Why bother with these types. If they want to play the windows upgrade
game, too bad for them. They pay $$ for something they will just
complain about, while linux buffs pay nothing and learn something about
the workings of a computer operating system. You won't convince the
gamers anyway. Talking to them just encourages em.

I've just installed RedHat linux 6.1 on my system, and I have a problem with
my TNT2 drivers (I think!). When I try to start X, my screen goes black and
turns it self on and off! I have 32 MB of memory on the card, and when I

There is a nice C/C++ function
library for vector graphics libplot:
http://www.gnu.org/software/plotutils/plotutils.html

Is there a version of it (or something other but
similar) working with fortran 77 (g77) ?

I have found DISLIN http://www.linmpi.mpg.de/dislin/
but it would be nice to have libplot working for C/C++

Subject: Cosing, minimizing buttons stop working

After starting an x-windows session, the minimize, maximize, and close
buttons on the various windows work fine; but after a while, they don't
respond.
Also, clicking on the title bars transfers me from one window to
another; but after a while that too ceases to respond.
Reminds me of windows and having to restart to get things going again.
Why? Why? Why?
Gee sus!! I'm going to be an old man by the time I figure this
*!@#$%^^%#@ OS out! (and I'm halfway there already-maybe that's the
problem)

I could have started a business and run it, made a fortune, and sold the
business at a profit with MS Windows by now. What's the gig with
Leenux?

It's suppose to be more stable, yet I have to restart just like windows
to keep things going.

Ya, it's faster if you don't count the time mounting and umounting every
time you want to look at a freaking drive.

More stable? How? On huge international businesses? I only have one
computer.

Good for networking? I'm not setting up a network.
Good for security? What's wrong with Conseal PC Firewall for windows?
Good for tracking where the hack is coming from? Can this be done
successfully all the time?

Maybe Linux is good for NASA, but how long did those guys maintaining
over there study computers before they got things going? Did their
families raise them in a computer programming based enviornment?

Maybe if I had taken a class at college in Unix or something first, it
might have been a good idea
Then I hear about grade and high school kids hacking like old pros. Do
they figure all this out on their own? Maybe I'm just too dumb for this
OS.

I really can't see the advantage of spending so much time on learning an
OS. What's the point?
What's the advantage; the gain? Free software? Shoot, if I counted the
hours I spend learning it, the whole show is costing twenty times as
much.
What's wrong with OS2, MacOS, BeOS?

Thanx for the help. That led me to this link, which really made it
pretty painless, especially since I don't need to boot from the raid.
The only thing that was different than what it said, presumably since
I'm not booting from the raid, was that I set my persistent-superblock

Print it to a file in postscript format. Then use Ghostscript to convert it

The file you want to edit is /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt . This file is
executed when the system shuts down or reboots... and it uses bash, so
forget that tcsh-specific stuff. Login and logout are controlled by
several files in ~, or if the files in ~ don't exist, by the
files in /etc/skel . The files are .bash_logout and .logout (for tcsh).
/etc/profile and /etc/bashrc are read for all users at login time.

>And also how can I add a directory to a the path of all users?

Why? Programs that everyone should be able to execute go in
/usr/local/bin ; this makes many things easier, including backups. If you
must edit everyone's $PATH, try the files in /etc I mentioned above.

Time to start learning text-mode Linux, then, eh? (If your system ever
goes seriously arse-up, you certainly won't have X...)

6.1 shipped with Xfree86 3.3.5 IIRC, which supports the TNT2 right out of
the box. First thing to try is boot into runlevel 3, log in as root, and
enter "Xconfigurator". That might help; for whatever reason, the
installer might not have written a sane /etc/X11/XF86Config and
Xconfigurator can fix that.

If that doesn't help, you may need to upgrade your X. I put together a
guide at the URL below, and the official notes are below that.

Hi,

GetConfig: DColorSync=Y
GetConfig: DebugX11=""

So it's waiting at ' GetConfig: DebugX11="" . Why ?

Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 00:30:28 GMT

Chien,

I probably doesn't have to do with Windows or your partitions at all.

It has to do with Gnome. I recently starting getting these problems after
I upgraded my glib and gtk libraries. If you have recently installed
anything that may affect any of your libraries, you may need to reset your
Gnome settings for your user account by removing the .gnome directory in
your home directory. It will be rebuilt next time you log in and you will
have to re-configure your desktop settings. Go to www.gnome.org if you want
to know more about Gnome or try to update it.

Just an FYI, I tried that dual boot a single HD and had about a week's
worth of nightmares. I broke down and bought another hard drive (go to
www.pricewatch.com if you want a good deal on hardware) and now windows is
amply segregated from my Linux setup, but I can mount my Win drive from
Linux as long as the file that I am looking for is not in a directory that
has a space in the name (ie. Program Files). I haven't seen the latest
version of Partition Magic, but I had lots of problems with my MBR and my
partition tables when they were on the same disk. If you have little
experience, with either OS, I would recommend that you read up on which one
suites your needs and pick one, instead of trying to learn both on top of
fooling around with the dual boot stuff.

Sounds like you've used Novell (vol1, vol2).

Just set the jumpers on your new HD, boot the machine, then
with fdisk create the partitions etc. You'll need to put
the appropriate lines in your /etc/fstab file to ensure
that these partitions are mounted at boot time.

If your new disk is the second HD, it'll probably be
called hdb and the partitions will go hdb0, hdb1, hdb2
etc. Your existing (or first) HD will be hda and partitions
will be hda0, hda1, hda2 etc.

Have a look around in the HOWTOs they give lots of good
information on this type of thing, complete with the comands
you'll need to use and instructions on the changes that you
need to make to system files such as /etc/fstab.

Gool luck.

Should have read the book before you decided to star in the movie.

All the questions that you ask are answered in the HOWTOs, these are in
a few different formats on my distribution of RH6.0, and are located
in the directory /usr/doc/HOWTO. They are also stored in an uncompressed
format on the instalation CD so that you can read them before you
install linux. They cover almost everything.

I had quite a time of it myself when installing and getting everything
up and running, it's a very steep learning curve but you'll get there.
