If the data cannot be interpreted, then what is the use of parsing it? If a
propertary data file were converted to text as a Radix-64 or uuencoded data
stream and is framed by valid tags it is still no more useful that what we
have today. If in fact it would be less useful, processing it would be
slower and it would consume more storage and other resources than otherwise
needed.

Of what value is a universal file format is the data can not be intreperted
bay any than the programs that created them? The encryption that I was
referring to was not to protect the user's data or other assets, it was
encryption to keep the actual file format propertary and both be able to
claim they are using XML and to circumvent its potiential benefits at the
same time.
Remember UniForm? It was one of the prior attempts to create a universal
file format. How many files do you have that are still in that format? I
have not seen any for more than a decade. That was only one of that many
take became very popular for a short time until reality reared it head.
Perhaps I am jaded by experience, but everything that is being stated as a
benefit of XML has been said in the part in realation to all the prior
formats as well. For me this is nothing new, but what astounds me is they
way so many seem to fail to remember the past and think they are developing
such a great thing that has never been done before.

Or one could install Communicator 4.74 128bit. It's much improved stability

Mandrake 7.1 installed Lyx (and KLyx, though the latter seems to
be one version behind Lyx?). I spent the weekend printing the help files
(aka, manuals) for Lyx. (K)Lyx looks to be a reasonable tool for routine
Latex usage -- not WYSIWYG, but not at the level of having to code the

hi
i've noticed that if i accidentally try to write to a write-protected
floppy disk, and then unprotect the disk, i'm still unable to write to
it. everytime i try to do a write, i get a "read-only filesystem" error.
this happens even if i explicitly mount the disk with the "-o rw"
option. the only thing that seems to work is rebooting.
how can i get around this problem?

I don't know for sure but I don't see why not. I don't think they
need any special support by the OS to function.

???
(write protect floppy disk)
$ mount /floppy
$ cp crud /floppy
cp: cannot create regular file `/floppy/crud': Read-only file system
$ umount /floppy
(eject and un-write-protect floppy)
$ mount /floppy
$ cp crud /floppy
(works OK)
If you eject the floppy without umounting it, the kernel will get
confused since it receives a disk-change signal while the filesystem is
mounted. This makes the kernel set the filesystem read-only for safety
reasons, and it won't let you mount it read-write until you umount it
and remount it again.

Hi, any help appreciated.......
I'm currently using Gentus Linux GPL v3.0 with a dual Celeron ABIT BP-6
motherboard. I am using a boot floppy to boot into the system. My
regular LILO gets stuck at LI....and died. I'm using ATA66 harddisks
(and they are detected properly once we pass the initial boot sequence),
and i believe the kernel is already specially compiled in the CD to run
with ATA66.
Am I missing something? There is also a problem when i use upgrade
option in the Gentus CD to upgrade to a higher version Linux(such as
from Gentus v1.0 to Gentus v3.0). It always get stuck, i suspect the
installer was unable to properly read the harddisk geometry.....and i
have to install as fresh. :-(
Thank you for any help.
Regards
Damon
P.S. - Gentus distro is very similar to RedHat distro(actually i
believe it's exactly alike except with kernel compiled to handle UDMA
and some other special drivers).

If you want the Linux box to be a firewall/NAT box, you really should
have 2 network cards in it. You can pick up net cards for cheap these
days--see if you can find a 3Com 509 ISA card as it's easy to set them
up and they're reliable and very cheap. If you're only using 2
machines, you don't even need a hub.
DSL Router <--> Linux box eth0
Linux box eth1 <--xover--> Lose98 box
The problem is most likely that the Linux box has a service-assigned IP
address that is *NOT* in the 192.168.0.0 network. Your Lose98 machine
will not be able to see the Linux machine's Ethernet adapter unless you
do stupid things with Lose98's netmask, which is not reccommended. You
should have a look at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO.html
since that's exactly what you need to do here....

Isn't this what "nice" and "renice" are for ("man -k nice")? Or must

As far as I am aware, this is exactly what "nice" and "renice" are
for. See "man nice" and "man renice" - or even "man -k nice". Let the
operating system take care of it if you can, because it saves you coding
it!
On one of my systems there are two versions of the SETI@home program
running continuously. Each uses about 14MiB of the total of 48MiB.
When the system load gets high, their niceness of 19 means that their
priorities drop, and the kernel swap daemon moves them out to disc. (Or
something like that.) However it works, it does work.
I hope this helps.

First thing to check is cables and termination. If you've got scsi
disks and just added the tape, it is likely that your terminator is not
the last thing on the cable any more, or that you've got a disk with a
terminator pack installed in the middle of the cable.

Nearly all local/regional ISP's work fine with Linux. Most of the
national ones too, you just can't use their silly software bundle and
sometimes you might have to find a Windows machine to sign up from.
Most aren't free though.
Except for AOL, and the free ones that want to shove ads in your face,
it is actually unusual for an ISP to not work with a particular OS.
