I am running RH6.1 on my Celeron 300A system. It seems that after
about 12 hours, my system goes into a coma mode. I can still use the
console, but email, web and telnet services stop. If I reboot the
system from the console, everything goes back to normal.

Any diagnostic hints?

Oh, I get it. Sorry, I'm stupid this week.

Amusingly, some newspaper (WSJ?) reported that "the slashdot effect is named
after the website of the same name, which is frequently overloaded". My
understanding had always been that it was the sites they *link* to which are
most likely to be overloaded. ;)

Subject: Mouse strangeness
Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 19:37:48 GMT

Anyone have any clues as to why a MS serial mouse will work fine (RH 6.1 w/
KDE desktop) but an MS PS2 mouse will not?

On bootup, Linux recognises, deconfigures the removed one and configures the
added one, going both directions. The problem is that the PS2 mouse will not
move the pointer properly (I've tried several and also booted from an MSDOS
diskette with mouse drivers and the mouse works fine there). The pointer goes
to the top of the screen and moves in a rather random fashion left and right
but will not move down the screen.

I'm pretty new at Linux (or is that Gnu) so any help would be appreciated.

I just discovered this too. It seems xf86config puts "IntelliMouse",

Hi there I second that and thanks for the ctrl-alt commands didn't know
them :)
I have a K6 2 350 13 Gig empty drive and no Windoze or Dos anywhere near
it :)
it took a while to install, and cound all my hardwhare except the zip
Drive.
It loaded OSS and it says it installed correctly but no sound.
soundcfg says it installed correctly and it finds the right sound card but
typing soundon gets me an error devices.cfg not found.
So far this is the only fly in the ointment of the install.
Otherwise it went smothly, found and installed my Vodoo 2 Banshee card
with out a hitch. (3dfx), on my last install that was a problem.
the only problem I am haveing is getting tech support from Corel :)

I think that Maya is one of the big boys toys when it comes to raytracing.

I havn't heard of any modellers that'll run on linux, but that's probably
because I'm a hand coder, Pov-Ray all the way for me.

You may get some more useful answers to this question if you ask in c.g.r.r

Unfortunately, I'd like that answer too! I have a Sony Superstation tape
drive that will backup 3 or 5 Megs (as much as 7.5 Megs, tho' not the 10
that they claim with the fictional 2:1 compression). It is fast and
trouble free on DOS but I have yet to figure out how to use it on Linux.
There is some indication that BRU might be usable but I am not disposed
to buy something that no-one has ever used with the Superstation drive,
AFAIK.

I am looking for a fax viewer with print capability for linux. Currently
I are using viewfax but I cannot print from it.

We are using mgetty/sendfax to receive the faxes on a linux system, then
it is uuencoded and e-mailed as mime document. I have added a custom
mimetype in /etc/mailcap so that metamail calls my script which decodes
the file and calls viewfax on it.

I am trying to switch our users from elm/cde mail to Netscape using
IMAP4. I was able to add application helper (my script) so that I can
view the fax, but I cannot print it.

Is there a way to associate a application helper for printing?
Is there a plug-in available for netscape to view fax?
Is there a fax viewer that will also allow me to print?

Thanks.

I'm afraid I do not really understand that comment in the context of faxing.

If you want to fax PDFs, just write a shell script that call ghostscript to
render them fax format images (TIFF G3, IIRC), then feed those to a Linux
fax system such as efax or mgetty-fax.

I tried BRU with the Colorado and it didn't detect the drive. It was the

It just seems somehow wrong to pay for a solution that should be as free as

Check out Promise's web site again. They have a
beta driver for RedHat. They note that it may
work under other versions of Linux, but you may
have to integrate it into the kernel yourself.

I have a related concern: can I use the Linux
tools to partition my disk? According to the
Promise web site, they only support fdisk and
format and warn that other tools may corrupt the
disk.

I've never tried moving from SCCS to RCS, but what I have done before is to
take SCO binaries of the SCCS commands, and run them on a Linux machine
using the IBCS2 kernel module.

;-) And here I though the original non-X GUI was Curses. . .

Subject: Awe64 Problems, help needed ;)
Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 17:05:10 -0500

This is a recent convo between an OSS guy...but he never emailed back
;) So I'm turning to you guys.

Me: It autodetects an Awe64 card. Fine. It also detects this dinky
PnP thing that crashes the system, so I remove it, and it still
works...kinda. The GMixer has a SoundBlaster mixer and an Awe32 mixer.
I want to use the Awe32 mixer, and I tell XMMS to USE the Awe32 mixer,
but only the SoundBlaster mixer changes the settings. If i try to
change the Awe32 mixer, nothing happens. The sound doesn't change. Any
idea why it won't detect the Awe64, and how I can tell OSS to use the
Awe32 mixer instead? I'd appreciate the help.

OSS guy: Do this: rm /dev/mixer; ln -s /dev/mixer1 /dev/mixer and now
you will be talking
to the AWE Equalizer device. ALternatively use /usr/lib/oss/ossmix -d1
and
then press enter and look at the channels.

His advice didn't work. My problem now is that I have two Awe32 mixers
in my mixer program, and neither of them work. I can still get sound
through the SB16 mixer, but I don't want that. It sounds like it's
coming from the inside of a styrofoam box. Any ideas? Oh, and the
PnP device that crashes upon probing and I had to remove is the CMI8330
Audio Adapter. When I try to run sndconfig, it sees this, and promptly
crashes when I hit "Ok" on that screen. Any ideas, anyone? I'd really
like to get this Awe mixer to work. Thanks in advance.

Chris

I typically make either 2 or 3 partitions for a linux distribution.
/
/usr
swap

This always used to be adequate, although with different distros putting
files in all different places any more, you need to watch carefully what
goes where, and utilize symbolic linking to your advantage. I'm not
sure if any of the distributions even consider the likely partition
configurations when they decide where they put the files. As for the
concepts of extended and logical partitions, one is the container
(extended) and the other is the actual mountable partition (logical
partition). For example, you can have up to 4 logical partitions on one
extended partition. You can't mount the extended partition, as it acts
kind of like a container for the logicals. Each logical is mountable
however. Win9x and DOS can only recognize one Primary partition, so if
you're dual booting with Win9x then you may wish to stick to this
limitation. WinNT and Linux are both capable of utilizing multiple
Primary partitions.
