Works fine here. It could be that this host has'nt been synchronized in all
DNS servers on the net, that this problem can occur.

I have just found out that Freei, a free ISP with a banner, works! All
I did was create an account in kppp with the login, password, and phone
number. No other changes were needed. I was pleasantly surprised to
find it working. Interestingly, whenever I accessed Freei on windows,
it sucked, constantly cutting out and transmitting at a low speed. On
linux, it has been up for around 2 hours, and is running at 49K.

Try looking for the file ntfs.o under /lib/modules. Don't be surprised if
you don't find it - IIRC the module isn't included in RedHat's
distribution due to the module being crash prone.
If it's not there, you need to recompile the kernel (just the loadable
modules, actually) to get access to NTFS from Linux.

Does anyone know if there is an open source program that does the
same as RealPlayer? Especially if it can read RealPlayer datastreams?
The reason I ask is that one annoying thing about RealPlayer is that
it will only play a datastream as it is being connected to the stream
via the Internet; it will not allow the stream to be saved and played
back later. This can be problematic when one has a slow or intermittent
connection (i.e. most times).
Also, saving it would allow it to be replayed again later, without
having to connect to the net each time. No doubt RealPlayer see it
as a feature of their system that you can't save files; but to users
it is a bug. (One could possibly patch the Linux kernel so it would
intercept the stream of IP packets from the source to the RealPlayer
application to "fool" it into believing it was a real Internet
connection -- or do RealPlayer get round that by having a 2-way
conversation and encrypting it differently each time?)
I suspect also there might be legal issues relating to an open source
version, at least in some jurisdictions; i.e. corporate bullying a la
DVD-CCA.

Hi,
I am almost tearing my hair out of frustration. If anyone can
shed any light on my situation I would be MUCH appreciative.
Machine: Dual PII/400, 512MB ECC, MicroStar MS-6120N
AMI MegaRAID 428, 5 SCSI Wide 4GB HDD on 2 channels
Adaptec AHA3985 3-channel w/ CD-ROM, CD-R, scanner, MO, HDD.
DE-220 (NE2k clone) ISA 10Mb/s NIC, 3C905 PCI 10/100 Mb/s NIC
Matrox Millennium 8MB, Logitech Marble Plus trackball PS/2
Problem:
[1] I was unable to make Linux see more than one Logical Drive. When
booting up, there is a message making it clear that the driver
sees two Logical Drives, but only find one of them as /dev/sda.
[2] I can't install using standard Red Hat 6.1 Graphical Install.
The install process conks out with a Python error. Text-based
install will conclude normally, but when installing will only
see TWO DRIVES.
[3] When installing, the kernel sees megaraid first; when rebooting
after install, the kernel sees aic7xxx first, result is a kernel
panic. This is solvable by disconnecting the aic7xxx first, do
the install from the megaraid (at least disconnect all HDD-like
devices), recompile kernel with megaraid compiled in and aic7xxx
as module, then plugging in the HDD's on the aic7xxx. But there
surely is a better way!
[4] Back to 1; I still need to use the other logical drive.

Hi All,
I'm new to Linux. I have a 3 hard drive system and want to install Red Hat
Linux 6.1 on my 3rd hard drive. I will use the bios to boot to the drive.
Right now the drive is formatted FAT 32. Using the Red hat program I deleted
the partition so I could make it native Linux. Now no matter what I choose
it just gives me errors.
All I want to do is:
Install a 16M boot partition on my 3rd drive
install a 200M swap partition on my 3rd drive
install the rest as a /root partition on my 3rd drive
I will just install Lilo on the 3rd drive also and use the bios to boot to
that drive.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

it is possible that automounter tries more than one entry for a mount
label, e.a.:
zip -fstype=auto,rw,umask=000 :/dev/hdd4
zip -fstype=auto,rw,umask=000 :/dev/hdd1
If the first mounts fails (because zip is partioned to first partition)
it tries the next entry until it reaches the end of file.
Other purpose is NFS; you can have more redundancy if you can try more
then one NFS server ...
So long,

You can't do that, and that's probably why you're having problems
installing anything. The BIOS can only access the first two hard drives
at boot time, because the BIOS is old and semi-stupid. LILO will also not
work unless it's on the first hard disk somewhere. (Taken straight from
the LILO docs, but these are 6 months old; maybe things have changed.)
I'd say your best bet is to move this third HD to the slave position on
the first IDE controller and move whatever was there before somewhere
else. Then you can install LILO on the MBR of the first hard drive, or
use LOADLIN to boot from WinXX if you're scared of doing the MBR thing.

