have absolutely no idea where main programs were located
after install except invoking electrial eye and kdeicon editor. After
reading ReadMe file, I executed the soffice script file in /bin. It
started a more fancy graphical install procedure like what you see in
win95 and asked a few questions including s/n, options, et al. Again,
the install onto /root dir was successfully completed. When I checked
two folders under two different directory, the contents are very similar
with minor differences. Again, I could not use it. Does anyone know how
to verify if install is successful ? and how to use it?

Hey, I have a VM question. I haven't tried it yet but am interested in
checking it out. I was wondering if VM will work with a currently
installed Winbloze partition. I'm imagine it will, but thought I'd run it
by everyone. In other words, I just upgraded to a 20.4GB HD (quite a
change from my 2.2GB drive ;) ) and am going to allocate half to Linux and
half to, well, you know. If I do the installs, then install VM, can I tell
it to use Win off the other half of my drive? That way, if I want to run
either os at full speed, I can do a dual boot. If I'm in Linux and just
need Win for something quick I don't have to reboot. With my 2.2GB drive I
run Linux exclusively and pretty much just want Win to play games and play
around with Macromedia Dreamweaver (which doesn't have a Lin version and
doesn't work correctly under wine). Also, I have no idea what I'd do with
all 20GB under Linux ;) (well, I'm sure I could figure something out
eventually).

Having a problem I hope some one can help me with.
I installed red hat linux 5.2 on a system with following properties
1- 3 gig drive /hda
1-7 gig drive /hdd
hda has win98
hdd is split with the first half being for Win and the second half for linux
with 4 partitions
hdd5 is the root
I first tried installing so lilo was in the boot of hda1
the screen filled with 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01
and lilo never starts (luckily I had a boot disk which works fine)
I then Installed a commercial boot manager to the system and my win sesion
works fine with it, but it won't boot the hdd5 drive either
so I moved lilo to hdd5 and tried again...
every time I booted to lilo it filled my screen with 01 01 01 01 01

If your system already has glibc, why don't you update using RPMs?
If your system does _not_ already have glibc, have you considered
what drastic things you may be doing? See
http://www.imaxx.net/~thrytis/glibc/Glibc2-HOWTO.html.
Anyway, glibc-2.1.1 predates the existence of gcc-2.95. You should
use either gcc-2.95 and glibc-2.1.2pre3 (from sourceware.cygnus.com),
or egcs-1.1.2 (from egcs.cygnus.com) and glibc-2.1.1.

I tried and tried to load the module into the kernel, but
I ended up reinstalling Red Hat and clicking `Yes` at the
`Do you want to set up a LAN connection` part. My ethernet
card was detected by the auto-probe and I expect that the
appropriate module was either loaded into the kernel at
install time because all I had to do from them on was to
specify IP address, DNS nameserver and so on, and when I
ran linux after the install I could ping just about everyone

The problem seems to be in attempting to load a module for

The card is not on board, BTW.

Hi Josh,
Install Linux anyway (hmm, 5.2 is a little old, don't u think ?).
Then, add this line to /etc/conf.modules
alias eth0 driver
where driver is the name of the module for youe nic.
Hope that will help

Well hear is the deal. My program is X based and
uses some third party libraries(I dont know if
that is relevant). When I run it it will pop
up a display similar to netscape with different
menus etc. Now this works fine on the version
of linux(or the version of system libraries I
linked to ) that I built this on. Unfortunately
I cannot rebuild. On the version of linux
(or system libraries ) that I have now, it does
not work. Here is what happens. The program reaches
the point where it is supposed to open
the window on x display and then hangs forever.
I cannot even *kill* it. It seems to be in some
uninterruptible state. Needless to say the display
never comes up. However this happens
regardless of the display. i.e. when I run it
with the command line option to use only ascii
display, it still hangs forever.
I suspect that I may not be using the right C
libraries. When I installed this new linux I
distinctly remember reading that the glibc
package had changed. Or maybe all the system
libraries have changed? If I can obtain the
old system libraries is there any way I could
get this to work? What do you(or anyone else )
suggest? FYI, when I do a strings on the executable
and grep for lib, I get the following
/lib/ld-linux.so.2
libX11.so.6
libg++.so.2.7.2
libstdc++.so.2.7.2
libm.so.6
libc.so.6
__libc_init_first
Hope someone has a solution.
Many thanks,
