There are one or two commercial packages that run in console mode;
look for <http://www.xwind.com/news.htm> for "Synchronize."

There are also several STDIN/STDOUT-based calendar packages, notably:
- David Skoll's REMIND
  <http://www.roaringpenguin.com/remind.html>
- The TCL (no Tk) portion of iCal
  <http://www.desy.de/products/ical/ical-2.2/doc/interface.html>

- pcal
  <http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palms/5555/PS/index.html>

There are also some "Web Calendar" packages that you could connect to
using Lynx or w3m.

I just recently installed Mandrake 7.0 also, and before I could compile
anything, I had to install a bunch of things including development files
needed for header files. I just used the Kpackage tool and installed
whatever the program I was compiling needed and packages required by
those. It sounds like you might be missing make and are definitely
missing automake.

Anybody having an accout with this ISP get the NEWS service to work?
I'm using the news reader tin with the following file:
.newsauth
news.smartworld.net username password

where username/pasword are those used for this ISP you mention below.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been able to get to the News server
at all. I get connection timed out even though the environment variable
NNTPSERVER is also set to "news.smartworld.net".

I've even tried "lynx news://news.smartworld.net" and login with
my username/password and all this does is hang forever.

Looks like your terminal emulator is ignoring carriage returns for some
reason, but is doing linefeeds. If you disabled carriage returns in your
terminal emulator you have to fix that. If it can enulate a 'vt100'
(lower case) that should certainly work, although, 'VT100' in caps will
not.

The error you report just means that you couldn't reload DOS,
so fips may have completed okay.

fips makes turns the freed up space into a primary DOS partition.
This will certainly confuse Windows. But if you change this to
a Linux partition, Windows should ignore it. In fact, during the
installation of Linux, you should delete this partition and
create create whatever Linux partitions are needed to install
Linux.

After upgrading to RH6.2, sgmltools are broken. I've installed the sgml and

Here is the standard Debian poff script. Hack it up to suit your needs.

Subject: Alcatel Speed Touch Home ADSL modem
Date: Fri, 02 Jun 2000 21:03:05 -0700

Hello,

I have a desktop 300 mhz AMD processor with 256 mb ram 8 gigs hard drive
computer which I nicknamed balay (means home in Bisaya); and I also have
an IBM Thinkpad L760D in a Dock2 docking station 90 mhz Intel Pentium
64 mb ram 3 gigs hard drive which I nicknamed balut (means fertilized
chicken or duck egg popular in the Philippines). I have one Kingston
10/100 PCI Ethernet Card and one SMC 10/100 PCI Ethernet Card which I
named eth0 and eth1 in balay. I have an Ambion 10/100 16-bit Ethernet
PC Card named eth0 in balut. I have an auto-switching auto-sensing
4-port 10/00 Ethernet hub which I wire two straight-through Cat 5  RJ45
cables - one from balut and and one from balay both to the Ethernet
hub. I have Mandrake 7.0 in both balay and balut. After loading the
network on both balay and balut (about 6 linux network commands on the
Unix Shell Prompt), I can ping from balay to balut and ping from balut
to balay both averaging .7 .8 ms return - simultaneously (and of course
press ctrl-C to end the pings). I can telnet from balay to balut (a
remote system terminal program) and from balut to balay -
simultaneously. I have export file systems on both balay and balut as
well as nfs file mounting all taking place on /mnt/balut and /mnt/balay
on balut and /mnt/balay and /mnt/balut on balay where I can play MP3
resident on balay remotely on balut sounding very nice on the IBM
Thinkpad Dock2 speakers. I can transfer files between balut and balay
as well as between balay and balut. I use the Kingston for eth0 to
connect to the static home network which connects to the Ambion PC Card
for eth0 on the Thinkpad. I use the SMC for eth1 to connect to the
Alcatel Speed Touch Home ASDL modem.

Does anyone have experience with the PPP Over Ethernet software that
would work for dynamic IP addresses assigned to the Alcatel Speed Touch
Home ADSL modem by the ISP Pacific Bell?

Any advice will me much appreciated.

Thanks,

Terrio Echavez

I have an Alcatel 1000 (predecessor of the SpeedTouch), but not using
PPPoE, thankfully. Actually, the modem does not get an IP assigned to
it. It is just a dumb bridge. The IP will be assigned to the interface.
Or is that really what you are meaning? I hear good things about
roaring penguin PPPoE client: www.roaringpenguin.com. If they gave you
the NTS client, I hear that is buggy.

> HI Jackie:

Yes you can safely get rid of core. There only useful for programmers who need
to know exactly why a program crashed. To do a system-wide cleanup of core
files, run the following command:

find / name core -atime +1 -rm{}\;

This command will delete any core files on your system that are more than one
day old. Then run the command:

cat /etc/profile | grep ulimit

 You should see something like ulimit 10000. This set a 10 MB limit on core
files. To prevent core files from being created, just set ulimit to 0000. No
more core files.

I hope this helps