The closest thing I've found to a "quick and easy" backup program
for Linux is taper.
http://www.omen.net.au/~yusuf/
It works through the console, so you get simple graphics without
having to use X-Window. It's easy to setup and use. It bogs down a
bit on large file systems, but it wasn't really designed for that.
A really nice feature of taper is that it supports fast forward: if
your tape drive supports this feature. That way, if you wish to
restore a single file the drive will skip-ahead through the archive
to the file you need, without have to read through the entire
archive like tar does. On slow floppy tape drives like my TR-3
unit, this can literally knock hours off a file restore.

If it *is* a module, then compile the floppy.o piece as a module too.
Then you just insmod and rmmod the appropriate modules. "man
conf.modules" and use the pre-install directive in that file to automate
the process somewhat.
I think the problem may have something to do with the fact that the LS-120
can emulate a standard floppy, but it isn't on the floppy controller.

I don't know what could be causing the "auto:" problem without more info.
Which distro is this? Can you enter "linux S" at the bootprompt and get a
system going? Was it working before, and did you remove or change
anything?
If "linux S" doesn't work, go into your BIOS setup program, and change the
boot order so that "floppy" is before "hard disk". Boot from a rescue
disk. (This is basic knowledge if you've worked with PCs for any length
of time...)
Depending on the distribution you have, a rescue disk may not have been
shipped. http://www.toms.net/rb has a very good rescue disk image, and
you can copy this to a floppy from DOS or Linux, as you desire.

autoexec.bat and a few other things from a different win98 computer and
putting them on a disk. I also did a sys a: from another computer onto

This is what I usually do to make a pdf:
- I print to a PostScript file after setting the page format to A4
- I use ps2pdf to convert the ps-file to pdf
The problem with gv (I don't know if this applies to Acroread) is that
it sets the paper size to Letter no matter what format the pdf-file
actually specifies. If you display the pdf using xpdf instead, then it
should come up as A4 straight away.

Subject: shmem works static-linked, but not dynamic-linked
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 18:35:32 GMT
Shared-memory works on static-linked by not dynamic-linked program:
I wanted to use shared-memory between 2 processes in my application.
I first tried a small test, with one Reader Process that creates and
attaches (shmget, shmat) a shared segment, and one Writer Proces that
attaches afterward. The Writer writes data into the segment, then
sets a ReadDataAvailable flag at a known location in the segment.
The Reader polls that flag, and reads the data when the flag is set.
All this works nicely when the Writer is a static-linked program.
When the Writer is packaged as a ".so" lib, then something breaks.
The Reader can still detect the ReadDataAvailable flag change state,
but when it tries to read the data, all the locations are zeros.
Note that this is EXACTLY the same program code (C) in each case;
I did check with nm and it seems that the shmget/shmat calls are
in each case invoking via GLIBC_2.0.
I suspect this is a glitch in the CPU primary or secondary cache?
The write-through is buggy? Yet it is surprising that the flag
location is written ok, and data that is only a few locations away
is lost... HELP!
I tried 2 different systems, both VALinux:

Take a look at apsfilter. It's supposed to be able to do color.

You've made the .rpm SUID, when you wanted to make the xcdroast
*executable* SUID. Do this:
# chmod +s /usr/X11R6/bin/xcdroast
I think you'll find that works much better... Also note that SuSE has a
"paranoid permissions" setting that checks for non-official SUID programs
and changes their permissions. If you've set the "paranoid" option using
YaST, you may have to fiddle with the /etc/permissions.paranoid file to
prevent the nightly cron job from thwacking your xcdroast binary....

Subject: error making font3d: lg++: No such file... What do I miss?
Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 19:05:58 GMT
I thought i had every library ever written installed by now - i was wrong.
When trying to run a make on xfont3d i get this:
g++ -o font3d build.o font3d.o geometry.o truetype.o -lm -lg++
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open -lg++: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [font3d] Error 1
I need a clue to what i miss or what to use instead. From the Makefile:
# If you use DJGPP to compile for MS-DOS use the following:
#
# CC = gcc
# LIBS = -lm -lgpp
#
# Otherwise, most people will use these:
CC = g++
LIBS = -lm -lg++
(rest cut)
So what do most people use *instead* of -lg++ ? :P
Searched altavista but ++ isn't a valid search-criteria.
font3d and xfont3d found at:
http://cspara.uah.edu/~mallozzir/software/xforms/xfont3d.html
(xforms, xforms-devel and povray already installed)
