Help,
I've got a Red Hat 6 system, and I've installed qmail and vpopmail,
everything appears to be working for sending and receiving mail, but for
some reason, no matter what I try, I can't authenticate my users. I've
followed all the instructions, but it still gives me an Authorisation
failed message. Something like this.
Sep 23 17:29:38 athena vchkpw[1194]: Failed login attempt with unknown

Any clues ??

KDE/GNOME are both resource hogs.
I don't know too much about enlightenment.
On my systems, I use "AnotherLevel" (aka fvwm2) as my window manager. I
configure it for the "Lesstif" (mwm clone) look. It works reasonably
well on my 486/40 (with 40M RAM).
If you want to go for the smallest footprint, twm is probably your
choice.
Needless to say, Lesstif and twm don't have all the gee-whiz features
that enlightenment/KDE/GNOME provide. You have to decide if you want
features or speed. I prefer speed.

No. These are normal ppp negotiation. If you don't want them to show in
/var/log/messages, edit your /etc/syslog.conf so it doesn't log daemon.debug
messages to /var/log/messages, and send HUP to syslogd.

Not sure on this. I don't know what your scripts (ddup, etc) do. For my
installation, I use the defaultroute & usepeerdns pppd options, and get
ip-up to add the nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf. I pinched the code from
the /usr/doc/ppp*/scripts directory.

I have PII 233Mhz system (multiple SCSI / IDE drives, 98MB RAM) running
Slackware kernel 2.0.36. I've allocated a 120MB partition to as swap and
have it automatically utilized a system bootup via the /etc/fstab entry.
When my system gets tearing, it can really eat into the system memory.
Sometimes it freeze or start running slowly because it never utilizes
the swap space when it's used up the free memory. when I type the "free"
command, it shows the though memory is used up and still the swap space
( which regesters in the output of that same command ) nevers gets used.
I utilized partitions on other drives, to ensure that the first was not
bad, to no avail. Is there anything special I need to do get the swap to
be utilized once physical memory is used up ? I've tried manually
running the swapon/off commands also to no avail. Has anyone run into
this ? If so, how did you fix it ? Thanks.

exists? If not, perhaps this is Yet Another Use(tm) for Linux

the difference is that
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH /opt/SYBSasa6/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
is Bourne style syntax. Used in things like Bourne shell,
Korn shell, Bourne Again shell (bash)...
The other method is for csh style syntax. Used in things
like the csh, tcsh,...
Also note that the setenv command above is missing a "$"
that should be prepended to the second LD_LIBRARY_PATH,
and that you should probably run ldconfig after adding
or removing stuff in /etc/ld.so.conf.

Has anyone heard of such a thing as a "Microsoft Bob"-style

the idea goes well with linux's goal of being super-customizable.

Opposite to the way my system works. On mine profile and .profile are only
executed
on login or when a term is manually specified to be a "login" terminal (E.G.
"xterm -ls"). .bashrc
executed on any new xterm, any invocation of bash as "bash" but not as "sh."

I am looking at the posts here and in other linux-related groups. Isn't
it true that 99% of the people posting and/or responding have to be a bit
technically savvy and a bit adventurous with their hardware? That's why
I'm so inclined to believe that there will always be a market for
WIndows, and a similar segment for Linux, and Mac, etc much like there
will always be rock n roll, jazz, polka, etc.
Maybe it's time we stop this 'Linux will eat M$ for breakfast!'
trash-talk. The reality is, the OS shouldn't be in your face, but instead
it's quietly humming in the background, and letting you accomplish your
work/objective. I'd like to think my kids will grow up using the computer
in far different ways, thanks to your efforts, and one day even ask, Daddy,
What was Windows? before she rushes off to the holodeck to play Quake23:

That said, this will surely make those 'Micro-scared' t-shirts

I can't speak to the Caldera 2.3 install, but having recently gone
through both the Caldera 2.2 and the RedHat 6.0 installs, I can say that
they've got different strengths. As far as Caldera is considered, I
never did make it all the way through the Lizard. Occasionally it would
crash at mouse or keyboard detection (I do not have unusual hardware)
and once it got all the way to installing all of the packages, but hung
at 51%. I checked Caldera's knowledge base and they noted that this
sometimes just happens (not in those exact words) and they've got their
people on it. I had to go through the LISA install for Caldera. It
wasn't too bad, really just about like the RedHat 6.0 install.
The two programs were really different when it came to configuration.
Caldera did a great job at setting up my internet connection (ethernet)
and my peripheral storage devices. Recognizing my ethernet card,
configuring sound, accessing my smb network drives, and connecting in a
meaningful way with the network printers was another thing entirely.
Some of it was rough, some nearly impossible. RedHat, on the other
hand, kicked up a stink over my peripheral storage devices and was a
pain to configure my network connection. However, hardware recognition,
printing, network drives, and multimedia config were a total breeze.
I've recommended Caldera to my husband for his computer at home, where
he doesn't have to mess with the Windows networking interfaces. RedHat
is what I use at the office.

For the monitor, not much I can tell you, except to read the manual and set the
vsync and hsync rates yourself. My video card is a sis 6326 also, which is a
pain in the arse to configure for X, if you dont know much about linux and X to

After you run XConfigurator (or XFSetup, or xconf, whatever your preference)
edit the /etc/XF86Config file, go down to the device section for the video
card, and enable these options:
VideoRam 8192 (or VideoRam 4096 if you have a 4MB SiS card)
Option "no_bitblt"
Option "sw_cursor"
Option "edo_vram"
Option "fast_vram"

Why a strange question? I already have cron jobs set up to dial in
each night to collect mail and news. I think you misunderstand my
question and assume I would not know how to set up such a simple thing.
As I said in my original question, my IP changes the telephone numbers
each weekend and I want a way of adding the correct number on a Friday
evening in a more elegant way than editing the chatscript. When I used
an IP which used the same number each weekend it was easy to have a cron
job which substituted the weekend number at midnight Friday and the
weekday number at midnight Sunday.

Warning. Many of the 56 K modems are winmodems and are useless for Linux.
It it needs a driver under Win, it is a winmodem.
If it is PCI tht is a very large probablility it is a winmodem. ...
