Does this apply if my ISP uses dynamic ip addresses? A check in MSWindows'
dialup networking revealed that no DNS ip address is specified.

Failing to start pppd I found this in /var/log/messages:
"Aug 29 13:02:27 GOOFY modprobe: Can't locate module binfmt-0"

How can I fix this and what might cause such a failure?

I'm very unexperienced in linux so I tried this:

GOOFY:[rland] #rpm -V ppp
S.5....T c /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
S.5....T c /etc/ppp/ppp-off
SM5...GT c /etc/ppp/ppp-on
SM5...GT c /etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialer
.M....G. /usr/sbin/pppd
GOOFY:[rland] #

-> assuming no errors have been found...

and...

GOOFY:[rland] #locate binfmt
/lib/modules/2.0.35/fs/binfmt_aout.o
/lib/modules/2.0.35/fs/binfmt_java.o
/usr/doc/DLD/Linux/DOC/linux-kernel/kernel/binfm
gif
/usr/doc/DLD/Linux/LDP/LDP/tlk/kernel/binfmt.gif
/usr/lib/perl5/i586-linux/5.004/linux/binfmts.ph
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/fs/binfmt_aout.c
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/fs/binfmt_elf.c
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/fs/binfmt_em86.c
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/fs/binfmt_java.c
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/fs/binfmt_script.c
/usr/src/linux-2.0.35/include/linux/binfmts.h

What does "-0" in "binfmt-0" stand for? (a instance?)
Nevertheless I cannot find such a src file on HDD

I would be awfully grateful for some help.

Hello,
has someone an idea how to make a popup item
that removes all backupfiles (*~) from the marked directory.

This does not work:
{{Remove *~} {dsk_exec rm $(find -name '*~')}}

rm $(find -name '*~') does fine from the comandline...

Thanks Frank

Windows can handle dynamic ip addresses AND setting dynamic DNS addresses.
Linux couldn't (can it yet?) and you will need the IP addresses.

Can you access sites using ip addresses instead of domain names?

These are warnings that you can ignore - assuming you are using the -r
(Rock Ridge) option.

mkisofs has to create ISO9660 (8.3 style) names for each file - even if
you have given the -r option. When the CD is mounted on a Unix/Linux
box, you will see the (long) Rock Ridge file names, not the ISO9660
names.

The above message is just telling you that the ISO9660 name has been
changed.

This is detailed in the mkisofs man page

Though this server is primarily for Solaris/Windows it's is said in

Beowulf is not the answer, beowulf is a PVM parallel virtual machine just for
number crunching. There is no Clustering File System that would be reliable
enough for a RDBMS. They probably want 2 nodes working simultaniously to also do
loadsharing.

Subject: ipchains redirect
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 12:29:22 GMT

Please help me linux people, have had problem for weeks.
I have a dialup connection to internet (dynamic ip) on my linux box
which is the gateway to the web for my two win98 boxes.
I would like to be able to forward requests to the server
from the outside world on a specific port to one of my clients using
ipchains.
People have suggested:
ipchains -A input -p tcp -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/32 2401 -d 10.0.0.102/32 2401 -j
REDIRECT
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the internet ip of the server.
Should this work? If so what could be going wrong?
Also, it would be nice to be able to update my dynamic ip directly into the
chain.
Should I just grep ifconfig or is there a more elegant way?
Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to compile Sawfish. Sawfish requires librep and rep-gtk. The
latter (after much installing of other packages) still gives an error when I
run configure. It complains that it cannot find gdk-pixbuf-config even though
it is present in /usr/bin and this is on my path.

What do I need to do? I am running Mandrake 7.0

Not really. 500 MHz CPU's are more than most people really need, and
they only cost about $60. Even if the CPU was free, it wouldn't cost
much less for the whole computer.

Personally I don't have any use for anything much faster than about a
Pentium 233. That's when the machines started appearing pretty snappy
in a GUI to me. However, my new laptop is a 500. Because that's the
slowest thing I could buy.

99.9% of the time, it's waiting for me to type. A 286 could keep up
with that. However, it's nice having the 500 because it allows me to
play DVD movies for the kids in the hotel room. Sometimes you need
that power.

How much money could I save if I bought a car that could only go 60
MPH, because that's all the faster I need to go?

i created /dev/xconsole with "mknod xconsole p"

Subject: Problems with Big partitions?
Date: 4 Sep 2000 13:28:18 GMT

Hi,

I still have the problem I asked about time ago, that is, a big
partition (around 50 Gbytes) gives a lot of problems. I followed the
suggestion to upgreade the kernel from 2.2.12 (RH 6.1) to 2.2.16 without
any improvement. I tried to upgrade NFS too as it is possible the
problem is triggered by the fact that the filesystem is accessed by NFS
(even if it is mounted read-only). No success, after some time the
filesystem is unreadable both from NFS and from the local system, I can
umount it but it doesn't remount (it gives a "bad fs") and even fsck
cannot read it ("short read"). This keeps happening even after a reboot,
fsck, or even fdisk, can't read the partition . After a while I was able
to reread the disk (just retrying or maybe it was that I left the
machine off for a while resetting something?). I suppose one solution
could be to split the disk in two smaller partitions but I'd rather try
to avoid that as it could give problems organizing the content.

Summing up the hardware:

OS RedHat 6.1 (no X-win on a separate IDE disk)
with kernel 2.2.16 and nfs update
disc SEAGATE Model: ST150176LW
scsi Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra2 SCSI

the partition is (given by sfdisk -s /dev/sda1)
48845601
the filesystem is (given by df)
/dev/sda1 48078504 10178036 35458188 22% /vol00

Any suggestion?

Thanks,
       GianPiero

You need to read the configure log and the configure script, and
possibly fix the latter.

Or you could use ipmasqadm if you use a kernel >= 2.2.x. See

First, FreeBSD isn't Linux; FreeBSD is a BSD. You've therefore posted to
the wrong group.

Second, CD-R image files (aka "ISO images") are almost always used after
being burned to a CD. You do this using a CD-R package's "burn from
image file" option (or something similar; details vary a lot from one
package to another). If you have no CD-R or CD-RW drive, chances are you
have a big useless file on your hands. In that case, check with
http://www.cheapbytes.com or various others to buy an inexpensive
FreeBSD CD. It's conceivable that FreeBSD can install from a CD-R image
file on a FAT partition, but if so I don't know how to tell it to do so.
If I'm not mistaken, you can tell FreeBSD to install from an FTP server,
so if you've got a fast network connection, you could forget about
creating or buying a CD and just get a boot floppy image, create a boot
floppy, and install from the net.
