Subject: Can only use sound card as root?!?
Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 20:48:43 -0400

Yesterday evening I finally got around to upgrading my
system
from RedHat 5.2 to 6.0. So far I have been far less than
impressed... I haven't seen any really compelling new FEATURES
available to me, yet I have had to re-install KDE from scratch
and deal with a host of other problems.

One of the problems that I haven't been able to solve is
my
sound card (an ESS 1688 AudioDrive). As it stands right now...
the sound works absolutely fine when I am logged in as root, but
does not work at all when logged in as an ordinary user.
Applications give me such error messages as "cannot open output
device"... all leading me to the conclusion that my system no
longer has it's permissions set for normal users to access the
sound card.

The only problem is, I have absolutely no clue whatsoever
as to
where I need to go, or what changes need to be made, in order to
allow permissions of the sound card for everyone. Anyone else
know the easy answer to this problem? Thanks!

Hi!

Try to add something like the following to your /etc/conf.modules
*****************
pre-install bttv modprobe -k tuner=20
options i2c verbose=3D1 scan=3D1 i2c_debug=3D0
options tuner debug=3D0 type=3D0
options bttv pll=3D0 radio=3D0 card=3D0
******************
Line 1 loads the tuner automatically prior to the bttv module
Line 2-4 configures the different modules used by bttv. I had to download=
 the
bttv package to find documentation for this. My sound doesn't work. I sus=
pect
that the bttv drivers don't give sound with the bt878 board _yet_, at lea=
st the
README files say something about not fully working DMA sound with the bt8=
78.
I have used kwintv for KDE. It seems to work fine, except for the sound
problem.
Here is the MODULE file that followed the bttv package, and explains
the module parameters:
******************
There are quite lot modules out here...

videodev.o
=09this is the basic video4linux module, all video
=09drivers (incl. bttv) register themself here.

i2c.o
=09the generic i2c module. It does much of the i2c bus
=09management, all other modules (except videodev.o)
=09use this one

=09insmod args:
=09=09scan=3D1=09=09scan the bus for i2c devices
=09=09verbose=3D0=09shut up i2c
=09=09i2c_debug=3D1=09for debugging, it sticks the whole
=09=09=09=09(software) i2c bus traffic to the
=09=09=09=09syslog

bttv.o
=09the bt848 (grabber chip) driver

=09insmod args:
=09=09remap=3Dadr remap Bt848 memory to adr<<20=09=09
=09=09vidmem=3Dbase=09frame buffer address>>20 (of graphic card)
=09=09triton1=3D0/1 for Triton1 compatibility
                                Triton1 is automatically recognized
but this might also help with other chips=
ets
=09=09pll=3D0/1/2=09pll settings
=09=09=090: don't use PLL
=09=09=091: 28 MHz crystal installed
=09=09=092: 35 MHz crystal installed
=09=09radio=3D0/1=09card supports radio
=09=09card=3Dn=09=09card type
=09=09=090: Auto-Detect
=09=09=091: Miro
=09=09=092: Hauppauge (old bt848 boards)
=09=09=093: STB
=09=09=094: Intel
=09=09=095: Diamond
=09=09=096: AVerMedia
=09=09=097: MATRIX Vision MV-Delta
=09=09=098: FlyVideo
=09=09=099: TurboTV
 =09=09=0910: Hauppauge (new bt878 boards)
=09=09=0911: MIRO PCTV pro
=09=09=0912: Terratec/Vobis TV-Boostar
=09=09=0913: Newer Hauppauge WinCam (bt878)

=09=09=0917: PXC200
=09=09=0918: AVermedia98
=09=09=0919: FlyVideo98 (newer FlyVideo cards)

=09remap, card, radio and pll accept up to four comma-separted arguments
=09(for multiple boards). The CARD and PLL defines from the Makefile
=09are used as defaults.

msp3400.o
=09The driver for the msp34xx sound processor chips. If you have a
=09stereo card, you probably want to insmod this one.

=09insmod args:
=09=09debug=3D1/2=09print some debug info to the syslog,
=09=09=09=092 is more verbose.

tea6300.o
=09The driver for the tea6300 fader chip. If you have a stereo
=09card and the msp3400.o doesn't work, you might want to try this
=09one. This chip is seen on most STB TV/FM cards (usually from
=09Gateway OEM sold surplus on auction sites).

=09insmod args:
=09=09debug=3D1=09=09print some debug info to the syslog.

tda8425.o
=09The driver for the tda8425 fader chip. This driver used to be
=09part of bttv.c, so if your sound used to work but does not
=09anymore, try loading this module.

=09insmod args:
=09=09debug=3D1=09=09print some debug info to the syslog.

tuner.o
=09The tuner driver. You need this unless you want to use only
=09with a camera or external tuner ...

=09insmod args:
=09=09debug=3D1=09=09print some debug info to the syslog
=09=09type=3Dn=09=09type of the tuner chip. n as follows:
=09=09=090: Temic PAL tuner
=09=09=091: Philips PAL_I tuner
=09=09=092: Philips NTSC tuner
=09=09=093: Philips SECAM tuner
=09=09=094: no tuner
=09=09=095: Philips PAL tuner
=09=09=096: Temic NTSC tuner
=09=09=097: Temic PAL tuner

i2c_chardev.o
=09provides a character device for i2c bus access. Works for 2.1.x
=09only, not compiled by default.

To load the tuner+msp3400 modules with kerneld/kmod, you should use
"modprobe -k tuner; modprobe -k msp3400" in pre-install for bttv.

Oh boy are you in for a treat. I did the
same thing and it took me forever to
figure out how, but the satisfaction
was immense when I finally figured it
out. First, brush up on kernel building
by carefully reading the kernel "how -
to's" once you have a grip on that
build your kernel and ensure that
generic scsi support is built in, select
yes to emulate scsi, ensure ide cdroms
are disabled, and say no to "probe all
LUN's". Build and install the kernal and
add the following line to /etc/lilo.conf
append="hd(x)=ide-scsi"

ensure x=the device that is your cd
rom writer....no parentheses. i.e.
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
c being the secondary master on the
ide chain

Good luck to you. I'm probably not the
best guy to get advice from on this
subject but I'll guarantee you that if I
can do it then most anybody else in
the world can as well.

Login Manager is controlled by:
/etc/inittab
at the bottom of this file there is an entry like:
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/xdm -nodaemon

xdm =gnome,
find the file kdm [=KDE],
and replace the path to point to it !
reboot - and it works

Personally I'd suggest VNC. That way you can use Windows, Linux, a Mac,
Digital Unix, Solaris, etc all pretty transparently. (eg from Linux you
could use your Windows box, etc). It's completely free, too.

do you see this problem on your root account or a user account ? I was
able to connect when root but saw the same problem on user account.

try this (if using kppp):

run midnight commander and check kppp privileges. Also, look in options
file in /etc/ppp and remove "lock" (if there).

If you have a telnet line in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf, editing
the line in /etc/inetd.conf to start telnet in debug mode. See
